Lisa Jackson's *The Third Grave* is a chilling and suspenseful thriller that will keep you hooked from beginning to end. Although this is the fourth book in the Savannah series, it can be read as a standalone.
Twenty years ago, two young women, the Duval sisters, vanished without a trace. Now, their bodies have been discovered in a crypt in the basement of an old mansion. Detective Pierce Reed and his partner, Detective Sylvie, are assigned to the case and quickly realize they are dealing with a killer determined to keep the past buried.
As a longstanding fan of Lisa Jackson's work, I found *The Third Grave* to be an outstanding addition to her repertoire. The book is well-written, filled with suspense, and keeps you guessing until the very end. The plot is complex and twisty, and the characters are well-developed and realistic.
One aspect I particularly enjoyed was the setting. Savannah is a beautiful and historic city, and Jackson does an excellent job of bringing it to life in her writing. The old mansion where the bodies are found contributes to the overall atmosphere of suspense.
I also appreciated the way Jackson wove together the past and the present. The story is told from multiple perspectives—those of the detectives, the victims' families, and the killer—allowing the reader to gain a comprehensive understanding of the events leading up to the murders.
Overall, I thought *The Third Grave* was a fantastic read. I would highly recommend it to fans of Lisa Jackson and anyone who enjoys a good thriller.
Some of the things I liked about this book include:
- The well-developed characters
- The suspenseful plot
- The atmospheric setting
- The intertwining of past and present
There were a few aspects that I didn't enjoy as much:
- The ending was somewhat predictable
- Some of the characters were not particularly likable
I believe this book would be an excellent choice for a book club, as it presents many different themes worth discussing, such as grief, loss, and the power of the past.
I didn’t enjoy this book. There was so many things that were repetitive and this really annoyed me. I also couldn’t warm to the characters which was disappointing
I must firstly apologise for the amount of time it has taken me to provide a review of this book, my health was rather bad for quite some time, something that had me in hospital on numerous occasions and simply didnt leave me with the time I once had to do what I love most.
Unfortunately that does mean I have missed the archive date for many of these books, so It would feel unjust throwing any review together without being able to pay attention to each novel properly.
However, I am now back to reading as before and look forward to sharing my honest reviews as always going forward. I thank you f0r the patience and understanding throughout x
Great book! Excellent storyline, interesting characters with an amazing twist I did not see coming.
Keeps you on your toes the whole way through.
Plenty To Like..
What is the mystery behind the old Beaumont mansion? Detective Pierce Reed is assigned the case, whilst reporter wife Nikki needs the scoop. A deftly drawn cast populate an entertaining, twisting and turning, action packed read with plenty to like.
A gripping thriller. I enjoyed the characters of Reed and Nikki and you found yourself routing for them. I did find the story quite confusing from the beginning and found it difficult to get in to the story until around have way; this may be because I have not read another title in the Savannah series, as this is number 4. The pace really picked up for the last quarter of the book and the plot became very gripping, so I am glad I stuck with it. I would like to read the next book in the series, if one is released, as I am now more familiar with the characters. I liked how the story jumped around between characters and settings, and how the book was not based solely on one individuals point of view.
This was disappointing to me. I didnt like the characters and I thought the story was a little ridiculous. All in all not one for me.
My first book by this author and I wasn’t disappointed. A great crime story packed with intrigue and tension.
Full of tension, I raced through the pages to discover the conclusion! An interesting web of characters set in an action packed story which kept me analysing motives trying to guess how the plot would reveal itself. A very satisfying read!
Lots of intriguing things happening, not to mention some shady characters.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for a copy of the book.
Really enjoyed this, was my first book by Lisa Jackson. Could not put it down, characters were believable , and a good few twists! Will recommend to friends!
I wanted to like this story, but was put off somewhat by the main character, a reporter who kept doing stupid things. It was hard to feel any empathy with her, so I didn't really care what happened to her. She seemed to sail through life, messing things up for everyone else, with scant regard for consequences or norms of behaviour. I might have given the book four stars, but I also got rather irritated by the large amount of repetition. The idea was quite good, but the result could have been improved.
It is rather ironic that those books with taglines telling you how wonderful they are, often seem to be rather lacking.
A great boo that lacked or wanted for nothing.
Gripping, page turning and heart pounding!
