This story made me cry because my Nana is going through the exact same thing right now. It is so sad to see when your once vibrant grandmother start to lose their memory. The way the author describes the conversation and day to day events of an Alzheimer's patient is very similar to what I've been experiencing with Nana! I do love the relationship between Clemence and her grandma and her determination to fulfill her grandmother's last wish. This book has a very special place in my heart. Thank you to NetGalley for allowing me to read this.
Forget Me Not is told in a unique style. I loved how this author/artist team used visuals to convey narrative. Most enjoyable.
Well thanks to the creators of this I feel like I'm losing the plot. In these pages, a young adult smuggles their grandmother out the nursing home she's already tried to flee multiple times, in order to take her on a road trip to her childhood home. But I took until about a sixth of the way in – over 50pp – before realising that it was a granddaughter. The artwork often switches between artfully directed location shots and very fast-and-loose character studies, and I also thought on first reading an early scene was our hero(ine) talking to itself. Would that the art had a greater grasp on what was important. But what of the written storytelling on offer?
Well, it is, as you'd expect, quite an emotional piece. Any chance of it being quiet and maudlin are kiboshed by the old biddy's kleptomania and the fact the whole thing is framed by a police interview, but even when it does things we've seen before it handles them superlatively well, pacing what becomes a slow, dark descent into happiness quite finely. Its very subject matter won't mean it's for everyone – far from it – but it does have heart aplenty, along with a kicking-against-the-pricks mentality I enjoyed. Oh, and two pages of abstracted sex really show the artist knows more than me about how to convey what is and is not important. Not quite four stars, but enough to call it that amongst friends.
Let me start by saying, I normally don't cry when I read books or comics... I've only cried with two books during my 25 years on this earth. That changes now. Now I've cried with 3 books. This one got me good. It made me feel happy, scared and sad at the same time.
Seeing your loved ones grow old, seeing them forget things. It's almost like we still go the shell, but inside it is getting emptier and emptier. Sorry for my cru way of saying it, but I don't know how else to explain it.
Clémence's granny is in a caring home. She keeps talking about her family home, about how her mom and dad are waiting for her. So Clémence "kidnaps' her, and take her granny on a trip, to go back home. And back home granny goes...
Events like death, are always horrible. Just plain horrible, it is as simple as that. But knowing that that person is going home, and meeting with their loved ones again, is a comfort.
A beautiful story, with beautiful illustrations. I definitely recommend this to you.
Thank you to Netgalley for sending me a copy of Forget Me Not.
This was such an intense read for me and I was able to quite connect with the characters on a deeper level.
I do keep wondering about what would happen to my parents getting older after I leave home to set up my own home.
I can feel the dilemma of the characters when they don't have the best choices even when they want to have the best of their ageing parents or grandparents.
This graphic novel has set a level regarding the artstyle, the art sequence, the storytelling, character portrayal and it's deep meaningful illustrations.
The message is loud and clear. The little suspense that played a part made the story more perfect.
For some readers, some parts of nudity may be uncomfortable.
Overall, this is the best graphic novel I have read so far this year.
I am excited for its release!
Thank you author and the publisher for the advance reading copy.
