WOW!! How can a story set mostly on the same stretch of road be so freaking exciting and explosive?!? Leave it to Taylor Adams! Definitely couldn’t put it down! Just as good as No Exit! Read it! Read it now!!!
Thanks to Netgalley and Joffe Books for an advance copy of this ebook.
Firstly, I'll admit that I wasn't a huge fan of 'No Exit', my first Taylor Adams book but the premise combined with the reviews made it seem like compulsive read. And I'll admit this was a step up.
The first half of the book had me hooked. It seemed it Adams had redeemed himself by creating if not a psychological thriller, an action thriller with better characters than the last time. BUT it didn't last. In the second half, the flaws I found frustrating in 'No Exit' started to show up and I'm really sorry to say that the last quarter was a slog to get through.
My issue was the repetitive action sequences, the dragging storyline simply because everyone just manages to somehow live and the frustrating dialogue.
But if you, like most people, enjoyed 'No Exit' you'll definitely like this book too. It just wasn't my thing.
2.5/5
Hairpin Bridge is a fast-paced, “what’s going to happen next??” type of thriller.
Taylor Adams does a great job of keeping the reader engaged. There are many twists throughout the book that I personally didn’t see coming. Especially at the end. The last page of the last chapter and the epilogue shocked me. How, Taylor Adams, how??
I really enjoyed reading this. It was a different type of thriller than I’m accustomed to. This thriller is action packed and typically I don’t like action packed storylines. This book did a great job of keeping me on my toes and keeping me engaged. I found myself not wanting to put it down.
If you’re considering reading this, make sure to research trigger warnings. I don’t want to give any spoilers, but it’s important you know what you’re getting yourself into before reading this one.
Thank you NetGalley and Joffe Books for the opportunity to read an ARC copy of this book!
Hairpin Bridge is out June 15, 2021!
I wish to thank NetGalley and Joffe Books for the opportunity to read Hairpin Bridge in return for an honest review. I was excited to obtain the ARC, as I had read No Exit by Taylor Adams, which I thought was a brilliant, riveting thriller. In fact, it was one of my favourite suspense stories the year I read it. However, I regret this one was a disappointment for me. I believe many readers will find this a compelling read and enjoy its non-stop action, but it didn't work for me.
Lena has been grieving for her estranged twin sister, Cambry, since she committed suicide by jumping off a bridge. They were estranged, and the introverted Lena had not seen her twin for a long time before her tragic death and didn't know her well. The more outgoing Cambry had some mental health issues, left home, and was on the road, living out of her car and surviving by her wits. Unfortunately, she had a history of involvement with terrible men. Their grief-stricken mother is a very religious woman who believes Cambry is in Hell as punishment for suicide. The story contains gore, with some are described through Lena's nightmares and imagination. There is also violence and implausible action scenes.
Cambry's body was found by a Montana highway patrolman, Corporal Raymond Reycevic. By coincidence, he issued her a speeding ticket an hour before she arrived on the fatal bridge and jumped. His name was mentioned on a vague, cryptic suicide note. Lena refuses to believe that her sister committed suicide and is obsessed with the suspicion that the police officer is involved in her death.
She plans to meet him at the bridge and question him about what he knows, hoping to record a confession for his part in Cambry's death.
Car chases and shoot-outs often add to the intensity and thrills of a book. Unfortunately, I found them repetitive and thought they went on far too long. What should have been gripping and exciting became far-fetched, redundant and boring for me.
There were details I found unnecessary, and the format was confusing. Abrupt transitions from Lena's encounter with Reycevic and Cambry's story containing facts and Lena's speculation and guesses about her sister's thoughts and experiences often came without warning and made the story seem disjointed. There were also selections from Lena's past and future blog, furthering the switches between perspectives. I was unable to invest in the characters on an emotional level, finding none likeable nor sympathetic. A suspension of disbelief was essential as I found the drama too over the top and far-fetched. Many may like how Lena's quiet, withdrawn personality changed her into a forceful, vengeful woman.
There were some good twists, especially the final, which I was expecting. However, I would read the next book by Taylor Adams based on how much I enjoyed No Exit, rather than my disappointment and misgivings with Hairpin Bridge.
I read and loved No Exit by Taylor Adams so was so excited to read his latest, Hairpin Bridge.
This book is about Lena Nguyen, a 24-year-old girl whose twin sister Cambry committed suicide 3 months ago at the location which is also the title of the book, 'Hairpin Bridge'. Lena is convinced that her estranged sister could not have killed herself and thus goes there and meets the cop, Raymond Raycevic, who was the last person to have met and spoken to her. Lena is sure that the cop is the one who actually killed her sister and thus to prove her theory she meets up with him at Hairpin Bridge. And that's when it all goes to hell.
The story is a very quick, pacy tale filled with twists and turns where you can't wait to find out exactly what happened to Cambry.
Told in multiple POVs and timelines the story keeps you guessing right till the end.
