This was my first by this author, and sadly, I wasn't hooked nor entertained by the tale. The characters went a little beyond flawed to being irritating and not likeable, making it hard to root for them. The writing itself felt jumpy and lacked smooth flow, the POV stilted in many instances. Wasn't my cup of tea, unfortunately
This was my first time reading a book from the author but I am delighted to say I thoroughly enjoyed the story and I look forward to reading more books from the writer in the future
I really like the authors style of writing and also how she writes characters. The premise was interesting
A good family drama
I must firstly apologise for the amount of time it has taken me to provide a review of this book, my health was rather bad for quite some time, something that had me in hospital on numerous occasions and simply didnt leave me with the time I once had to do what I love most.
Unfortunately that does mean I have missed the archive date for many of these books, so It would feel unjust throwing any review together without being able to pay attention to each novel properly.
However, I am now back to reading as before and look forward to sharing my honest reviews as always going forward. I thank you f0r the patience and understanding throughout x
Loved this book!!!
It was something different to what I read but I enjoyed the change... Looking forward to read more of this author.
Thank You to NetGalley and Hodder & Stoughton for this ARC!!
Unfortunately this was a DNF for me at 30%. After initially being drawn in and excited about the book I found it to be slow going. I also found it very hard to like the characters. I have seen a lot of love for this book but unfortunately this wasn't for me.
A really enjoyable light read. First time I have read a book by this author and I will certainly been reading more. Loved, loved loved it!!!
Thanks to netgalley for the chance to read this book.
Didn’t really enjoy this book. Some parts were good but thought the majority of the book was very cliched and forced.
I really enjoyed this book from Elin - another classic beach read that allowed me to escape. I appreciated the character development and the unique approach to storytelling (the reflections on her last life/etc). Big fan!
A wonderful book, I really enjoyed Golden Girl it was beautifully written and I want more just like Vivian I want to know what happens next
I am surprised that I loved this book as much as I did. It is not type of the book I read but it was the right time and right place. After months of not reading anything I picked this one without looking blurb and I loved the whole premise , I liked all the characters , they where more realistic than most book as they flawed but very likable. Elin Hilderbrand is new author that I am adding to my long list.
Elin Hildebrand had me hooked from page one.
This is the first book that I have read by this author, and now I understand why everyone has been telling me ‘You have to read her!’ The blurb doesn’t do this book justice. I am glad that I didn’t reread it before I started. I probably would have nudged this read further down the pile.
Elin Hildebrand not only entranced me, she amazed me with Golden Girl. I was expecting a fairly predictable family drama/romance/paranormal tale, but there is nothing predictable about Golden Girl. The wonderful characters and plotting made sure of that! From the first page I felt like I had stepped right into this novel and was right there amidst the action and drama.
The story is told from multiple points of view, mainly in the present, but with forays into Vivi’s past. And what a past she had! I loved her character. She has dignity and fortitude.
I became totally invested in this family, and I shed a tear or two at Vivi’s death, and again while reading Savannah’s amazing tribute to her best friend.
I love sandwiches. I could live on sandwiches, and there’s some delicious ones described in here. I have bookmarked them and intend to eat my way through them.
Make sure that you read the author’s note at the end. It explains a lot. Elin Hildebrand is definitely an author whose backtitles will be finding a place on my shelves right beside Golden Girl.
Lovely unusual take on the afterlife that I really enjoyed. Good book with lovely characters and plenty of fun and good unique storyline but I loved the concept of the book making it perfect easy reading for the beach
Great book, interesting take on death and the afterlife. Made me think about what happens when you die. Really enjoyed and would recommend
As always, Elin Hildebrand pulls it out the bag and transported me to the hearts of Nantucket.
I loved it, Elin Hildebrand never disappoints for me!
A perfect holiday read, Although it is slightly predictable in parts, this book will definitely bring a smile to your face. It is a well written book, and the characters are all likeable. This book is like a warm hug and I recommend it.
The best thing about this novel was the unusual and good idea, although at times the waiting-for-heaven part felt a bit twee. I thought it was a real shame that the culprit was signposted so obviously - it would have been a much better twist if we had not had that handed to us so early.
Apart from that, I found it an enjoyable story and it was certainly very evocative of a place that the author knows well.
I haven’t read many books from Ealing Hildebrand only the Winter Street trilogy which warmed my heart over the Christmas period so was delighted to receive this from NetGalley. This book was an epic saga that revolved around the famous novelist Vivian Howe and her children’s lives. Vivian or Vivi as she’s known is a world famous author living on Nantucket and she has three children. I don’t think it’s a spoiler to say that Vivi has died and we are seeing her life from the beyond as well as into the future. The book twists and weaves its way through Vivian‘s life and through her children’s lives. It is most definitely an epic story and I’m sure it has a lot of echoes to the authors own life as a writer on Nantucket. It is an extremely enjoyable read from beginning to end even though I did find the last few chapters a little rushed. I thoroughly recommend this book to anyone who likes to get their teeth stuck into a fantastic read.
A different kind of story with dialogue from above. What would we change of we could? Great characters and a mystery to solve, tho it was evident early on who done it.
I have read quite a few books by Elin Hilderbrand so when Netgalley gave me the opportunity to read her new one I was very pleased.
Based in the usual place of Nantucket. (I so want to go there!) Introducing new characters on the island. Don’t want to ruin the plot so won’t say too much about the story. But if you want to escape for a while you can’t go wrong with this story.
I loved it.
