It took me a little while to get into this story but once I did, I enjoyed it a lot. Dark and twisty.
This is book is the absolute best summer read. It's dark and delicious and the settings and travel are amazing. From cruise ships in Jamaica to a super yacht in the Caribbean, this book is the perfect escape read. I went into this book blind as I've previously read and loved the author's other books. Its a truly amazing story with real and relatable characters.
The scenery may be beautiful but its as dark, twisted and as deceitful as any brilliant psychological thriller should be. Highly recommended xx
Charlotte is making a new life for herself after her divorce with Sam. They were both con artists living a life funded by targets they believe can afford it.
Now in Charlotte’s new life things appear to be going well until she finds out that Sam has disappeared and she starts receiving threatening messages. She quickly gets a job on a cruise liner and hopes to escape whoever is behind the messages.
This is a great thriller, light enough to have some elements of fun and thrilling enough to keep you interested..
Written well and consumed quickly!
Charlotte and Sam are a married couple who steal for a living. They go on luxury cruises, etc, to take money from very wealthy people who – they think – can afford it. Then their relationship falls apart and Charlotte tries to make an honest living for herself.
Her new life is going well until she finds out that Sam has gone missing, and she starts receiving sinister messages. She gets a job as an assistant PA on a private yacht which is cruising to the Caribbean, and thinks that she can get away from whoever is sending the messages.
But it turns out that they’re also onboard and Charlotte has nowhere left to hide. Will she escape their clutches?
I guessed the perpetrator but not all the whys and wherefores, so it was still a mystery that hooked me right to the last page.
Thank you to NetGalley and Headline for an advance reader copy in return for an honest review.
Quite a different premise. Charlotte and Sam used to con wealthy in cruise ships, they fell in love then Sam left. Years later someone was threatening Charlotte.
This was written in past and present with a few twists and turns. I found myself myself scrolling faster as the story moved on. The prose seemed smooth and I was completely entertained by the book. A good one.
Thank you Net galley and Wildfire publishers for this ARC.
I enjoyed this book, a slow starter but by 1/3 of the way in I was hooked.
Charlotte and Sam met on a cruise ship, fell in love and then he left he. A few years later she's moved on and has her own business...until someone from her past threatens her. Sam is missing and Charlotte fears that she might be next.
The story goes between present day and the past when they met on the ship and the events that unfolded.
Thanks Netgalley and the Publisher. This was an okay read, with an okay storyline and okay characters. For me it just did not do it for me I am afraid.
Have read a couple of books previously by this author so was tempted in to this one by previously enjoying the others. This one did not let me down. Was easy to read and flowed well. A few twists and turns which made it a bit more exciting
I have enjoyed both Karen Hamilton’s previous novels, and so was extremely excited to get my hands on a copy of this one! A thriller which tells the story of a woman who together with her ex used to rob wealthy cruise passengers. A quick and easy read that I found myself picking up after a long day to unwind. Brilliant gripping read and fully recommend this.
This really is the perfect holiday read and I raced through it.
I feel like I’ve just come back from a cruise around the Caribbean, albeit a pretty scary one!
It’s deliciously dark, well written and entertaining. I’d strongly recommend this book.
A former con-artist stuck on a yacht in the Caribbean, with a storm rolling in...and someone who wants to harm her? COUNT ME IN!
Charlotte and Sam seemed like the perfect couple to everyone they came into contact with, but they had a dangerous secret. While both of them held jobs on cruise ships, they would steal from the passengers. Anything they could get their hands on.
It was all fun and games until Charlotte realized she was in over her head, and almost ended up in dark water.
A few years later, Charlotte has turned her life around. She no longer steals from others, and she is no longer with Sam...although they are technically still married. Then, Sam starts texting her out of the blue, with a warning that danger is near. At the same time, a mysterious person reaches out to her, saying they know what she and Sam did.
When Charlotte gets the opportunity to work a wedding party on a luxury yacht in the Caribbean, she can’t refuse. It’s good, well-earned money. Between the champagne-filled meals and amongst the wealthy passengers, there is someone on board who wants Charlotte to pay for what she and Sam have done...and they will do anything for justice.
I was anchored to this book after a bit of a slow and steady start. It really picks up about 1/3 through, and I cruised through it. It’s suspenseful and atmospheric, with beautiful details of the Caribbean and sea life.
Charlotte is such a fleshed-out character, and I loved getting to know her. The story is told in alternating timelines, and really takes time delving into how Charlotte ended up with Sam and getting over her head in regards to their crimes. Care is also given in showing that she actually has a conscience. Her hubby? Hmmm...maybe not so much.
The present timeline on the yacht was the most riveting as I tried to figure out who, out of an eclectic group of passengers and workers, had it out for Charlotte. It all leads to a suspenseful, and maybe just a tiny bit OTT finale...with an entertaining and delicious last few pages to devour.
This is one trip you will want to embark on when it sets sail on: 1/18/22.
Thank you to Wildfire and NetGalley UK for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I have enjoyed Karen Hamilton’s previous two novels, and so was extremely excited to get my hands on this one! A remarkably written thriller telling the story of a woman who together with her ex used to rob wealthy cruise passengers. Highly recommended!
I have seen this novel billed as ‘the perfect holiday read’ for 2021 and after racing through its last few pages, I must agree – whether or not you manage to get abroad for a holiday or stay at home, this book will be a perfect read. Set in the alluring world of cruise ships and super yachts, this novel introduces us to Charlotte, a flawed character who is trying to redeem herself. Previously, she and her estranged husband Sam defrauded wealthy individuals onboard cruise ships to afford their lifestyle, but when he disappears without trace, Charlotte feels in danger, too, and hurriedly accepts a job onboard a Caribbean yacht, hoping to put several thousand miles between herself and harm’s way and also to remove some crucial evidence. It is a decision she will come to regret bitterly as someone sinister is clearly on her trail...
I raced through the pages of this thriller and was sorry to see it end. Fortunately, Karen Hamilton has published a couple of other thrillers that I can now devour as a follow-on! Thank you to the publishers and NetGalley for the free ARC of The Ex-Husband that allowed me to produce this honest and unbiased review of a novel by a writer who is sure to garner plenty more fans.
Sorry but this book wasn't for me, not enough action and no 'grab' factor but thank you to Netgalley and Headline Publishers for giving me the opportunity to read this book.

A must read.
Charlotte and Sam were partners. In life, and in crime. They never stole from anyone who couldn't afford it. Wealthy clients, luxury cruise ships. It was easy money, and harmless. At least, that's what Charlotte told herself, until the world caved in on her. But now, years after she tried to put that past life behind her, it comes rushing back when her estranged ex-husband Sam suddenly goes missing - and someone threatens to expose what they did. Desperate to escape whoever is tormenting her, Charlotte takes a job as events planner for an engagement party onboard a superyacht in the Caribbean. For a while, her plan seems to have worked, nothing but open ocean and clear skies ahead. Until it becomes clear that she's no longer a thousand miles away from harm. Because whoever is behind it all is onboard too. And now there's nowhere left to run.
I loved Karen hamilton books. She's a great author.
Highly recommended from me.
Thanks to NetGalley and Headline for giving me an advanced copy of this book.
I read The Ex-Husband but I didn’t enjoy it. More excitement is needed!
I’d say this is an average thriller and would recommend to new readers.
If you’ve EVER read a thriller before than I can’t recommend this, you’ll have it figured out by the second half.
