I was looking forward to reading Rock Paper Scissors as I’d heard a lot about it.
It started well, with Amelia and Adam travelling to a weekend away which Amelia has won in a competition she doesn’t remember entering.
Amelia and Adam take turns in narrating the story, which does work well , they both talk of how the other person won’t be returning home after the weekend away, so there is a threatening, disturbing element running through right from the beginning.
When they finally arrive at their accommodation, it is locked up and appears deserted. After looking around the outside, they return to the front - which is now unlocked. After entering, it still appears to be deserted, and of course there’s a spooky cellar, and a strange woman living nearby...
*Spoiler alert*
Adam suffers from face blindness, but can’t tell his wife from another woman? Even if they had similar hairstyles, which he claims mislead him, surely their voices, mannerisms, etc would be different?
For me, this book had such potential, but just didn’t flow.
The ending needed so much explanation that it was practically a whole story of its own!
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for allowing me to read an advance copy of this book in return for my honest review, which, sadly in this case, is not such a positive one.
Alice Feeney is by far one of my favourite authors to date – Without fail, I know what I am getting, and I know that I am in for a wild ride!
If you’ve never read anything by this author before, then I highly recommend you change that. If dark and disturbing psychological thrillers are your thing then Alice Feeney is the writer for you. Often, I find myself thinking about her previous books and the impact they had and still have on me. There are not many authors I can say that about.
My favourite titles to date in order are:
1) “His & Hers” (2020)
2) “I Know Who You Are” (2019)
3) “Rock Paper Scissors” (2021)
I am yet to read “Sometimes I Lie” (2017) but knowing it is recommended by a lot of readers out there, I am sure it will shake up my above list.
Rock, Paper, Scissors, is definitely my least favourite from the ones I have read to date but had it of been my first experience of Feeney and her writing, I am sure I would be singing its praises. I have been spoilt by reading her previous titles first which blew me away each time.
Things I Loved In Rock Paper Scissors:
• Word Of The Day & Word Of The Year – I learnt some new and interesting words.
• Rock Paper Scissor – The way they used this game to make decisions was both brilliant and scary.
• Secret Anniversary Written Letters – These were so brutally honest. I loved every word.
• The Traditional Gift – I loved the way the characters purchased each other a meaningful gift that related to the traditional year.
My Favourite Quote From Rock Paper Scissors:
“The woman wore her bitterness like a badge; the kind of person who writes one-star book reviews” – Pretty sure this is an epic way to call out all the 1 star (nothings ever good enough) reviewers in the world! Bravo Feeney!
I did find “Rock, Paper, Scissors” to be slow and drawn out from about 30% of the way in until the 70% mark. At this point the pace picked back up and the twists just kept coming. However, the big twist, I really did not see coming! This was both refreshing and exhilarating, and the main reason for my overall rating of this title.
In August 2022, Feeney will release a new title called “Daisy Darker” – something about this title and the way Alice Feeney talks about it, makes me feel this will be her most outstanding yet! I cannot wait!!
4 Stars – Recommended Read!
Publication Date: 19th August 2021
Thank you to #NetGalley, #HQ and #AliceFeeney for an ARC of #RockPaperScissors in exchange for an honest review.
Oh my days how I love Alice Feeney and anything she writes! One of my favourite authors, I loved this one too, quick paced and punchy it was sheer brilliance! Thank you so Much!
An intriguing gripping book about a married couple who go away for an anniversary weekend. Lots of twists and turns and couldn’t put it down!
I loved this fast paced thriller.
I read a lot of thrillers abs have become used to guessing the twist or ending. This one had me guessing the whole way.
The different points of view meant we were presented with fully developed characters. I liked the addition of the letters on anniversaries - it was almost like an eerie, manipulative version of P.S I Love You!
The setting was perfect for the story. Who wouldn’t love a converted chapel in a thriller? The isolation of the building added to eeriness and made it even more thrilling.
