Thank you Joffre Books for sharing a copy of Hairpin Bridge by Taylor Adams for me to review.
I have no comment on this one except it was all action and nothing else for me. I didn’t love the author’s attitude towards women that felt to me to come across the page but maybe I was just being sensitive that day.
I adored No Exit and couldn't wait to dive into Hairpin Bridge. Unfortunately, I did not love it and I don't think it matched the magnificence of Adams first book.
The beginning of the book immediately grasped me - the car chase was tense and stressful. Then a twist happened that I think happened a little to early and then made the whole middle section feel redundant, slow and kind of boring. At parts I thought Lena was an unreliable narrator, some parts Cambry, some parts Raycevic. I was dying to know what happened to Lena and Cambry but found myself skimming to get to some revelations. The twists weren't as exciting and the end got a little wild in there that I was confused as to what was real and what wasn't, and not in a good way. I thought it ended too abruptly and although I liked the ending, I felt it didn't get the wrap up it deserved.
Overall, this is a good read for folx who like thrillers with severe unreliability and like to be kept guessing throughout the entire book.
This book was tough to read - I love a good thriller, and was so hooked by the start of this book, but unfortunately it then went all over the place and had too many improbable plot points for it to be taken seriously.
Along with the fact that the plot points were improbable, they were also very repetitive and by the end, I was tired of it. The overall premise of this book is SO good and creepy, but unfortunately the execution just didn't work for me as a reader.
Rating: 2.5
This is the second book I've read by this author and will probably be the last. I think this author's books just aren't for me. They're fast-paced and "entertaining" but I need more from a thriller. Nothing shocking happened. Maybe if you like reading slashers, you'd like this.
“It starts with a bridge.” Hairpin Bridge by Taylor Adams
3 stars. This was interesting. And my first time reading anything from this author.
Lena is on a mission to find the person who killed her twin sister, Cambry. Official reports say she jumped off Hairpin Bridge to kill herself. And Lena doesn’t accept that. When she meets the policeman who was last to see her sister alive, things get more complicated.
I really liked how you don’t know if Rick was telling the truth or not. At one point, I was doubting Lena. Actually, throughout the whole book, I didn’t connect with Lena. It was easy for me to doubt her. So half a star down because of that.
I enjoyed the mystery, and the revelations and thinking if Lena will survive or not, if she really knew her sister, if Rick was lying or not. Was sooo curious about that. But it was hard to get through the book when you don’t like the main character. Sad sigh.
Thank you Joffre Books and NetGalley for the arc of this book.
I absolutely loved No Exit, so when I saw this as a Read Now selection, I had to grab it. Trigger warnings to consider: suicide, murder, death, graphic gory scenes, wildfires.
It was very fast paced and surprisingly suspenseful considering most of the story takes place on a bridge along a closed down route. Told through past and present storylines, we catch glimpses into Chambry's death and her twin sister's mission to figure out what really happened, because Chambry would never commit suicide.
I really enjoyed how Lena was trying to piece together what really happened with Chambry. Throughout the story, there were continuous changes, obstacles, and twists and turns. Adams has a way of leaving you guessing until the very end. Just when you think you have it all figured out, the story takes a complete 180. Definitely graphic and gory, not for the slight of stomach just as Adams did with No Exit. Don't expect a story with twists and turns without the gory details.
The only reason for 4 stars was because the dialogue between Lena and Ray, on the bridge felt very repetitive and drawn out at parts, making the story a little bit longer than it needed to be.
Thank you @williammorrowbooks @netgalley for ARC of The Hairpin Bridge. This was a great fast paced thriller as Lena tries to find out what happened to Cambridge and what led to her death.
I did not want to put this down and really wanted to know what happened with Cambry. I did find it confusing with Cambry’s story as it is suppose to be told from Lena and what she learned about her sister during her time on the road. I loved how badass Lena was and how prepared she was for this mission.
Hairpin Bridge follows Lena whose twin sister, Cambry, recently died of an apparent suicide. While she didn't know her sister all that well, Lena cannot accept this explanation and travels to the site of the accident to find out what really happened. She comes into contact with state trooper Corporal Reycevic who not only pulled Cambry over just hours before she died but also found her body. What follows is a cat-and-mouse game as Lena tried to figure what really happened to her sister that day and what secrets she was holding.
While this story was action packed, the chase got exhausting after a while. I felt this way with No Exit as well so I think this just isn't the type of book for me. It definitely reads like an action movie but I dont enjoy reading it as much as I would watching it. The switching of POVs also got pretty confusing and sometimes it wasn't clear whose head we were in until you got the context clues. Some of the revelations and scenes were pretty eye roll inducing so you need to suspend your disbelief.
If you are looking for a non-stop action type of book this might be for you but unfortunately it just wasn't what I was looking for.
* I received an eARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review *
This book was incredibly fast paced and had some good surprise twists. Again, like No Exit, by Taylor Adams, I liked the short time frame the book took place in and the nonstop action scenes in parts.
Interesting storyline and the twists kept it from being too predictable. A fast paced read that I couldn’t put down!
This book reads like a late-night TV movie. Tons of drama and twists. It definitely asks you to accept a lot of coincidences. It’s not my favorite thriller, but it’s nowhere near the worst. I really enjoyed the No Exit by the same author which is why I chose to read this one. Overall I don’t regret reading Hairpin Bridge.
How does one write a thriller right after one of the most amazing thrillers of all time? No Exit is still to this day my favorite and most recommended book so it was no surprise that I was excited to hear that the author had another story in him. Unfortunately, this was just a three-star read for me. I wasn't a fan of the sister's relationship and I felt like the short amount of time this book had was not working. It felt like the story got very repetitive and it got to the point where I no longer cared who or why someone did what they did. Also, I felt like know who it was very early on was not how I would have gone. In No Exit, you literally didn't know who to trust but in Hairpin Bridge, you know from the start and try to figure out why.