I liked the book but did not love it the way I did 'No Exit'. It was entertaining enough but a lot of portions felt repetitive and long drawn.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for sending a digital ARC in exchange for an honest review.
There are certain authors whose books I look forward to every year. Taylor Adams (maybe strangely for people who are not familiar with his writing is one of them). I fell in love with No Exit two years ago and his release this year is almost equally thrilling and captivating.
Hairpin Bridge is about Lena Nguyen who is investigating her sister's alleged suicide on the titular bridge. She thinks there was foul play and she invites Corporal Raymond Raycevic who found her sister to tell her more about it on the isolated location.
What follows is a thrilling and quite suspenseful (for Taylor Adams' standard) back-and-forth between the two characters. No Exit did not tone done the action, and neither does Hairpin Bridge. The action is non-stop. I love reading his novels, but I would love to see them on the big screen as well.
There are elements to the story I didn't find necessary. First of all, the blog posts and other media may have been limited but it took away from the action. Secondly, it may have been a little bit longer than necessary. I would rate this book 4.5 stars, but looking at all other books I read this year I rounded it up to 5 stars.
What I loved about his writing is mainly the knowledge he pours into the pages when he's describing a scene. It's so visceral it's almost like you're there and he's teaching you things about the attributes and tactics. It reminds me a little bit of how <b>Lee Child</b> writes. I've already mentioned the action-packed scenes. I liked the conversations between the main characters. The dynamics are insane and I was on the edge of my seat to find out what would happen next. The fact that it once again takes place on an isolated location is a big plus.
Taylor Adams' latest release is a real ride and I can't wait to see what he comes out with next!
I was supposed to be packing for vacation today but instead I picked this one up and read the whole thing! If you read No Exit, then you know that Taylor Adams stories can’t be walked away from. They are action packed, intense and anxiety producing and you have to keep going to see how it all shakes out in the end. My best advice is to find a day with no responsibility, go in blind, and enjoy the ride! Thank you to Netgalley, Joffe Books, and Taylor Adams for this eARC in exchange for my honest review.! I have not read No Exit by Taylor Adams but after reading this I WANT TO!!
I was so excited to see this new book being released on June 15 2021 because I love a good summer thriller. This book did not disappoint.
This book follows Lena, a blogger that is out to uncover what truly happened to her twin sister Cambry the night she committed (what police say) suicide. Cambry was an outgoing girl with some mental health issues but suicide has never been an issue that had popped up in her past.
To find out what happened that unfortunate night, Lena asks Corporal Raymond Raycevic to take her to the bridge where her sister fell to her death. The officer from the beginning seems a bit put off by the whole thing when Lena starts asking a lot of questions of him, mainly because he was the last one to see her alive when he gave her a speeding ticket an hour before she 'committed suicide'.
Why did Cambry call the police 16 times before she committed suicide?!
I will have to admit the story did seems a bit slow at first. I wasn't connecting to what was so thrilling about this one...but just wait for iiiit!
The book goes to 100MPH real quick and you can't put it down.
I literally was late for work one day because I was so engrossed in this book and lost track of time.
This is a heart racing, page turning, statisfying thrill ride that is a MUST READ this summer!
Thank you Netgalley for providing me with this copy, I will definitely be buying this as a gift for a thriller freak friend of mine.
I was super excited to read Hairpin Bridge. I was hoping for an edge of my seat thriller.
What would happen if your twin committed suicide but you didn’t believe that was the true story?
In Hairpin Bridge, Lena goes back to the spot where her sister Cambry jumped off the famous bridge. What happens when Lena finds out the truth behind her sister’s death?
It had potential and at times the suspense was exactly what I was craving. However, I feel like the different POVs got in the way. And sometimes I was confused on what or where the narration was supposed to be from.
I want to thank Netgalley and Joffe Books for the chance to read Hairpin Bridge in exchange for an honest review.
This book was SO good! Taylor Adams has done it again. I loved his previous book, No Exit, and Hairpin Bridge delivers just as much of a punch.
It has a similar claustrophobic feel as No Exit, but this time, instead of being stuck at a rest stop like in No Exit, our lead character finds herself on a bridge with a maybe killer.
Hairpin Bridge is told through three different POVs; a blog post, a story the main character is writing, and the present day at the bridge. I enjoyed this a lot!
I thought the pacing was perfect as well! It was so gripping and fast paced, but also took the time to let us get to know the characters. Which I think is a tricky balance in thrillers.
Overall, this book is a wild ride and will keep you hooked from the first page to the very last.
Lena Nguyen is devastated to learn that her estranged twin has committed suicide by jumping off Hairpin Bridge. Corporal Raymond Recevic has accomadated Lena by meeting her at the site to answer all her questions. Lena has her suspicions about him, despite his seeming openness because right before Cambry died, Lena received a cryptic text from her naming the officer. As Lena gets closer to the truth, she’s also getting closer to losing more than just her sister; perhaps her own life.