Thank you to Netgalley and HQ for the arc of Alice Feeney's Rock Paper Scissors.
5 stars- this follows husband and wife Mr and Mrs Wright- Adam and Amelia who end up winning a weekend away to glorious Scotland. They think it may be what their marriage needs to help them.. Adam is blind so they end up giving anniversary gifts which are traditional cotton etc etc.. she always writes him a letter each year in which she wont let him read.. until now 10 years of marriage, 10 years of secrets who is lying and who doesnt want their marriage to survive.. as they didnt randomly win this weekend away.. so what is really going on?!
recommend to all- well written, gripping and hooking right to the very end.
Another cracker from Alice Feeney. I really like the way she writes: different povs and timelines which give great insight into the background. Adam and Amelia have accepted a prize of a weekend away in Scotland with both of them having their secrets and ulterior motives. Once they get snowed in, the tension ratchets up and we are introduced to the strange woman who occupies the rundown cottage closest to them. I don’t want to give anything away but there is a genuine WTF moment which I didn’t see coming and I thoroughly appreciated the writing skill to keep the reveal undercover.
Another addictive and gripping page turner by Alice Feeney. Told from the perspectives of a married couple who have gone to Scotland to celebrate their anniversary and to try and fix the cracks that are appearing in their relationship. This is a domestic suspense thriller that had me totally immersed, it is fast-moving with twists and turns that keep you on the edge of your seat. A fabulous read.
A dark jaw dropping thriller!
Rock Paper Scissors follows Adam and Amelia Wright as they travel to Scotland for an Anniversary weekend away in a last attempt to save their marriage. Workaholic screenwriter Adam has lived with face blindness his whole life, he doesn’t recognise his own friends or family – or even his wife. They both know this weekend will make on break their marriage, but it isn’t a coincidence they randomly won this trip! One of them is lying, and someone doesn’t want them to live happily ever after.
Ten years of marriage. Ten years of secrets. And an anniversary they will never forget.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book! The suspense makes this an utterly addictive read. Feeney’s writing is so clever - I loved how the chapters split between the perspectives of Adam and Amelia and how a hint would be dropped in one chapter but then portrayed differently in the next. I didn’t know who to believe, the story kept me continuously guessing and had plenty of clever twists. I highly recommend this one – particularly if you enjoy a thriller!
Brilliant atmospheric thriller with Feeny's usual stand-out twists.
A great read for a wintery night.
Creeepy, kinda scary book but I absolutely devoured it. So many twists and turns I didn’t see coming.
If you’re looking for a spooky, eerie thriller then this book won’t disappoint !!
Adam & Amelia have won a weekend away in the Scottish highlands. Their marriage is going through a bit of a rough patch so this could be just what they need. But both of them have secrets and both of them have told lies - can their marriage be saved ?!?
This is such a great thriller with a definite spooky edge. The writing is so good you will feel that you are in the chapel with the couple. Plenty of suspense will keep you on the edge of your seat whilst reading !!
Thank you to HQ and NetGalley for a digital copy of this book.
I was really excited to read an ARC of this title, having read Feeney in the past and really admired the work.
I found the book to be equally as page-turner as ever, however, for very different reasons. Usually, the plots steer the desire to continue reading into the night. This time around, the easy writing style and letter/episode format made for swift, easy reading. This book would suit commuters or someone wanting a quick holiday read.
Overall, it's not a favourite of mine. I felt there were a few unanswered questions at the end and the climax and ending was too rushed and too easy for all the set-up that took place. I wasn't a fan of the setting and feel that some characters served no real purpose other than to be red herrings very early on.
The book is suitable for teens+ that like a little drama and mystery. There are a few short-lived, intense moments but nothing that's going to give the heart a big jolt.
As a result, it only scores a 3/5 stars from me.
