Tallulah is a teenage mum and is living with her mum Kim, and her boyfriend Zach and her younger brother Ryan. Their baby, Noah, is now 12 months old and Tallulah and Zach have not been out together in a long time, so make plans for dinner at their local pub one Friday night. Kim has encouraged this night out and has even said to have a lie-in and she will look after Noah.

Later that night, Kim receives a text from Tallulah asking if it is OK for them to stay out for a bit as they have bumped into some college friends of hers and are going back to one of their houses. With Noah asleep, Kim heads off to bed only to wake up at 4:30 am and discover that Tallulah is not home and she still isn’t home later, that day, in fact, she never comes home.

A year later, Peter who is the new headteacher of the private school across the common and his girlfriend Sophie take residence at the school. Sophie is out walking in the woods whilst Peter is working and she comes across a sign nailed to a fence saying ‘Dig Here’...

This is definitely, hands down Lisa Jewells best novel to date! Starting with the preface about arachnophobia, that instantly got my pulse racing. I am petrified of spiders! I was hooked from the start right the way through to the end and I was constantly changing my mind on what the outcome will be. I had so many theories running through my head throughout the book. It is just one seriously twisty chilling story that makes for extreme compulsive reading. It was very difficult to put down. Just phenomenal!

I love Lisa Jewell's books so was delighted to receive a copy of this one. It certainly didn't disappoint. An engrossing, and very clever story which left me frantically reading to find out what happened. I will definitely be recommending this book, and I am already looking forward to Lisa Jewell's next one.

Another great Lisa Jewell novel that is sure to grip the reader from start to finish. I was instantly pulled in by this novel and completed it the same day such was the hold it had on me. Excellent characters, great suspense and well paced plot. The story is told over two timelines.

In 2017, nineteen year old Tallulah is leaving her child with her mother Kim to go out on a date. Her mother is completely unaware what is in store for her daughter and that Tallulah will not be home to see her child in the morning.

Kim wakes up the following day to find no trace of her daughter and frantically tries to find out where Tallulah is and why she did not return home. Tallulah’s friends tell Kim that she was last seen heading to a party with her boyfriend Zach at a house in the nearby woods called Dark Place.

In 2019, Sophie is walking in the woods near the boarding school where her boyfriend has just started work as a head-teacher when she sees a note fixed to a tree instructing ‘Dig here’

There are some excellent characters in this book and the two timelines work well to keep the suspense mounting. Very addictive, well crafted story.

I would like to thank both Netgalley and Random House for supplying a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.

Wow. Just wow. I love Lisa Jewell's books and this is right up there in my top 5 of hers. Outstanding storytelling, brilliantly real and relatable characters, more twists than a sack full of Slinkys, intrigue and deceit that would challenge even the savviest of readers and a deliciously satisfying ending. THIS is the pandemic reading I want - escapism, excitement, suspense and a world where going to the pub with a group of friends wasn't a danger mission. I will not write about the plot as I fear anything could serve as a spoiler, I will simply say that I think it is brilliant and I loved it.

Mind blowing and compelling - a book I rushed through in a day and a night (so much for sleeping!) and then wished I hadn’t because it gave me such a book hangover. Brilliantly written, fantastic characters who feel so ‘real’ - everything you need is within these pages.

Cannot recommend more highly.

Lisa Jewell at her brilliant best. Moving to new town, an crime writing author comes across a simple note stuck to a post saying 'dig here'. She does, and is drawn into the mystery disappearance of a young mother and her boyfriend who everyone believes were in love and devoted to their one year old son. Only the girl's mother seems to believe something had just have happened to them; until that note is found, and what the author digs up.

Thank you for my copy of this book to review.

I have read all of Lisa Jewell’s books so far and have loved them all...this latest one is no exception.

I especially liked the different timelines, the private school & village setting & how the story is told from different characters perspectives.

To be honest, I did guess what had happened but it hasn’t changed my opinion on how good the book was.

I finished this book in days and have already recommended it to friends. I can’t wait for the next one!

I’ve enjoyed previous books by this author and am a big fan of her style, so I was confident I’d like this but actually I didn’t just like it, I was totally blown away. The narrative is absolutely compelling and I needed to race to the end to entangle the tale and find out exactly what had happened.
The building of the atmosphere and mystery surrounding the disappearance of two teenagers is expertly done. There is an eclectic mixture of youth, money, and the feelings of uncertainty and discovery of teenage years along with the bittersweet contradictions of the responsibilities of being a teenage parent.
Lisa has a unique way of digging deep into human nature, which we all recognise aspects of and presenting it as an all engaging story which you feel almost a part of, so engaging it is.
An absolutely well deserved 5 stars from me and a story that will stay with me for a long time. Thank you.

