I enjoyed this book. I play board games with my children and we're fascinated with how they're made and set up. This is a good book and I recommend it!
This is a great book for people who are interested in creating their own games, particularly for teachers who want to introduce some fun and creative ways to incorporate alternative methods of assessment. Although this is really focused on table-top games, I also have used some of these ideas to think about video game design. Very enjoyable and creative!
This feeds your creative bug. It was not what I expected at all. I got it on a whim but will definitely go back to it over and over for inspiration in the future.

Thank you, Netgalley and the author/publisher, for the opportunity to read and review an advanced reader's copy of this book. This in no way affects my review, all opinions are my own.
This book was surprisingly fantastic! The author wrote the book with those in mind who don't have a clue about the mechanics of board games and the terminology related to them. The book starts with the basics and then builds on that. The layout, color scheme, and structure are great. It was easy to find info when you wanted to go back and forth to read up on related sections. I wish there were a few more examples of more complex games to see how they work.
Brilliant advice and ideas in this book.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for letting me access this book in exchange for my feedback.

As a homeschool mom who believes that games play a crucial role in learning, this book is a must. I thought I knew how to make a game. I've done very simple ones before now. This book stepped up my game making skills. It is a wonderful reference and has a ton of information to make games whether you need to make a simple game or a more complex game. This book covers every aspect of what makes up a game.
My husband and I are avid board gamers. Okay, that’s a bit of an understatement. We’ve networked with indie board game companies, test-played prototype versions, hosted 3-4 game nights a week (pre-Covid) and have one of the largest collections in our community… so we might know a thing or two!
This guide is a great introduction to everything board game related, from components, mechanics, turn order, and end game conditions. It’s a very well thought-out approach to designing your own game - even with some examples of different types of games that can be sampled and played.
One thing that I feel the digital ARC caused me to miss out on was the formatting. Artwork was interspersed throughout, which will translate well into a dynamic physical copy. Understanding that ARCs still need some finally touches, I am hopeful that there will be easy reference materials for readers, such as a glossary and index. Even moreso, imbedded links for a PDF version would work well for this newer digital age!
When I first read the book, Make Your Own Board Game, I was a little overwhelmed. This is not just for kiddos; this is for adults and YA alike. It helps to bring out your creativity and find ways to put it in a game. This lays out how to make the board, the ways to set the rules, and the games themselves. This is going to be a must have for the Christmas holidays!
Thank you to the author, publisher, and Negalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Make Your Own Board Game references how to construct, proof, and play your own tabletop game. This book is a great in-depth book that allows you to flex your creative muscles. Although intended for younger readers, this book is an excellent reference for anyone considering creating a board game.
The sections and chapters are well thought out to cover different aspects of games and the different mechanics you can encounter. There are many examples to show how these come into play in classic board games, as well as a few fully designed games at the end of the book for you to discover.
