This is a fantastic book to read. It gives clear instructions for all kinds of gardens with lots of information on what you should grow at what time, when to water, fertilize, etc. It is a good book to have when starting to grown your own vegetables.

Wonderful book of garden plans that grow as you do. Very thorough. She makes the hard part (building soil) the easiest part. Rather than get overzealous and plant all kinds of things before your soil is ready she has a simple plan that builds from one year to the next. I am on my second year of a standard garden without a plan and I really wish I had this book two years ago. My present garden is unorganized (a look I don't like) and I spent way too much money that would have been better spent a different way. I have too much in one place, insect problems, and nutritional deficiencies. Most could have been avoided with a better plan. Even though I had soil tests I still have to go back and correct the soil. I simply didn't know what to do or when to do it. And we’re busy so it’s easy for it to get away from you. I think with a plan like this you could avoid some problems up front where its cheaper to deal with them because you can see trouble coming sooner and plan to have what you need sooner. Once things start heading south (insects, nutritional deficiencies, or fungus) it happens pretty quick and you can lose a whole season within days. I found this book well written, well organized, with many quick, easy plans to follow. We would have needed the fence in the first year due to deer. But she didn’t use much in the way of raised beds so the money spent on raised beds would have been a fence in our case. Learned some things for next year. And that should offload the over-planting I did this year and get the diseases down. Nice book! Thanks!

I think this would be very helpful for people who own a house or plan to spend several years at one place. The plot ideas were great and seem easy to adapt. I wish there had been an even more basic plan for folks who can only container garden for a year or so though.

Useful tips for the beginner. Its better to have a book on hand than to search the web for information.

I just bought a house and wanted to plant a vegetable garden, so this book was very timely for me. It gives detailed instructions on setting up your garden for 3 years, something I would never think to do on my own.

It includes 24 garden plans and so many suggestions, including ones on how to combat insects without harming your garden. It is especially nice to have instructions on how to add to your garden, as you get more comfortable with your growing skills. I particularly liked the sections on storing vegetables, as everything seems to be ready to pick at the same time and I never know what to do with it.

A honest review of this book was given in exchange for receiving the ARC from Netgalley.

4.5 starts. Barbara Pleasant, a best-selling author and gardening expert, makes vegetable gardening easy and fun! Like others I've expanded my gardening since the pandemic but it's been many years since I've grown more than herbs so I wish I had found this book sooner because I could have used the tips on growing edibles found in this book. It's a well written, comprehensive, gardening book that contains many useful and lovely illustrations diagraming various (24 no fail) garden plan options!! It answers almost any question you may possibly have and includes step-by-step instructions for a variety of summer and fall gardens. both vertical and horizontal, whether you're growing in beds or containers. It's especially useful for those that want to grow edibles from seed. The layouts, supply lists, advice about water, fertilizers, insects and mulch, and even year 1,2,3 advice is wonderful. My only criticism is that while I love the sketches of garden plans, I'd love to see more photos of actual vegetable and herb gardens. I'd also love photos of the Top 10 insects. Can you tell that I love visuals?! Originally published in 2010, this second edition is due out in early 2022. Thank you to NetGalley and the author for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.

I just reviewed Starter Vegetable Gardens, 2nd Edition by Barbara Pleasant. #StarterVegetableGardens2ndEdition #NetGalley #BarbaraPleasant #VegetableGardening

Love the cover and title was catchy too! I’m all about learning any tips and tricks to make gardening easier and this one definitely did NOT disappoint.

What did I like? I really wish I’d seen this before starting my first year of gardening. Basically we threw seeds in ground to see what would grow and what didn’t. I like a plan and this had a variety. I loved the idea to just grow in a bag and this is one method I hope to try next year. I also need to test my soil, it seems unavoidable as I learn more about making stuff grow.

Would I recommend or buy? I really want a copy of this book now and not wait until February next year. I loved the ideas and tips included. I would recommend to anyone loving or learning how to plan a garden. This was an absolute fun book to look through and see the different plans! Five huge stars!

I received a complimentary copy to read and voluntarily left a review.

This is an excellent gardening book for anyone who wants to plan there garden and include vegetable growing.

It gives a long term project over 3 years and has great details and pictures on how to achieve it. I loved that it starts small for those with little confidence in gardening or have a small space, growing just out of bags is brilliant.

It’s well thought out giving great examples of gardens with borders that you can use.

I would definitely buy it if I saw it in a garden centre of bookshop.

Thank you Net Galley and publisher for advance copy.

Great book for beginner gardeners which will be SO much better in written and published format than a digital copy. I agree with another reviewer who suggests photos of the plants when grown, or growing. Sometimes as a beginner I am not sure what I have planted should look like or if it's a rogue weed!

A must have if you're considering having a garden (or struggling with the one you have). I have a black thumb but love to cook and have been very interested in learning to grow my own food. This amazing guide includes 24 garden plans and an endless amount of tips and tricks for how to combat insects (organically), how to best grow, harvest and store a plethora of veggies and how to start small and then add on as your skill level increases. Genius.