Will I continue to read and support this author? Yes, 100% but unfortunately No Exit just set a high standard and I'm afraid nothing will top it.
This one is a big ole nope from me. I’m so torn on this author. On one hand he writes books that unfold in front of you like a movie. On the other hand, if I was watching said movie I would roll my eyes and sigh out a big “yeah ooook” over and over.
I didn’t love No Exit - I enjoyed the read but didn’t love it. This one I’m not even sure I enjoyed the read.
I didn’t buy what he was selling. Too long, too slow and more holes than a cheese grater (that’s a saying right?)
And don’t even get me started on the name Plastic Man.
Do you ever have a feeling about what you’re going to end up rating a book right from the start?
I knew right away this would be a three star....BUT the more I sat with it and angrily stewed about it...2.5⭐️ it is.
I really enjoyed No Exit and Harpin Bridge did not disappoint either. There is a lot happening at all times and because of that, I had to take breaks after a couple chapters.
Another #netgalleyarc #hairpinbridge #tayloradams #joffebooks Twins. Lena and Cambry. Both adults. One a wanderer. The other works. Blogs. When one sister completes suicide the other is determined to find the truth. She knows her sister would never. There’s only one person. One way to find the truth. But. Sometimes the truth isn’t exactly what you thought it would be. What happened to Cambry? #bookstagram #readersofinstagram #bookreview #bookrecommendations #readersgonnaread #netgalleyreviewer
Lena's sister Cambry jumped off a bridge three months ago, ending her life in a terrible death. This is what the police told her, but Lena doesn't believe it. She is determined to figure out what really happened to Cambry, so she goes back to Hairpin Bridge, ready to confront Corporal Raymond Raycevic, who she believes lied about what actually happened on the night of Cambry's death.
This was my first Taylor Adams book, and I was a bit nervous to read it after seeing a lot of reviews appear on Instagram. I am super happy to say that I really, really loved this book! I devoured it in just a few sittings, and I couldn't guess what the outcome of the story was going to be. I love thrillers because of the untrustworthy and often unreliable narrators that can be found in the genre; I was curious and deeply intrigued the entire time I was reading this because I could not figure out who trust. I wasn't sure how I would feel about the isolated setting--being on the bridge for almost the entirety of the story, but I really thought it worked, especially with the shifts in the timeline and point of view. Hairpin Bridge was a really fun and intense thriller, and I want to pick up No Exit as soon as possible now!
Trigger warning for loss of loved one, graphic violence, murder.
A huge thank you to NetGalley and Joffe Books for the ARC of Hairpin Bridge by Taylor Adams!
This is my fourth Taylor Adams book and I thoroughly enjoy every book that comes out, I was so excited when Hairpin Bridge was revealed.
Lena Nguyen doesn’t believe her twin sister committed suicide by jumping off ‘Hairpin Bridge’. She is on a mission to find answers as she believes her sister Cambry was murdered afterall she was on a year-long road trip, Lena doesn’t buy into this and is out to seek revenge.
Hairpin Bridge by Taylor Adams is dark, engrossing and takes you on a total edge of your seat feeling in this psychological thriller. The storyline and setting will keep you engrossed, twists and turns that make you hold your breath, it is a totally dark and thrilling book that I really enjoyed and would thoroughly recommend.
Very well written, amazing storytelling in the book which doesn’t linger for too long, Hairpin Bridge will keep you thinking and figuring, as a visual reader I always get myself immersed in books and this one did not disappoint.
Many thanks to NetGalley, Joffe and Taylor Adams for my ARC of this book!!
Hairpin Bridge is a thrilling and pretty quick read similar to his last book No Exit. It starts off at high intensity and then just keeps the adrenaline high the entire journey..
The story follows Lena who is out to investigate her twin sister’s supposed suicide. She has her suspicions about the cop involved in her sister’s death and the entire book is about the standoff between the two of them. It is interspersed with Lena’s blog entries and her version of what her sister’s POV would have been but it is mostly just conversation and action between her and the cop.
Despite it being a page turner, I was ready to be done much earlier than expected. It felt repetitive (how many times can you shoot the same man?!) and overdrawn. There were a couple unforeseen twists which I appreciated but it wasn’t enough for me to up the rating.
An estranged sister is searching for answers in her twins death.
I absolutely loved “No Exit” so I had pretty high expectations with this book. I found it to be good but not great.
HAIRPIN BRIDGE had me interested and hooked, within the first few pages! The story jumps right into Lina trying to discover the truth about her twin sister’s death. This book was easy to read and just like Taylor’s other book NO EXIT, this one gives you “this could be a movie” feels too! (Lots of out-there moments included)
However, I didn’t enjoy the switching of/ different POV’s. Between Cambry’s POV, Lina’s POV told as blog entries, and then to Lina’s present POV… I disconnected with the story at times. I felt like certain parts got repetitive and it took some time to wrap up.
Overall, HAIRPIN BRIDGE wasn’t my favorite Taylor Adams book, but I can see why people enjoy this one. It has Taylor’s touch of thrill, action, and wild endings!
Thank you to NetGalley and William Morrow Books for the ARC in exchange for my honest review!
If you're looking for a quick psychological thriller read, "Hairpin Bridge" is for you! This high-paced novel takes place over the span of a few hours and places Lena at the spot of her estranged twin sister's supposed suicide. We start the story with Lena and Officer Raycevic meeting to go over the details of Cambry's suicide, but quickly begin to wonder what really happened. Lena owes it to the sister to find the truth, but can she do so before it's too late?
