Listened and was riveted by the audiobook of this fantastic slow burn romance. Focusing on Poppy’s search for happiness after getting into a rut, the reconnection with her best friend from college Alex is told across the present day and also through their past vacations. With the intoxicating combination of slow burn romance and glamorous vacations, this was the perfect antidote to lockdown quarantine. The narrator is excellent, with a relaxing voice and a contrast between male and female characters was not jarring at all. I think I enjoyed this more than “Beach Read” and can’t wait to read more by Emily Henry.
GOD THIS BOOK WAS SO ADDICTIVE.
Five star read.
Miss Emily Henry blows my mind every single time - she's honestly starting to become one of my favourite writers.
Her ability to write such three dimensional characters is so inspiring and amazing to watch. I loved Poppy and Alex's love story. I loved them. I love love.
Such a cute book.
This is absolutely a summer read - as Poppy and Alex travel the world on their summer holidays over 12 years, it really transports you to wherever they are holidaying.
This is your typical friends but actually in love with each other storyline and there are a lot of missed oppportunities, miss communications etc between the main characters. I personally loved the narration too, she has a gorgeous voice. I can't put my finger on exactly why but this slightly missed the mark for me so i'll be giving it a 3/5 stars.
Thanks to Netgally, the author and publisher for this ARC copy.
This book is a cute read that is perfect for by the pool (it will make you crave a holiday though).
Poppy and Alex swear they hate each other when they meet, but soon an unlikely friendship blossoms and they promise to go away on vacation together every year.
Over the course of 12 summers we see their relationship evolve and change.
You won't win any prizes for guessing how this one ends, but it doesn't make the journey there any less enjoyable. You and Me on Vacation is a really cute romance, that reminded me a bit of When Harry Met Sally.
3.5
I’m so between a 3 and 4 for this one. For the most part it’s super cute but I found myself getting confused between the time lines a lot like mid chapter of the past I’d forget and think it was present day and vice versa. Poppy and Alex were pretty cute, as far as contemporary romance books this was one of the better ones I’ve read. I’ve had Beach Read on my kindle for ages now and this has really spurred me on to finally pick it up this summer!
Such a cute book! Friends to lovers trope, gorgeous holiday destination, what else could I ask for in a romance novel? Poppy was at times a bit annoying, and Alex seemed like he could only talk in monosyllables, but still so heart warming.
5 stars!
I received an audiobook copy of Emily Henry's newest release in exchange for an honest review from NetGalley.
I had absolutely loved Beach Read by Emily Henry and I was curious to see if I would love this just as much, and my god it did not disappoint!
Poppy and Alex meet when they're younger and they don't really like one another. Then every single year they go on a trip together, until, two years ago when something happened whilst they were away.
Poppy who is desperate to reconnect with her old friend, comes up with a trip that will end with the wedding of Alex' brother.
You and Me on Vacation takes you from present to the past until the past catches up with the present and you finally find out what happens two years prior.
I listened to this audiobook in one go because I was so desperate to find out what happened on that holiday and the book was just so good.
If you love a good romance but one that keeps you on your toes, please read this or listen to it, because I can't recommend it enough!
I had already pre-ordered a physical copy for when it releases in June but this was a great way to shorten the wait!
At a time where going on trips to gorgeous destinations on my bucket list is more and more difficult, books set in these destinations are vital. Luckily, this portrays Palm Springs beautifully. Emily Henry is just as good a travel writer as Poppy seems to be.
This book is in a split narrative, with the present day woven between tales from Alex and Poppy's previous holidays. I thought the flashbacks were really clearly laid out, which I loved, but also interrupted the flow of the story for me a little, and I found some of them a little jarring.
This is fantastic escapist fiction with a couple I really rooted for and a gorgeous setting. I enjoyed it, but unfortunately not as much as I did Beach Reads.
Alex and Poppy, what a cute couple.
It’s a long time since I’ve read a book, friends to lovers so cute.
I saw this available on Netgalley to listen to so that’s what I did!
Alex and Poppy have been friends since University, we don’t know how or why they lost contact as they used to take a vacation together yearly.
In their younger poorer days it was a budget holiday.
Somehow years down the line Poppy has perks to her job and the idea of contacting Alex to see if he’d like to accompany her on a paid holiday comes into her mind. She doesn’t tell him how she acquired the holiday though!
All in all, it works out and they both travel as friends.
Poppy made me laugh lots of times, she’s got a great sense of humour and her retorts really are spot on.
Alex is a little more serious however, he has a lovely personality. It shines through the pages how these two should be an item.
What does this vacation hold for them both?
Just don’t assume all is an easy ride as it’s not.
A really good book that holds its own in this genre.
The first book I’ve actually read by this author even-though I own one other of her books.
