Super technical!
This book is a wealth of knowledge. If crafting is your thing definitely give it a look. While I found it a bit intimidating as a beginner there is great breakdown of Technique.
I got a free copy of the ebook from NetGalley for preview...
I love to craft and create in various mediums, and over the past several years have delved into paper with enthusiasm. But sadly, I think my biggest hobby may be collecting crafting books. I am always looking to be inspired, and perusing crafting books and magazines are a huge source of that for me.
On saying that, many don't live up to their potential or promises. Either they give up all their best goods in the promos, or the instructions are lacking, or the projects too simplistic and not very inspiring or challenging, or they are gorgeous pictorial works, but lacking in actual practical information.
I was not expecting much from this one, thinking it would be a simplistic book on how to make some simple projects like pinwheels, top and side fold cards, and that what is described as unique is not so unique. But I was pleasantly surprised. I like that Ms. Hiebert laid things out so clearly. This seems to me a book that can cater to an audience of both beginners and some with experience in crafting. I like that she included a couple of glue recipes in the materials description section, and that several of the projects, like the origami ones, had nice step by step pictorials.
The projects are quite varied, from decorative origami pieces, to a kite, to the wearable cuff. Some are simple, and could be done with children with supervision probably, and some more sophisticated in nature, and good jump off points for mixed media projects. I quite like the pleated lantern, and have done some things myself with sewn paper in the past. The quilled snowflake is lovely and something I am seriously considering making myself soon. I also like the slice form heart project. I have admired many other slice form pieces I have seen before, but have not tried it myself, so this is tempting.
There are several little sidebars featuring tidbits and pictures of the works of various other artists which are quite lovely and inspirational too.
Towards the back of the book, there is a section about decorated papers, texturing, etc. The pictures were very lovely, bright, and inspirational. It was more description of types, rather than instructional. Interesting, but a bit disappointed that it did not contain more. It almost felt like it was tacked on.
The back of the book does have a reference guide for suppliers, and the artists featured, and ends with several pages of templates for the projects.
All in all, I was pretty impressed and inspired. Enough that I went and looked up a few of her other books, and this is on my list for possible hard cover books to get in the future (because sometimes it just nice to have a real page turning book in hand!).
There are so many beautiful and unique projects in here! I love the added facts and ideas as well as the beautiful illustrations. Often you just get a list of instructions or else a lot of completed project with no instructions, but this book combines both. You can get ideas from the examples shown and have a good chance of making them with the included directions.
This is a very nice, fairly comprehensive look at paper crafts. There was more history of paper and papermaking than I was expecting, but it was interesting. Many different types of paper crafts and paper surface treatments are presented. Many of the crafts look easy enough for a beginner and there are several I would like to try!
A comprehensive guide to not only the art of papercraft but to the history and production of paper as well. Lots of advanced projects with clear instructions for the paper lover. It's amazing what can be achieved with a humble piece of paper. Helpful templates in the back and visual guides to creating 3-Demensional shapes, something that I struggle with and this book has been very helpful in that regard
First, I would like to extend thanks to Net Galley and Storey Publishibng for providing this book without charge in exchange for an honest and unbiased review. This book was a nice surprise! Paper is one of my “life loves”. I love the feel of paper texture and I’m always on the lookout for unique paper types, especially when using paper for cards for special people in my life. I loved severa things about this book:
-this book showed me how to make paper- not just one type of paper but several.
-this book told me about paper types that I’ve never heard of before. I was searching the internet for different suppliers, looking for various types.
-this book introduced me to different artists- giving me background on their works and also shared their thoughts and tips from each of them. I love that the author featured a different artist and their project. That was really neat and now I have many new ones to look up on FB, IG, etc. A lot of other “how to” books showcase the works of the author or maybe one other but with each paper project, I was able to gain a new artist’s perspective. That was very cool!
-this book gave me resource lists and even gave me a TON of books that I can continue to read about paper! If you’re someone who loves paper like I do, I truly felt excited to my fingertips (I’ll admit that’s weird but I don’t have to search- the author gave me info to gobble up!)
-this book gives you a project for any level-beginner or experienced. I liked that anyone could work on the projects that were featured.
-this book truly gave you a supply list AND SHOWED YOU WHAT IT IS! That is so important- especially if you don’t live in a bigger city with several art supply stores. Sometimes other books leave you scratching your head and searching on Amazon for an object. This one did not!
All in all- EXCELLENT book that sparked my creativity juices. I would highly recommend it to anyone!