This would make a very good television series. As it is, it is an impressive and gripping read. Tallulah and boyfriend Zack have a baby son and a difficult relationship as he becomes increasingly controlling. Nearby is a family of entitled people with a daughter Scarlett. They live in a mansion appropriately called the Dark Place. Scarlett is a mixed up young woman too. The centrepiece of the story is a boarding school, Manton College where a new headmaster comes with his partner Sophie. It just so happens that Sophie writes detective novels so is an ideal helpmate of .Tallulah’s mother Kim when her daughter and her partner Zack disappear. Kim and Sophie discover clues that restart the police investigation. The story is well told with gripping twists and unexpected outcomes. The characters are well drawn and credible. This is a book not to be put down as it grabs the reader from the first page. I strongly recommend it.

Tallulah and Zach are teenage parents to a baby they adore. Lula's mum is babysitting for them while they have a night out and the pair never return. The book skips in time to events of the night they disappeared and what Lula's mum is going through now with raising the baby. The story is told from a few perspectives so it can be a little confusing alongside the time jumps but overall its a really gripping read. I really enjoy Lisa Jewell thrillers and this is another excellent and inventive novel from her.

I am a fan of Lisa Jewell books so was really excited to receive this ARC. I could not put this book down as I was so gripped by the story.
Kim is babysitting for her 19 year old daughter, Tallulah, and live in boyfriend, Zach, when they fail to come home. So begins the story, which moves through time so we learn about Tallulah before her disappearance and introduced to an array of characters.
I liked the character of Sophie, girlfriend to the new head teacher of the school which has links to the event. Sophie is a writer of detective novels and can't help getting swept up by events when she finds a sign by the back gate saying 'dig here'
Another brilliant book by Lisa Jewell, and one of my favourites! Highly recommend!

I started this book mid morning and literally couldn't put it down until completing it a few hours later. Full of twists and turns; full of drama and suspense. It is the best book I've read in a while. Lisa Jewell at her finest. Covid lockdown obviously unleashed a beast. BRILLIANT book. I just wish I'd been able to make it last longer.

No one can write like Lisa Jewell. A must read novel.
teenage mum Tallulah heads out on a date, leaving her baby son at home with her mother, Kim.
At 11pm she sends her mum a text message. At 4.30am Kim awakens to discover that Tallulah has not come home
Friends tell her that Tallulah was last seen heading to a pool party at a house in the woods nearby called Dark Place
Tallulah never returns.
2018: walking in the woods behind the boarding school where her boyfriend has just started as a head-teacher, Sophie sees a sign nailed to a fence.
And then a threating note is found.
Who are they? And what they want?
Read this to know.
Thanks to NetGalley and Cornerstone for giving me an advance copy.

I actually screamed when I saw the email from NetGalley offering me the chance to read and review this book. As a long time fan of Lisa’s, right from buying Ralph’s Party on publication, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on her latest.

In 2017, teenage mother Tallulah goes out to the pub one Friday night, leaving her baby son at home with her mum. She later gets in touch h with her mum to say that she is going back to a house with some friends. That house is called Dark Place and Tallulah is not seen or heard from again.....her boyfriend and father of her son also vanished that night and shortly after, the Jacques family who own Dark Place also leave town.
What happened that night, the night she disappeared? Her mum Kim is determined to find out.

In 2018, Sophie has just moved to the village when she enters her garden and sees a handwritten notice saying “Dig Here”, with an arrow pointing downwards. When she does, Sophie finds an engagement ring in a box. Why is it there, who does it belong to and why has it been buried?

Lisa masterfully builds up the story with suspense as the story moves between the timelines, allowing the reader to piece together the clues with Kim and Sophie.

I literally could not put this book down. Honestly, I think this is Lisa’s best book yet and my only regret is I now have longer to wait for her next one!

It starts as a casual night in for Kim, babysitting her 1 year old grandson while her daughter, Tallulah, and her boyfriend enjoy a night on the town. Things take a dark turn however, when the young couple fail to return, leaving not a single trace behind.

I loved the concept of this one and the storyline was so gripping that I could not put it down! I did find the various different timelines a little bit confusing and the ending didn’t blow my mind, but it was a really enjoyable thriller.

This is a gripping novel about the harrowing disappearance of a young mother and her boyfriend the night of a party at her college friend's house.

The story is told in alternate flashback-present day and from the perspective of a novelist who comes to live in the village.

I hesitate to say more as the plot develops and each new event builds both the tension and the story. However the book is an excellent read and the reader is kept guessing until the very end.

Recommended for anyone interested in tense thrillers.