The characters were believable and the story was too. Thank you to netgalley and the publishers and the author for the opportunity to read this book for my honest opinion
I’ve always wanted to read a book by the author Lisa Jackson as I hear great things about her books, I have to say I wasn’t disappointed I really enjoyed this book
‘The third grave’ is the fourth in the ‘Savannah’ series which follows a crime writer and her policeman husband. In this case an old, dilapidated mansion is flooded and reveals two skeletons in what appears to be a burial ground consisting of three graves. This begins the two fold mystery of who these skeletons once were and also where is the missing third?
I really enjoyed the setting behind this mystery with the superstitions and dark tales that come with the deep south. The only niggle I had as a first time reader was that the central character, Nikki, is unrelenting as a crime writer/investigator but very annoying as a person.
Jackson is a great writer though with her descriptions and pacing perfectly crafted and I did enjoy the dramatic twists as this mystery unfolded.
I love the author's other books so I was excited to read this one. It wasn’t my favourite but I still really enjoyed it. The setting was the best part for me — it was creepy, and had a fantastic atmosphere that meant I could immerse myself into the story.
The pace was fast, as it usually is, and it was easy to read.
An addictive, creepy mystery with easy to relate to characters. Thanks to Netgalley, the author and publisher a chance to read and review this book.
Bronco Craven’s grandfather had been the gardener at the crumbling Beaumont mansion in its heyday, and when he was dying, he told Bronco about hidden treasure in the old place. For Bronco, it was too good to pass up on. The place had been empty for a while. So he took his tools to break in, and take a look, along with any goodies that he could find there. What he found shook him up badly. Hidden away were three graves and the remains of two bodies. Although Bronco was a petty crook himself, he couldn’t let this go, so he did something he had never done before. He reported the crime to the police.
Twenty years ago, three sisters had gone to the cinema together and then disappeared. It was obvious that two of them had been murdered, but where was the youngest? The grave was there, but the body was missing. Detective Pierce Reed was put in charge of the investigation. Reed’s wife Nikki, was an author of thrillers and determined to break into crime reporting for a big newspaper. The only thing with her is she only sees the glory and not the danger, which has tragic consequences.
Nikki makes the story unpredictable because you never know just what she will get up to. She did take some warming to for me. It seems that people were hiding what they knew, but much more than I realised. I enjoyed the story as there were some very twisty outcomes that I hadn’t a clue would happen.
I wish to thank the publisher and Net Galley for an e-copy of this book, which I have reviewed honestly.
Thank you to NetGalley, Hodder & Staughton and Lisa Jackson for an ARC in return for an honest review.
I didn’t realise that this was a book within a series but I don’t think it overly mattered as the plot was easy to follow. This is a great, satisfying thriller which keeps you guessing throughout. I loved it!
Did not know there was a series to this, but did not stop me enjoying it
Three graves, two sisters - so series Rose
Twists guessing games and red herrings
A story with plenty of twists and turns
what happened?
Thank you netgalley, Lisa Jackson and Bookouture
I would like to thank Netgalley and Hodder & Stoughton for an advance copy of The Third Grave, the fourth novel in the Savannah series, featuring Detective Pierce Reed and his wife, reporter Nikki Gillette.
When two skeletons are discovered in the decaying Beaumont mansion they are quickly identified as Holly and Poppy Duval who disappeared over twenty years ago. The problem is there is an empty third grave beside them and no sign of their sister, Rose, who vanished at the same time. Detective Pierce Reed is on the case, as is his wife, Nikki. It soon becomes clear that the killer isn’t finished.
I thoroughly enjoyed The Third Grave which is an entertaining read with plenty of twists and turns. I haven’t read this series before and I liked what I saw, so I can see me backtracking to the earlier novels at some point. I thought it worked fine as a stand-alone as I didn’t feel the loss of not having read its predecessors.
The plot is absorbing once the reader accepts that realism isn’t a thing, but entertainment is. I liked the way the author builds her plot for the reader via the separate investigations, because, of course, Pierce and Nikki don’t share, I assume, for ethical reasons on his part and because he doesn’t want her investigating on her part. The two different points of view give the reader a wider perspective as each has their own approach. There is plenty of action in the novel with more death and a few tense scenes, culminating in the almost obligatory showdown and that is exciting. The author saves her best twists for this finale when all is explained. Some I guessed, some were a complete surprise but the journey was never less than engrossing.
I can’t say that I particularly took to any of the characters. I think Nikki and Pierce’s relationship is slightly dysfunctional as it seems to consist of him telling her what to do and her ignoring him. There is personal heartache for them, but he doesn’t seem overly supportive. Not that she’s much better as she seems to court danger. Weird and repetitive.
The Third Grave is a good read that I have no hesitation in recommending.
