Murders never happen in Marlow, do they?
This was charming cosy crime mystery, full of quirky, witty heroines and clever, cantankerous bad guys. The book really delivered on the intricacies of the crime itself, which I can’t describe here without spoilers, you’ll just have to trust me that it’s very much worth it! There’s plenty for eagle-eyed crime readers to unpick and many suspects to accuse. Though the pace slowed a little at times for me, this read is sure to delight cosy readers and is spot on for fans of the genre and The Thursday Murder Club series. The narrator, Nicolette McKenzie, brought each character to life and made the story thoroughly engaging.
Huge thanks to the author, Robert Thorogood, and publisher, HarperCollins, for this review copy. Views my own. 4*
This story grabs your immediate attention. Judith is a remarkable woman. Eccentric, independent and intelligent, she is the perfect advert for the older person, and it's no surprise when she witnesses a murder; she wants to find out who committed it and why?
This tale has a good balance of amateur sleuth and professional policing, and the reader can imagine how it will develop as the series progresses. The other constituents of the Marlow club are equally enigmatic, although more contemporary than Judith. This story sees a believable team dynamic evolve between unlikely allies and shows positive character development in all of the women. There are insights into these women's lives which are relatable and immerse the reader in the story. The multilayered plot keeps the reader engaged. It is solvable, like Judith's clues for crosswords.
The narrator brings the characters to life, and this story works well as an audiobook.
It is an enjoyable listen, humorous, poignant and satirical, with memorable characters. I look forward to more books in this series. #deathcomestomarlow publishes #January2023
I received a copy of this audiobook from the publisher.
I have already read and reviewed the ebook version of this book and posted the eBook review on GoodReads and Amazon UK.
There is a new detective in the area for fans of cosy crime to adore.
During my hospital stay, I was excited to listen to The Marlow Murder Club by Robert Thorogood. With crisp considered narration by Nicolette McKenzie suited to the books style, I was entertained and thrilled for hours.
The first chapter introducing the sleuth to be Judith Potts is fantastic and drew me in safe in the knowledge I'd love the book. It's everything I'd have hoped for from the writer of Death in Paradise. Eccentric and unique, Judith is a character to adore and admire as she joins forces with Suzie, a dog walker and Becks, a vicar's wife to solve the crimes ignored by the police.
The story, characters and writing was immersive, with gentle humour throughout. It's a series I'd love to follow
Perfect for fans of cozy crime such as Richard Osman's The Thursday Murder Club and Julia Chapman's Dale Detective Agency series.
