I enjoyed the story and the twists of the premise but I just did not like the main character. She was self-centred and unbelievable. Which detracted from my enjoyment of this novel. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the chance to review it.
The fourth book in the series, I haven't the others so this was my first Lisa Jackson book.
Really enjoyed it, lots of twists and turns and the setting is great too.
The case of the three missing Duval sisters who were last seen as they left the cinema twenty years ago!
Lots of layers to unravel in this one, at its centre a police investigation and an investigative reported who will stop at nothing to get the story she wants.
A tense mysterious read full of deception, will have you speculating throughout.
I started to read this book, but despite normally enjoying this style of books, I just really could not get into the story.
The style of writing was fine and what was to be expected from Lisa Jackson, but the story simply did not pull me in this time. Perhaps it was timing or my mood.
I would still like to thank the author, NetGalley and the publisher for the chance to review this book in return for an honest review.
Savannah #4
The old Beaumont mansion is a rotting shell of it's once grand self, especially after a disastrous hurricane sweeps through Georgia. The storm does more than dislodge shutters and shingles. It leads to a grisly find in the cellar: three graves but only two skeletons.
I did not realise that this book was part of a series when I requested it. A hurricane uncovers three graves. The skeletons belong to sisters who disappeared with their younger sister twenty years ago. Nikki is an author/reporter who is married to the detective investigating the case. Nikki keeps getting in the way and putting her life in danger.
Holly Poppy and Rose went to the movies with Owen twenty years ago. Owen came back but the girls never did. Holly and Poppy's skeletons have been found in the graves. But where is Rose? Owen is still the prime suspect in his sisters' disappearance. Detective Pierce Reed is investigating the case. His wife Nikki is an author/reporter. She thinks this would make a good storyline for her next book. Although she was annoying, Nikki was my favourite character. There's plenty of twists to keep you guessing. It took me a couple of chapters to get into the story, but once I did, I was hooked.
I would like to thank #NetGalley #HodderStaughton and the author #LisaJackson for my ARC of #TheThirdGrave in exchange for an honest review.
This fourth book in the series with Pierce and Nikki is the first one I read. It was an ok but not very special book; I found the characters, the story and the setting not very interesting or special. An old house that once belonged to a rich family; another rich family; a journalist who writes true crime books married to a detective and a missing (?) body. Not very original and therefore very predictable. What I especially don’t like in a book as this is that almost at the end two people are meeting up and they start a very scripted dialogue about all that’s happened and who killed who and why. People do not talk like that, especially not when they’re mad at each other.
Since this is a Lisa Jackson book, I hoped for more. Maybe it’s the series, maybe it’s me, but I cannot say I enjoyed this one as much as I’ve enjoyed some of her other books.
Thanks to Netgalley for this digital review copy.
I loved this read and highly recommend it. I enjoyed all the twists and turns in this book and loved how it all unfolded. This is the first book I have read by Lisa Jackson and I really enjoyed it.
Oh I loved this. I suspected one part of it before the end but the journey to get there was so good. It was intriguing and a real page turner. This is the first book by Lisa Jackson that I've read but I'll definitely seek out her other work.
Excellent, a fantastic read.
Thank you to Net Galley, to Hodder & Stoughton and to Lisa Jackson for the advance copy in exchange for a review.
Lisa Jackson is an author who I can trust to always deliver a good book
The Third Grave was gripping and tenses, I could not get enough of it!
A very twisty murder mystery.
After a hurricane two graves of children and one empty grave they belong to the three sisters who disappeared twenty years ago, but where is the third sister?
Nikki is a reporter married to Reed a detective who is investigating the case while Nikki keeps getting in the way, even putting her life in danger and losing her baby in the process.
Kept me hooked but ended up with a few questions at the end,
Nikki was vey irritating and you just wanted to slap her, and I felt very sorry for her husband.
Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC and I`m leaving this review voluntarily.
