So this premise isn’t that original. Werewolves and true mates and stuff that’s pretty par for the course with werewolf books: the main character is a black witch but she doesn’t know she’s a witch. I’m surprised she doesn’t because it’s really bloody obvious that her grandma is one but sure.
She has this boyfriend who she cares about but doesn’t want to say she loves, which like fair you’re not there yet but considering she decides to move a few hours away she does seem to be stringing him along a bit.
Anyways, she goes for one whole run in her grandmas old town and somehow a bunch of werewolves find her and realise she is their alphas mate. Said alpha then decided to touch her soul mark to activate them being soulmates without her consent.
I was amused by the back and forth of him suffering the consequences of his actions because she’s not interested and has to keep setting boundaries, I think I would have preferred if she didn’t have a boyfriend simply because her whole reason half the time seems to only be him but she’s not that invested. Also you can’t really reject a mate apparently they go insane so she’s gotta hang around him I guess.
Not a whole lot happens in this book other than her setting boundaries and him ignoring them, then her being angry at him (understandable) for not having more self restraint than a toddler, and then him saying sorry then doing it again because again…toddler.
Randomly out of nowhere 65% in her resolve crumples and she gets down and dirty with werewolf boy in her kitchen. She’s got a boyfriend. I tapped out. I don’t like cheating and the kissing that he kinda forced on her was already bad enough but outright cheating nope.
I found this audiobook very hard to listen to, the narrator’s voice was not very engaging and was quite grating at times sounding almost electronic. This meant that I found the story hard to listen to. The plot whilst sounding interesting was let down inconsistencies. Things are not dealt with or explained and I struggled with the elements of control and violence that seem to just be accepted. I did not enjoy this.
Thank you to the publishers for providing me with a review copy of this audiobook
Unfortunately I will not be reviewing this in full as I did DNF this for now. I just didn't like the narrator's voice (sorry just my opinion) however, I felt the plot was good and going somewhere. I'm just sad I couldn't finish it
I tried really hard with this book but it was not great. The narrator had a very monotonous voice which only had some life in it occasionally! This did not help the characters in the book or the story itself!!. So I'm really sorry but it was not for me at all!
Thanks to Netgalley for the free ARC book for an honest review.
On paper this should have been everything that I love in an audio book, and don't get me wrong I did enjoy it and I did want to know what happens next. I was just a little disappointed that there wasn't more focus on the uncovering of the supernatural element.
One minute it was a normal story, then "bang", we are in a supernatural story- there wasn't much growth or development of that side of the tale. It was like flicking a light switch, there was no build up.
As I said I still enjoyed the story, but I felt it could have been so much more.
The narration was good, and easy to listen to and engaging.
🔊 AUDIOBOOK REVIEW 🔊
I really enjoyed this audio book, probably because I am obsessed with paranormal and supernatural themes.
It wasn't what I expected and I found the narration to be quite slow as was the story to be honest, but all in all it was a really enjoyable read/listen.
I didnt really bond with the characters though, they where very bitter and just grated on me. I am all for a bit of banter etc, but the lead female Zoe was very full on angsty throughout.
That being said I will probably read/ listen to the rest of the series given the opportunity. As I love Werewolves/shifter stories and I am kind of hoping Zoelle isn't such an awful character or its a different lead.
Unfortunately the narration for the book is so bad that it ruined the story for me. The narrator has a slightly nasal, annoying voice, buts it’s the over exaggerated and yet at times weirdly stilted intonation that I really struggled with. I found I was so focused on this odd intonation that I couldn’t really focus on the story itself. Trying to put the awful narration to one side, I think I would otherwise have really enjoyed the book as the plot is engaging, with a range of interesting characters. The narrator makes the heroine come across as whiny, but I think I’d probably feel differently if I read the ebook version.
Coven by Rebecca Main.
Soulmark series.
I listened to an audiobook of this it was good. The chapters were long apart from that I really enjoyed it. I liked Zoel character. I'm looking forward to the next book. 5*.
I did not enjoy this book. I will apologise throughout this review for this. It just wasn't my cup of tea at all.
I didn't like the narrator.
I didn't like the aggressive sexual behaviour from Xander.
I didn't like that he insisted Zoelle say he owned her.
I did like Zoelle and her grandmother and her coven.
Was this aimed at teens - because this was a terrible relationship for teens.
Basically if you liked Charlaine Harris, Stephanie Meyer and EL James then you'll enjoy this.
Zoelle finishes university, ready to move back in with the grandmother who raised her after her parents and sister were killed when she was 10. But when she gets back Zoelle finds grandmother packed and ready to move back to her hometown for reasons granny keeps secret.
Shock - granny is a witch and belongs to a coven. Double shock - Zoelle is one too and so was her mother and sister!
Upon arriving at the new house, Zoelle is warned not to go out after dark especially not when it's a full moon - why?
Werewolves is why!
They're everywhere.
So naturally Zoelle and the alpha werewolf get into an obsessive relationship that no-one can break up. They're destined to be together! But they know they shouldn't *eye rolling*
I did pick the book thinking it would be a bit of light horror, a bit of an amuse-bouche from all the heavy thrillers I've got on the go, but boy-o-boy I was not expecting this.
It's trashy, and probably someone will love it, I'm sure lots will love it actually. But if you want something a little meatier, I should bother.
I don't enjoy slating anyone's book at all, but I can't not like it.
The most memorable part of the book was when Zoelle exclaimed "...but it won't fit" made me actually close my eyes and give my head a little shake (just like the gif)
