Cute and sweet children's book. My kid was a bit old for it but would have loved it when she was a few years younger.
Embark on an adorable journey into the heart of family with "Dog's First Baby," a delightful board book by Natalie Nelson. As a dog enthusiast, I couldn't help but be charmed by the canine perspective on welcoming a new family member.
Natalie Nelson captures the curiosity and humor of a furry friend encountering a tiny, loud newcomer. Through Dog's eyes, we explore the mystery of the new arrival—is it another dog or something else entirely? The whimsical illustrations add a playful touch to the tale, making it a joy for both kids and dog parents alike.
The story unfolds with Dog's determination to uncover the truth, leading to a heartwarming discovery that goes beyond species. The loud, silly creature turns out to be more than just a sibling; it's a new friend for Dog, creating a bond that promises endless adventures.
This playful board book is not only a delightful read-aloud but also a testament to the charm and humor that dogs bring to our lives. With each turn of the page, the story resonates with warmth and a sense of wonder, making it an instant favorite for little ones and dog lovers.
What a playful and heart-tugging book. Seeing a new baby through the dog's point of view is a fun way to introduce a new baby to the family. Fun and just begging to be read over and over.
The first thing.I noticed about this book was that its not just a copy of cats first baby. It is it’s own story. Unlike the cat the dog has a close bond with its baby. True to the nature of real dogs with infants.
That was super cute. I love how it is written, I do feel like a dog is speaking throughout it, and I love the similarities and differences the dog observes. The art is lovely and very expressive! I can't wait to read the cat version of this!
I LOVED THIS!! I will definitely be buying this book. This is such a sweet story that made me smile while reading it.
This delightful picture book is full of playful, colourful illustrations sure to please the minds of the little people who set their eyes on it.
It is a funny tale about a dog who gets his first baby, and the confusion this change can surely bring. Children will enjoy this and possibly find it relatable, especially children who have recently had a new sibling come into their household.
I think children will enjoy this book and more than likely return to it to glance through independently, recite the story through the picture prompts on each page.
A cute story which I loved reading to my little boy - very lovely play on words too! Fun illustrations.
This is a very quick but sweet book regarding the bond that can soon happen between baby and dog. The illustrations throughout the book are beautiful, with colours that catch your eye and draw you too them. I love how you can see the confusion of the dog at first and then see the bond grow between them. Such a lovely book for children
Dog's First Baby is a delightful read-aloud book for children...and babies. The premise is simple, and the illustrations are interesting. I like how the relationship between the dog and the baby is not depicted as cloyingly sweet. I would warn parents - your child WILL want a dog after reading this. So have that conversation BEFORE getting this book. If you already have a dog, your baby/child may develop newer respect for your dog.

A Board Book

I received an arc of this book from NetGalley and Quirk Books in exchange for an honest review.
I read this book with my 4 year old who especially enjoyed it because he has a baby cousin who crawls around much like the baby in the book. The book is read from the dogs point of view as he tries to figure out what this baby is after some comparisons between himself and the baby which my son found giggle worthy the dog determined that whatever the baby was he liked it. We enjoyed the engaging colors and illustrations. Board books that can pull a laugh are the ones that get read over and over as I’m sure this one will. This will be a great book for libraries as well. 5/5
Review to come September 27th on blog/goodreads.

I just saw this very adorable looking book over at Netgalley and how could I resist? And also I so need the other book: Cat's First Baby!
In this adorable and fun book we meet Dog. Dog is going to meet a new family member, namely the baby! But what is a baby? What does a baby do? We see dog try to figure out what the baby is. It has no tail, it doesn't smell like a dog, the front paws (aka the cute little chubby arms and hands) are not the same. It was all very adorable to see dog make sense of the new situation and then also finding that while the new creature is not a dog... it can be a friend! A friend to howl with, a friend to admire given how much they eat (which had me laughing, such a dog thing to admire that), a friend to play with (all sorts of fun games), a friend to walk with. It was just the cutest to see these two bond and I think that there is a lifelong bond in store for them. With plenty of fun and happy times. I loved how sweet the dog was and also loved that the mom was there to keep an eye out on these two, to make sure that they are both not doing something not so good (like when the baby tried to climb the dog to play horsey).
The art was really fun and made the book even more adorable! Though, sorry, I had a bit of a laugh at the very round head of the baby which looked like someone just plopped a ball on a body and added some facial features.
All in all, I would recommend this book to all. Be warned, lots of cuteness!
The illustrations and the colour palette in this adorable book are excellent. Any home with a baby and a dog would devour this is no time to be reread a hundred times.
This sweet board book will certainly be relatable to kids who meet their brand new sibling for the very first time. Sometimes that joyous occasion isn't so joyous especially if you are the family pet. Dog has to check things out for himself to find out if this strange wiggly bundle is another dog or just what it is.
Written from the dog's perspective kids will be giggling when Dog sniffs out the baby, discovers the babies front paws aren't like his back paws, and has no tail! They do have some things in common like getting sleepy now and then, enjoying a walk, a stroll, and my favourite... both can howl, just to name a few. As they hang out together and enjoy many adventures a bond forms between the two and dog and baby become fast friends.
The illustrations are bold, colourful, full of humour and greatly enrich the text. Little ones will love to have the story read to them again and again, guaranteed! I highly recommend this book. I can't wait for "Cat's First Baby" coming in 2022.
This precious book is perfect for dog-loving parents! With a unique, bright art style and an adorable little storyline, children are sure to love this. It reads very easily and I could see a lot of places where a parent could put on funny voices or act out to get a laugh from their child, and overall it was a delight to read. If I had a baby myself I would definitely get this to read to them.
A very sweet board book about a dog getting used to a new baby and the ways they are alike and different.
This is a really adorable book that is perfect for babies, toddlers, and early preschoolers. It has lots of sweet and funny moments with bold illustrations, while encouraging children to think about similarities and differences. My personal favorite is when the dog says "You think I am a horse. I am not." :) It could also be a great jumping off point to talk about being gentle and how we engage with our pets when children are ready.
What a fantastic little book! I love books told from a different perspective, in this case it’s the dog! The art work is charming and the story is simple and fun!
Bright illustrations and a simple story-line about the friendship between a dog and the new baby. Would make a very cute gift for newborns to toddlers.