The publishers invited me to read this ‘new gripping thriller’ – but I don’t think they’ll be sending me another invitation! Described as ‘A cold case. A recent discovery. A very real threat ….’, it sounded just up my street. This is the first novel I have read by this author, and it will be the last. I’m sorry, but this is the most badly written (to the point of being childish) and ridiculous book I’ve read in a very long time, in fact I became angry when I was reading it. It felt like a want-to-be-author’s first attempt at writing. How many times can the same thing be repeated within a few pages? “All she knew was that they’d been ID’d as the older two of the long-missing Duval sisters, Holly and Poppy.” One page later: “… the two bodies had been identified, as many had speculated, to be the two older Duval sisters, Holly and Poppy.” The plot was implausible, the characters were ridiculous, the ending was preposterous, and if I hadn’t promised to review it I would have stopped reading after the first chapter. Many reviewers seem to have loved this – it’s a good job we’re not all the same isn’t it?
After a hurricane sweeps through Savannah Bronco decides to look for the treasure that his grandad told him is hidden in the basement of the neglected home of the Beaumont's. But instead of treasure he finds two bodies. Reed leads the twenty year old cold case.
I really enjoyed this. There was plenty going on to keep the reader interested and trying to work out who knows what.
The most unlikeable character was Reed's wife Nikki Gilette a journalist. Oh my, what a selfish woman she is. Like a bull in a china shop in she wades. Never thinking about the consequences of her actions that not only puts herself in danger but others also with devastating results.
Thanks to Netgalley and Hodder and Stoughton for the ARC in return for an honest review.
Absolutely fantastic read. I have loved this and been completely unable and unwilling to put this one down.
This is a great read which I will be highly recommending.
This is the first time I’ve picked up a Lisa Jackson book, and I finished it in a couple of days as it was so fast-paced.
I did guess some of the twists early on but still enjoyed the read.
This was my first book in the series but I didnt feel that I missed out a lot by picking it up here. It was an entertaining story with good character development and I could see the relationships between the main characters.
I was given an advance copy by netgalley and the publishers but the review is entirely my own.
A great crime story with lots of twists and turns keeping you on tenterhooks! Hard to put down and some nail biting moments!
The fourth book in the Nikki Gilette/Pierce Reed series set in Savannah. The discovery of two bodies buried in the basement of the old Beaumont mansion is shocking enough but more disturbing is the fact that next to the bodies a third grave is empty. This brings up a cold case of three children who'd disappeared years ago that Reed has to reopen. Nikki as is her won't manages to get herself into ore trouble than Reed is comfortable with leading to tragic consequences..
The two bodies are identified as Poppy and Holly Duval who disappeared 20 years ago but there is no sign of their missing younger sister. was the third grave meant for her? A twisty thriller that keeps you on the edge of your seat because as fast as Redd and Gilette work it seems the killer still has work to do!
It took me a while to get into this book and to be honest the wife’s character was so annoying that I nearly gave up. However I carried on and after the first third of the novel I think I just accepted that she was going to be annoying and moved past it and really enjoyed the rest of the story. It was a fast paced read that did have me guessing who the murderer was. Overall it was a good escape and held my attention after the first third. Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for allowing me to read a preview copy of this book.
My first Lisa Jackson book. This is the fourth in a series. It’s a real who dunnit and it kept me gripped. However, I really wasn’t keen on the lead character, Nikki. I know you aren’t supposed to like her but for me that spoiled my enjoyment of the book in a way. I was so concentrating on my dislike for the character that it got in the way. Strange one. Overall, I enjoyed it but I don’t know if I would go back and read the rest of the series.
Missing for decades, it looks like the case of the three Duval sisters is ready to be solved when the bodies of the sisters are found in the basement of a long abandoned house....but only two sisters are found. Where is Rose, the youngest one? Is she buried elsewhere or still alive?
Pierce Reed is assigned to the case but can he solve it before his wife, newspaper reporter Nikki Gillette? And is anyone else in danger at the hands of the killer?
I really enjoyed this book, thought it had a great premise and it kept me guessing all the way through. Would recommend,