Truly totally unique
When I read the description for Helen Hiebert's book "The Art of Papercraft. Unique one-Sheet Projects Using Origami, Weaving, Quilling, Pop-Up, and Other Inventive Techniques", published by Storey Publishing, LLC, on NetGalley, my first reaction was: I want to review this book. Helen Hiebert is a author, paper maker, teacher and artist and presents 40 unique and distinctive projects from various artists as well as further samples of their work. Hiebert states: "This book will show you how cutting, folding, twisting, tearing, weaving, crumpling, and more can transform a single sheet of paper into fantastic and sometimes unbelievable forms. I hope that you will be inspired to invent your own creations and explore paper beyond the single sheet. The possibilities are endless (p. 2)." The projects range from easy to challenging. Some projects use marbling, stamping, or stenciling whereas others use stretching, weaving, po-ups, origami, cutting, folding or quilling and in this they can inspire a broad range of readers.
I highly recommend this book to readers and artists who are looking for something new and inspirational. The book is colorful and presented with great photographs and a great design, it is artistic and fascinating and challenges the readers to get active. It contains marvelous craft for people with limited financial means, for those who are looking for a "cheap" craft, and also for those who are interested to "just work with paper for once" and who are looking for some ideas. And the readers can even learn about the history of paper used in arts.
The complimentary copy of this book was provided by the publisher through NetGalley free of charge. I was under no obligation to offer a positive review. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

This is a great into to various paper crafts. From paper making, to origami, sculptural designs, and more! Each section has an informative intro and multiple projects with step by step instructions and illustrations to help guide you.
I received an advance copy for review purposes.
The Art of Papercraft is more of what I would consider using papercrafting in fine art versus "crafts" ( card making, scrapbooking, etc). It is very different from other papercrafting books that I have read or own in my personal library.
This book covers a lot of different material - everything from substances/materials used to create paper to how to fold paper. There is a section on what tools to use. Another section that has different recipes for glue. Another part of the book. There is a section on surface treatments which is a personal favorite. There are seemingly countless projects in the book with detailed instructions on how to complete.
Many different artists are featured so there are a vast number of different styles and techniques. Most of the projects are more detailed and use folds, cuts or sculpture techniques to create finished work. A good number of the projects would require more advanced papercrafting skills but there are some would be suitable for beginners as well.
I plan to try a couple of the projects featured and will likely reference the book in the future as it is very comprehensive and informative.
As a child I recall going to a paper mill in the Cheddar Gorge area and seeing how the fibres come together, so knew this book 'The Art o Papercraft' would be interesting to review.
It is divided into seven chapters:
- All about Paper
- Techniques
- Tools & Materials
- Folding
- Cutting
- Constructing
- Papermaking & Surface Treatments
The first three chapters cover the basics of paper crafting. The All about Paper looks at the history of paper, how to identify the grain and how thickness comes about. Papercraft Techniques explains the different types of crafting you can do with paper, be it folding, quilling, cutting, and more. It gives instructions on how to do some basic folding or stitching. Tools and Materials provide details on the equipment that is required: folding & scoring tools, cutting tools, adhesives, and glues (with recipes too), plus specialty tools and materials such as paint or threads.
The Folding chapter provides eight projects for a variety of ways to fold a piece of paper. Each project comes with written instructions alongside photographs for each of the steps in the written part. It tells you also the size of paper required if any tools are needed or templates.
The Cutting chapter covers ten projects that are completed by making before or after folding. Again there are written and photographic instructions to follow, alongside the materials required.
The construction chapter is where it gets more involved with the adding of adhesives, embroidery, electronics, and more. There are twenty-two projects in this section, again with photographic and written instructions.
Paper Making and Surface Treatments provides a list of the variety of techniques to make your own paper: to know how to make the paper itself the author refers to another of their books. Once past this list, there are 11 examples of how to use embellishments on the surface of a paper, such as fasteners, slip-on sleeves or a cut to fold into.
Included at the rear of the book are twenty-one templates that are used in a variety of the above projects, be it for a one-sheet tree, pop-up dragonfly, or the alphabet.
Overall this is an interesting book to use, a good one for beginners as there are lots of easy projects to start with, then moving onto more involved papercraft projects.
I received this book from Netgalley in return for a honest review.
There is so much knowledge in this book: history, artists, step-by-step guides. It was clearly written by someone very passionate about papercraft!
The book is very aesthetically pleasing, with lovely colours and photos throughout!
Some very enchanting inspiration for papercrafting beginners and those with more experience.

This book was very complete. It is perfect for paper crafters beginners and intermediate as it gives a lot of explanation and clear instructions. There are many different techniques and I found it quite interesting. I didn’t have the time, or desire, to try it all but I enjoyed looking at everything.
A lot of ideas for papercrafters. Beginners will appreciate the step by step instructions and clear photographs. Both beginning and intermediate crafters will enjoy seeing the work of different paper artists and discovering new techniques and designs. Each section starts with an overview of the technique followed by projects with different levels of complexities. Templates are included in the back of the book. A nice addition to library collections.