Gripping and full of twists and turns. In Rock, Paper, Scissors nothing is as it seems a Enjoyable but ultimately I didn’t want to any of the characters so didn’t really support them or care about them. Loved the few little extra twists right a the end though
I’d like to thank NetGalley and HQ for approving me for an ARC of this exceptional book!
Where do I begin? This was a knock me sideways and leave me gobsmacked read. Forget everything you think you know about Amelia and Adam’s marriage because this has twist after twist that you won’t see coming.
The story is told in alternating POV from Adam and Amelia. It is clear from the start that their marriage is in trouble and this weekend away is their last chance before the dreaded ‘d’ word. Both characters are obviously hiding something from each other and as the story unfolds I’m not entirely sure who I trusted more.
I really enjoyed the anniversary letters that were sprinkled throughout the book. It was a good way to update the reader in all that had happened in the marriage each year and I loved the gifts they chose for each other. My husband and I try to but the traditional gifts and it is amazing what you can find out there. As the story progresses we get a third POV, Robin. I found her chapters were interesting and wondered how she fitted into all of it. Don’t worry you do find out and it is a good one!
Set in a creepy chapel in a run down village these psychological thriller is haunting and addictive. I honestly can’t say much about the plot without dropping major spoils so trust me when I say you need to read/listen to this book. Alice Feeney is the master of manipulation and will have you second guessing everything until the last sentence.
I wouldn’t say that I was hooked from the beginning with this book but once I did get into it I liked it so much I wanted to read it all again.
I’m new to Alice Feeney’s books but read Sometimes I Lie which I couldn’t put down. This gripped me from about 60% in. The character of Robin was a complex one but when you understood what she’d been though I felt empathy for her. I felt that Adam was weak and easily led and Amelia was not what she seemed to me.
A terrific twist at the end which I always love.
Thank you to Netgalley and HQ for the opportunity to read an advance copy in return for my honest review.
Alice Feeney has done it again! She is a brilliant must-read author. In Rock Paper Scissors, a couple on a remote getaway for their ten year anniversary begins to questions whether they really know the one they married. Prepare for a twisty ride. Feeney sure knows how to ramp up the suspense. Highly recommended!!
Well what a twisty turney tale this was!
I've been meaning to read an Alice Feeney novel for the longest time and now I finally have, I must read the rest.
Set in the Scottish Highlands ( a winner for me, obvs!) the author set the isolated eerie scene fantastically well, and the chapel where Adam and Amelia were holed up was one scary mother fecker! This was a part of Scotland I certainly didn't want to visit, ta very much!
Sometimes I take a wee while to get myself 'into' a book but that wasn't the case here, Feeney eases you in, gets a hold of you and doesn't let go until the very last line. I loved that about it and I can now see and appreciate why everyone raves about RPS!
And just when you think you've got it sussed; in she swoops like the wind and changes direction completely. Very clever.
So I'd say, yep, it's worth the hype! Loved it!
What a book! Who can you trust.. I have read Alice Feeneys books previously and this is as good as her other ones. She has a way of writing that gets you hooked and you want to keep going. In saying that it did take me a couple of chapters to get into it but I'm so glad I stuck with it. Plenty of mystery, twists and turns. When you think you have figured it out more happens. Great characters and storyline. Here's the recap from the author as I don't like spoilers!
Ten years of marriage.
Ten years of secrets.
An anniversary they’ll never forget.
Adam and Amelia are spending the weekend in the Scottish Highlands. The remote location is perfect for what they have planned.
But when their romantic trip takes a dark turn, they both start to wonder – can they trust the one they’re with?
Because every couple tells little white lies. Only for Adam and Amelia, the truth is far more dangerous.
Thank you to netgalley and the publishers for an ARC in exchange for an honest opinion
I love Alice Feeney's books, and this one did not disappoint. Dark, deep and ever so twisty, this one kept me up reading late into the night. A couple with a trying marriage, alternating chapters with different points of view, and a style which you can't put down - crafted perfection.
