I really enjoy the rebel girl series. The illustrations, font, design as well as their choices on which people to focus on are brilliant
A fantastic anthology of the stories of leading minority ladies (both past and present) from around the globe astound with their stories of overcoming hardship and breaking barriers. Academics, activists, architects, artists, athletes and more grace these one-page biographies. A great book jam-packed with role models for young girls to aspire to be like. This book would be a great addition to any person, classroom, and/or school library.
4 Stars (I received an e-arc from Net Galley in exchange for an honest review)
This was a great addition to the rebel girls series though it still does heavily features American girls, though at least there is a mix of other ethnicities. We also get some representation for the LGBT community. The illustrations are a mix of different illustrators, some of them being amazingly gorgeous and some are very simple. But I did love the variety of different professions and I discovered that one of the women is actually on the $10 bill here in Canada. A feature that was interesting is that at the end of the book it lists all the black women that were featured in other volumes in the series.
I just reviewed Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls: 100 Real-Life Tales of Black Girl Magic by Lilly Workneh, Jestine Ware, Diana Odero, Sonja Thomas, CaShawn Thompson (Foreword). #RebelGirlsCelebrateBlackGirlMagic #NetGalley
Really enjoyed this book. It was well written
Part of me wishes I had a daughter/niece who I could share these books with as each one they release are amazing and it gives the children role models from all walks and areas of life and shows girls that no matter what happens you can achieve anything and that it's a good thing that girls can have both beauty and brains and more often our world is always highly shadowed by males who achieve greatness rather than the females. We are also coming into a new generation where women of color who were often shunned or placed in the background are also being acknowledged along with their white female counterparts which I love as that is the way it should be, it should never be about the color of their skin but what they have achieved. Black Girl Magic is laid out in the same format as the other books in this series where each tale is given a double spread of one page per story and a full-color picture of the person. The other thing I loved about this book and the others is that they feature not only famous ones that we all know of like Toni Morrison and Aretha Franklin but also unknowns like Marsai Martin and Shirley Chisholm. The other thing I enjoy is that the book is also a mixture of older black women we know of like Katherine Johnson and Serena/Venus Williams but also newcomers onto the scene like VP Kamala Harris and Poet Amanda Gorman who delivered Joe Biden's inauguration with a poem. This series is perfect for girls of all ages especially those between 9-15 years and also grab it now if you need a last-minute Christmas present or a birthday gift.
The illustrations in this book are wonderful. Reading this with children is a fun experience and opens up topics of conversation about the various women highlighted in the book. It is also amazing to show the little girls out there they can do anything no matter what. These books are great for young girls.
I wish i had a book like this when i was a child and i am so grateful my daughter will have access to wonderful, inspiring stories of women who look like her. The stories were inspiring and i learned about many women i never knew existed until i read about them in this book. I liked that this book also encompassed afrolatinas which is another underrepresented group within the black community. My daughter and i will dive deeper into the lives of some of the women who connected with the most. I am excited for what we will discover, from the spark that book has ignited.

Love it!! I had the first volume at home, I received it as a Christmas present. I'm an adult and I am still like receiving books like this. Because I like the illustrations and the empowering stories like that. The first volume is about awesome women stories mostly in the past. But this edition is more recent stories. I would like to give this book to any kids as Christmas present.
Everything about this book is inspiring and crucial in today's world. These stories are about women and girls who are changing the world, and their stories are often not told. Here's to the beautiful, strong black girls that are rising up!
I had already read some of the 'rebel' books so when I was this book was available on Netgalley, I knew I had to give it a try. I just love the style of these books. The illustrations are stunning and you end up feeling so inspired after reading. 10 out of 10 from me.
I'm so thankful for books that highlight the beauty of Black voices and experiences especially girls and women.
As with all the rebel books series, that one was beautiful!
This is one of those books you should have in your home. I love a good reference book that is detailed without being overly boring or drawn out. What I love even more about this one are the illustrations, so you have a face to the achievements. I think that is important and it is something that is missing when looking for information.
I enjoyed this book very much and highly recommend it.
Bright and colorful, this collection of biographies for 100 famous and not-so-famous Black women is a must-buy for any elementary and middle school library. Each page contains a beautiful full-color illustration next to one-page biography of a famous Black woman who changed history. This inspiring book will both teach and encourage girls to live up to their full potential and persevere in the face of adversity. Each page is not only informative, but the illustrations are a joy to look at, and the text can be read quickly, which will keep readers wanting to turn the page and learn about someone new. Part of the Rebel Girls series that has inspired young girls to stand up and stand out, this addition is perfect to add to the collection.
A life-changing and powerful read, not only for the young and the teens, but for everyone.
You can go for this book blindly. One page description, another page with colourful portraits of the amazing women.
Need more? Just go read the other books in the rebel girls book series!
Thoroughly impressed!
Thank you, publisher and the artists/authors and the team, for the advance reading copy.
This is another great book in an amazing series. I will be purchasing a copy for my classroom library. I love the opportunity for my students to read real life stories about women who have shaped out world and generally get very little credit for it.
Absolutely inspiring and an exemplary job on showcasing the accomplishments and achievements of Black women around the world! A must read for anyone in my opinion as this book highlights important Black scientists, athletes, and more!
This is a very important and inspirational book which provides a short but informative summary of a wide diversity of inspirational women.
Rebel Girls has done it again! This time giving light to a group that is one of the most overlooked in history, black women. Always well researched and beautifully illustrated, I loved adding to my knowledge of female greats.
A must pickup for everyone.
I love the Rebel Girls movement and this book is amazing. I would personally use it at school but it would be lovely for a child or family to have at home too.
Every biography is beautifully illustrated by different illustrators so there is a huge variety of artistic styles to enjoy. The profiles chosen cover a huge variety of modern and historic women, whose inspiring stories take place in the worlds of the arts, sport, activism, STEM, medicine, politics, conservation.... and more!
Important stories made accessible to all.
Thanks so much to NetGalley and the publishers for letting me read a digital ARC in exchange for my honest feedback.