Thanks to NetGalley and the author for a complimentary copy of this book. The contents include a history of paper-making, and a description of the tools needed to work in this art. There are instructions on cutting paper, using different materials, and instructions on how to complete many usual projects. At the end we find templates for lots of the projects. Multitudes of photos accompany each topic.
I'm here because I like origami, quilling, and having fun with paper. I'm also slow to actually make things, so I haven't gotten around to creating any of the projects here - an issue which might be fixed in the future.
"The Art of Papercraft" is wonderful if you're looking for new ideas and inspiration about what you can do with paper. While Helen Hiebert is the one who put the book together, the projects inside were created by many artists worldwide, ranging from young voices to established professionals, each of them introducing a project created using their preferred techniques.
The results therefore cover a wide range of approaches and difficulties. Depending on your expectations and needs, that can be both great... or not so great.
Some projects are very simple and beginner-friendly, while others require much more patience and careful work. Some look highly impressive, while others aren't likely to wow. This can be a bit frustrating both if you want an accessible book for kids, and if you have experience in a particular area and you're looking for projects beyond the basics. Likewise, if you want to explore one area of papercraft in depth, you're likely to be disappointed.
This isn't necessarily a bug, so much as it might be an intentional feature: there's something here for everyone, which means there likely aren't too many people who are interested in everything the book has to offer.
But as a generalist book, "The Art of Papercraft" is perfectly lovely (and beautiful). It contains a bit of history and theory about the art of making paper, it showcases artists whom you might want to follow, and you can pick up many ideas about what you can do with paper, going from the well-known origami and cutting/gluing paper together, to sculptures, to integrating electronics, to making paper with seeds in it (that grow!), to quilling, to turning paper into yarn and clothes.
For each project in this book, you can see another project of the artist who created it - an object of the same type as the one you can make by following the steps, but more advanced, or made on a professional level. This means you can get a bit of know-how, and also an idea about the possibilities of the craft, when you're advanced enough to know what you're doing.
It's a good book to browse for ideas, and for experiments to see if you enjoy doing a particular thing. If you do, you can move on to more in-depth material.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for offering a free ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This is a beautifully presented book that is packed full of useful information. It covers everything from the history of papermaking and paper craft to papercraft techniques and lots of projects to make yourself.
The projects are designed by the author themselves but also a wide range of other professional papercrafters and papermakers. They are clearly illustrated with photographs and most require only a single sheet of paper or card. The projects vary from paper latterns to cards, and from paper based electronics to making paper thread, and so much more. There is so much in this book, yet nothing feels unnecessary.
Alongside the text and projects there are examples of papercraft from numerous proffessional papercrafters. This book not only teaches you practical papercraft techniques it's also packed with inspiration.
I definitely reccomend this book to anyone with an interest in all things paper.
Thank you Netgalley and Storey Publishing for sending me a review copy in exchange for an honest review.
When I think of paper crafts, origami is the first thing that pops into my head and it is only the tip of the iceberg on paper crafts. There are many amazing craft ideas that I want to try out after I reviewed this book. For instance, I was always captivated by paper that one can plant in a garden and one of the projects explains how to create it. Another interesting project is creating a light up card (blushing tiger.) This book has easy-to-read instructions and colorful graphics that will show you exactly what to do.
While I did not see the templates in this version of the book, I look forward to purchasing this book when it is released to partake in the MANY crafts mentioned.
Thank you to NetGalley, Helen Hiebert, and the publisher for this advance readers copy in exchange for my honest review.
Thank you Netgalley and Publisher for providing the ARC in exchange for an honest review!
This books explains in great detail about paper crafts starring from what kind of paper to select to what kind of tools to use to different techniques. There are a lot of craft ideas/examples with pictures and step by step procedure that could help everyone from beginners to advanced crafters. I have done some of these crafts previously and would love to try many of these. This book best suits for beginners and I would recommend this for someone who wants to start paper crafts.
🇬🇧 I expected more from this book. Most of it cannot be folded or reworked like in this book. The instructions are illustrated, but not every step is included. There are no instructions for completing a work. However, it is great for information about paper, various materials and the history of paper. It is more a non-fiction book than a craft book.
There are many Papercraft books in the market, and they offer similar things. While this unique one does have some new ideas, and I can actually do some of it. This is not a book where you look and think: too hard. Some craft books require too many things, or things that are difficult to source.
Helen also includes some interesting facts about paper, as well as beautiful pictures of things you will never do. Overall, this is a book that anyone who loves pulped wood can enjoy. The planter seeds instructions are in the book. Helen's idea is to use them as a gift, which is a cool thought.