Poppy and Alex have been going on holiday together every year for ten years, two years ago on their last trip something happens to make them not speak for over two years, Poppy feels desperately lonely without Alex and decides to text him, when he texts back Poppy hatches a plan for another summer holiday together
The perfect summer read!
I loved the characters, the friendship between Poppy and Alex is fun from the start, the anecdotes of their meeting gave me a real insight into how their relationship would pan out and made me hooked into falling their story. The locations in this book were amazing, I felt as if I could have been there.
The narration fit in perfectly with the tone of the book- simply fantastic
This book is a perfect tonic to everyday life!! It is the best audiobook I have ever listened to, it all fits together so well; the narrator delivers the story wonderfully, the plot is fab and I couldn’t stop laughing to myself!
Every Poppy needs an Alex, the banter, the friendship, the possible love? I could happily sit and listen to it all over again right now.
You and Me on Vacation follows Poppy and Alex, two best friends who have taken a summer trip together every year, until two years ago when things went wrong. They haven't spoken in the two years since the eventful trip, but Poppy is determined to get their friendship back on track with one more summer trip.
I adored Beach Read, Emily Henry's 2020 release, so was excited to pick this one up. I was sure nothing could beat Beach Read, which received so much well deserved hype last year, but somehow I loved You and Me on Vacation even more.
Poppy and Alex had a really great friendship, full of fun and hilarious banter. I loved their friendship from the first page and loved getting to see their friendship develop through the flashbacks to previous summers. I also enjoyed getting to see them repair their relationship and develop it further as the present day timeline continued. It was a really sweet friends-to-lovers romance, with a lot of heart and two characters who you could tell genuinely cared so much for one another. I often find it difficult in friends-to-lovers romances to understand what kept the friends together for so long. However, this was not the case with this book. I found myself fearing for their friendship as they became closer, making it easy for me to accept their reasoning for never being together previously.
Another thing I enjoyed about this book was the travel aspect. We get to see Poppy and Alex take various summer trips throughout the book and I loved getting to travel with them. With not being able to travel with the current situation in the world, getting to escape to other places through books is even more special. It was a lot of fun to see some of the adventures these friends had in a lot of different beautiful locations.
One thing that has remained consistent from Beach Read, my first and only other read from this author, is the writing. Emily Henry is such a talented author and I fell in love with her all over again while reading this book. It was both laugh-out-loud funny and incredibly heartwarming all at once. I laughed and cried with these characters and found myself completely and utterly invested in their journey.
I adored this book and I can't wait to see what Emily Henry does next.
The perfect summer read!
This it the story of Poppy and Alex and their summer trips away together, the best of friends....
This is expertly written, perfectly narrated and has you wondering what happened 2 summers ago!
I loved this book so much and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys this genre and anything to easily immerse yourself in for the duration.
Many thanks to the author and NetGalley for gifting me this arc in exchange for an honest, unbiased review.
Poppy and Alex meet in a chance encounter at college. They're chalk and cheese and both leave the encounter without any wish to speak again. Yet a year later they find themselves on a road trip to their home state of Ohio. By the end of the trip both an unlikely friendship and a pact have been made. They decide to go on a summer vacation each year and over the next ten years they become inseperable. That is, until a trip to Croatia where something goes wrong and the drift apart for two years. This summer, Poppy feels lost in her life and asks Alex if he will go on one more summer trip. to recapture their friendship and determine their future.
I love, love, loved this book. It’s easy going, light hearted and enjoyable. Poppy and Alex are the epitome of opposites attract and I loved their quirky no holds barred friendship and the secret love they hide from eachother. Not only that, I loved their travel stories and road trips and I felt like I was on holiday with them.
In any other book, chapters set in (at least) ten different time periods would be confusing and alienating for the reader but Emily Henry totally pulls it off. Each time period adds rich detail and intriguing about what went so wrong that they are estranged for two years.
The narrator of the audiobook was spot on, she made it really easy engage in the story and captures their characters and their nuances brilliantly.
I was so invested in Alex and Poppy. Romantic suspense? The will they/won’t they tension is like Ross and Rachel on steroids! The sexual tension between them is so intoxicating and so well written that I was I held my breath several times whilst I read. I am so sad to leave those characters behind now I’ve finished the book.
Emily Henry is now a must read author for me. If you love hilarious romantic suspense this is your book. If you haven’t travelled since the pandemic and need to fulfill your wanderlust in the books you read, then this is the book for you. Move it to the top of your TBR list right now, you won’t regret it.
Thank you to Netgalley, Emily Henry and Penguin for the opportunity to review this book in exchange for an honest opinion.
I was kindly given a copy of this audio book by NetGalley & Penguin Random House UK Audio in return for an honest review.
I had already been gifted the actual book which I devoured, loved and have reviewed below.
