This one was a real heart wrencher. So poignant - lump in my throat the entire time.
Definitely worth a read.
For me, A Bucket List To Die For was an unexpected delight. I should know better than to judge a book by its cover but in the case of this book I almost did. It just felt a little busy for my personal taste. However the contents of the book definitely surpassed by expectations.
A Bucket List To Die For had me hooked from the prologue. I love storylines that involve the complexity of family and the varying dynamics that can be present. When executed right, the emotions of the characters can be felt off the page and I felt this was definitely the authors talent.
Using multiple POV really worked to build character development and towards the end of the book I would have been able to identify who was narrating without the prompt. This again was a talent of the author.
I particularly enjoyed Apple’s chapters and hoped for her wishes of a present family to come true. I also enjoyed the setting of France, it helped me to learn about a different culture.
This is a book I would recommend and am so glad I didn’t overlook.
I must firstly apologise for the amount of time it has taken me to provide a review of this book, my health was rather bad for quite some time, something that had me in hospital on numerous occasions and simply didnt leave me with the time I once had to do what I love most.
Unfortunately that does mean I have missed the archive date for many of these books, so It would feel unjust throwing any review together without being able to pay attention to each novel properly.
However, I am now back to reading as before and look forward to sharing my honest reviews as always going forward. I thank you f0r the patience and understanding throughout x
This was an enjoyable story with an important message. I liked the different challenges that Joe faced and how he overcame them and tried to being his family together. An emotional story, filled with drama and heart break but surprisingly hopeful at the same time.
I want to thank Netgalley and the author for gifting me the ebook. A heart warming women's fiction novel. Highly recommend.
Lovely feel good book to read. It was a joy to read. Lovely characters. Great plot. The book was charming. Very well written. I’d definitely recommend this book
Joe has been given a challenge by his late wife, with the assistance of his family he sets about achieving this.
This was a decent read but maybe not the right one for me. Thank you to netgalley for this arc in exchange for my honest review.
A very depressing and overly complicated book that for me has tried too hard to put so may pov in. I gave up around 20%
Some multi POV books are clunky and hard to follow. Sadly, this is one of them. It's well written but due to the rather stilted style it can be hard to read. Also, with so many characters it's often hard to keep up with who's speaking.
Sadly this just wasn't for me
I do enjoy a good multi POV story. Also stories that involve bucket lists - as the title suggests! Lou suffers from dementia and passes away in her early fifties. As her dying wish, she leaves instructions behind for her husband to reunite their broken up family after she's gone. This is a poignant tale of familiar emotions. It explores all the different relationships we encounter everyday and all the challenges they bring with them. A lot of it was relatable to me. The plot moves along well and the characters seemed well-drawn out to me.
The only reason I would hold back some stars is that the story while told well, has been told several times in movies or novels. It remains a heartwarming tale but not a 5 star for me.
This was a very emotional book and all the feels for me. Its a book filled with drama and love. It gives you that warm fuzzy feeling as well as making you cry.
Lou's adult children are unhappy and as a family, they've drifted apart. After a rare memory disease cuts her life short she tasks her husband, Joe, to bring their family back together and infuse their children's lives with happiness.
It's an interesting premise and it is a touching story. The most unique aspect of this book is that most (if not all) of the characters narrate at least one part of the book (Even Lou chimes in from the 'Good Place'😉). One would think that so many perspectives would cause it to be confusing or overwhelming. But it never is. In fact, the reader feels more involved with this motley crew instead of an outsider watching from the sidelines as it all unfolds.
For a novel that's filled with so much emotion, it's rather quirky and I think it's because something is lost in translation. It's not that I think the translation was done poorly, not at all. But as you read it you can feel that something is missing.
This book was originally published in French under the name "Entre ciel et Lou" which translates directly to "Between Sky and Lou" which gives a very different feeling to "A Bucket List To Die For". Upon reading the title, I went in thinking this would be something like that movie with Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman and it's certainly not that.
A beautiful tear jerking multiple pint of view story centering around Joseph, a retired cardiologist, who recently lost his wife to dementia. The death was unexpected and Joe is struggling to come to terms with life without her and so begins his journey to fufil his wifes last wish - spend the next two months reuniting his estranged family and ensuring their happiness. not an easy task for Joseph, who hasn’t been a hands-on father any time before, The characters are fantasitc and are all given a voice throughout the story. which really brings them alive and I feelt invested in each and everyone of htem. A truly heartwarming and enjoyable read.
Such a precious book!!! I struggled at the beginning - but thats on me, I always struggle when I try to read a book that I'm unfamiliar with the location and vernacular - it didn't last long!! My heart ached so greatly for this entire family over their loss of Lou!! Apple was my very favorite character - and I even loved those that were my "least favorites" by the end. I truly appreciated the love and redemption told of and will forever call my "old man sweaters" - Josephs <3 I was gifted this book by Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. I'm so grateful to have the opportunity to dive into a story that isn't one of my "usuals".
Heartbreaking but uplifting book about the efffects of early onset dementia and trying to heal family relationships beyond the grave. You get the storyline from all perspectives including Lou from Heaven. Thought provoking
The star of this book is definitely the island of Groix, a small rock off the french coast. The story revolves around three generations of one family. Joe and his wife Lou, their children Cyrian , a bit of a player and his wife Albans. They have a daughter Charlotte and he has a daughter Apple with an Islander. Their daughter Sarah lives in Paris and has a very full life, although disabled nothing stops her doing what she wants to do. Joe has a difficult relationship with his son and daughter in law. Then things change, an interesting and entertaining story.
An interesting read, I enjoyed learning about the island and the area. The book was well translated, and the story was okay.
The plot lacked a little in excitement, as it was obviously going to all work out okay in the end. I did think the author portrayed disability well, as well as dementia.
This book was not at all what I expected. The title suggests a cozy mystery and this was far from it. This was an excellent view on grief from several points of view and while it was beautifully written, it was also difficult to read because of the writing style and the many points of view. There was a lot going on and it was filled with drama but not too hard to follow.
Did not finish.
Apologies for not completing a review but the writing was stilted and the tone was too dark for me right now.
A beautiful and heartwarming story. It was an interesting read with takes you on a journey involving lots of family drama, issues and how often death of a loved one changes the dynamics of relationships.
The only thing I couldn't figure out was the choice of the title for the book.
Thank You NetGalley and Hodder & Stoughton for this ARC!