I was really excited for this book, as last year I read and absolutely loved Beach Read by Emily Henry and so I wasn’t surprised when I also really enjoyed You & Me on Vacation. I read it every chance I could; I was just so interested to find out more about Poppy & Alex and if fate would be on their side!
They are two friends that are complete opposites and shouldn’t really click, but somehow they do. But only after giving each other another chance, when they unexpectedly meet for the second time for a shared car ride back to their home town for the summer.
That summer, they made a promise that no matter what - even if they’re apart the rest of the year - every summer, they’ll take a trip together. That is until 2 years ago, when they took their last trip and haven’t spoken to each other since.
Poppy is now feeling lost in her life and decides to take the plunge & ask Alex to join her on another (potentially final) trip in the hopes of getting things back to how they were & feel true happiness like she used to whenever they adventured together!
I thought the flash backs to each trip were such a lovely look into their friendship, each one creeping slowly towards revealing THAT Croatia trip that supposedly ruined everything - which I desperately wanted to know what the hell happened!
All the while apprehensively reading about this current summer trip. Wishing things will work out between them, despite things going so wrong on all aspects and almost assuredly heading to a further disaster!
Completely safe to say I was fully invested in Poppy & Alex’s story and I thoroughly enjoyed it!
I will definitely be looking to read more of Emily Henry’s books in the future.
If you love a ‘will they-won’t they’ story full of funny flashbacks and loveable characters, you should definitely give this a read!
Poppy and Alex have been best friends since high school, and have for years been hiding their romantic feelings from each other. I just there was a lack of chemistry between them. A nice story but I just didn't connect with the characters. It moved back and forth between previous holidays and present day. There were a lot of flashbacks and for this reason I didn't warm to it as I felt I was missing out on the present. It was a well written book and well narrated in the audiobook. I accessed the audio and book and moved between the two.
It was a quick light hearted read and enjoyable if you are looking for a beach, holiday read with romance and travel involved.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for an ARC.
Omg I absolutely adored this story!
You and Me on Vacation follows 2 very unlikely friends as they spend their holidays together leading up to present day when they are trying to piece their friendship back together. I loved the back and forth over the previous and present holidays it added to the overall build up of the story. You can feel the chemistry and the tension building and burning between them untill it explodes. Gah I have no words to describe how much I enjoyed this book.
I listened to the audio along side reading it and I adored the narrator she did and amazing job of bringing Poppy and Alex to life. I nearly spat my drink out several times whilst listening to it as I was laughing so hard. I will definitely be reading more by Emily Henry (I definitely need to read Beach Read) and will be looking out for more audios narrated by Julia Whelan.
What a totally wonderful book for the summer!! Poppy and Alex have been best friends for life and this story switches back and forth between current day and past holidays. I loved seeing their relationship unfold, and how you get to know both characters so well. There were times this made me laugh out loud - the bit on the Golden Gate Bridge earned me some funny looks as I listened when out walking the dog.
It’s light and perfect for summer, but a great story line that keeps you entertained. I loved the narrator of the audiobook too, she reads really well, her characterisation fit poppy and Alex well and it bought an extra level to the story.
Thanks so much for this arc.
I’d like to thank NetGalley and Penguin Random House for approving me for an ARC of this book. After read Beach Read last year and putting it in my top 10 reads of 2020, to say I was excited to listen to this one was an understatement.
Whilst I was excited to start this one there were some nerves too. What if this didn’t live up to the expectations I had after Beach Read? What if I hated it and felt that deep pitted disappointment us readers get when all the hype wasn’t worth it? Thankfully I don’t have any of those feelings instead I am grinning from ear to ear because Emily Henry has done it again! She has written another knockout, romance read packed with charismatic characters and a plot line that I was addicted to.
Even better Julia Whelan delivers a narration that drew all kinds of emotions from me. I was laughing at the banter between Poppy and Alex and I cried during the speeches in those final scenes. Julia gives both Poppy and Alex unique voices and for a woman to deliver a man’s voice in a sexy way is brilliant!
The story switches back and forth between present Poppy and Alex to their past holidays. During the chapters where we flip back we learn how the budding friendship began and it is in these stories that my love for both characters grows. Poppy is loud, fierce and fun but under the surface she has deep insecurities about her future and what she wants. Alex is quiet, reserved and sensible, the complete opposite of Poppy. Nothing about Alex and Poppy should work but they have this way of bringing the best out of each other. Their chemistry is undeniable and the banter between them is second to none.
It was pretty clear from the start where this was heading and whilst some may call it predictable I couldn’t think of a better way to end it. I was rooting for Alex and Poppy as individuals and from their first meeting I was willing them to admit their feelings for one another. Emily Henry has written the perfect romance complete with all the tension and intensity us readers love. By the end I was grinning from ear to ear wanting to start the read all over again.