Hairpin Bridge by Taylor Adams was a harder read for me. After hearing so much about No Exit, I had very high expectations. All the action takes place in one night and began to get repetitive for me. The strongest part of this book was the way Lena wrote what she would believe to be Cambry’s version of events. Lena was an extremely strong main character and I wanted her to win. The last part of the book was suspenseful and redeemed the beginning of the story. I will still try another book by Adams but it won’t be moved up my TBR quite as fast. Thank you to William Morrow for the gifted copy.
3.5 stars!!! So after reading No Exit (one of my fave reads of 2020) I had super high hopes....it was very good, but it didn’t keep me on the edge of my seat like his previous books. It was a little slow to start but once I got about halfway through, I couldn’t put it down. I love that the main character Lena was relatable and such a badass. I was rooting for her more and more each page I read. Thank you for the ARC, really enjoyed it!
I was a huge fan of No Exit, so I was really excited for this one but ultimately it was an epic fail for me. I couldn't stand the main character and all of it was completely unbelievable and way far-fetched.
I really enjoyed this one! I liked the sentence structure and the way the scene would switch in the middle of a sentence. The writing was super gory and the tension was so palpable which I loved. The plot felt very high stakes which I also loved. The way the action scenes were written felt straight out of a movie. The atmosphere was so detailed and well described, which again felt straight out of a movie. My only complaint is that some parts were a little convoluted– there were so many speculations about what happened it was hard to keep it straight. Overall, a very enjoyable, high-tension thriller!
I went into Hairpin Bridge expecting it to be a fast-paced thriller, and I even expected it to be implausible at times. That's what I loved about No Exit. This one was just too unbelievable for me to get on board with. A lot of the scenes felt repetitive (all of the car chases, shoot outs) and the amount of "twists" felt gimmicky. I liked the blog entries and reading Cambry's point of view. I also liked the single setting and the atmosphere and actually think it would make a great movie. The book unfortunately felt a little dragged out with unnecessary scenes and descriptions.
Thank you to NetGalley and Joffe Books for the opportunity to read and review an advanced readers copy of this book. This in no way affects my review, all opinions are my own.
HAIRPIN BRIDGE is an intense, riveting thriller following Lena Nguyen as she desperately pursues the truth behind her twin sister's suspicious death. The story unravels as we get different points of view from Lena, Officer Raycevic, and some surprise third party characters. I thought the jumping stories were interesting and kept me invested because I had so many questions from the very beginning.
I did feel like this book started very slowly and continued to drag up until the last 25% of the story. I was also a little confused as we found out different twists that contradicted earlier chapters (which did all come together in the end, but working through it was difficult). I did appreciate Lena's character and wish we could've learned more about Cambry from an objective point of view.
The ending was a crazy roller coaster and made the entire book worth the read. It doesn't live up to No Exit, which is one of my all time favorites, but if you're a thriller fan and want to dive into a story with some really great twists I would still pick this one up!
I loved the sound of Hairpin Bridge. A grieving sister trying to find the truth behind her sister’s “suicide” three months ago. She’s determined and she knows there is something fishy with the story from the highway patrol man who found her body. But her search for the truth turns into a nightmarish fight for survival.
Taylor Adams is an engaging writer and he did well in setting the hook. This was a fast paced read which for the most part kept me interested. Then came the parts where I felt we were stalled on that bridge just going around in circles and I found my attention span quickly waning. Thankfully the action picked back up and we made it to the end.
So what’s my problem? Overall this was a bit too far fetched for me and I found Lena and some of the scenarios to be unrealistic. I liked that she was ballsy and brave but she also had way too much good luck and skill to be believable. Although there were some twists I didn’t see coming and plenty of action, It was just too much for me. And the ending? Nope! So I’m kind of in the middle with this one, I didn’t love it or hate it.
Honestly, I really wanted to like this one. I was in the minority with No Exit and did not think it lived up the hype. So I decided to give this author another go because I heard this book was awesome. I don't know if I agree. The format was confusing and seemed jumbled. At times I was unclear what Lena was making up or what she knew for a fact. And during the "Cambry's Story" she was telling the story but also talking to Cambry....and the reader? I don't know. I get the blog part. That was interesting in how it was incorporated throughout the whole book. But, I just feel that this was all over the place. I still do not really understand it all. This came off as a slasher movie that had blood and guts for the sake of shock value. I think it could potentially be an interesting movie but there needs to be more details. I felt that the book drug out some scenes unnecessarily but then did not provide depth else where. It felt jumbled. I did enjoy the mystery of trying to figure out what really happened and if Ray was telling the truth so I stayed hooked. However, I did not feel any connection to Lena or Cambry. Nor did I truly get a sense of them. 2.5 stars rounded to 3.
While Taylor Adams's first novel, No Exit, was a natural edge-of-your-seat, can't-put-down thriller, I felt like Hairpin Bridge tried to hard to be that. It was an interesting plot and story, but it sacrificed clarity for "suspense" and it ended up being more confusing than anything else.
Thanks to publisher and NetGalley for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
My first novel by Taylor Adams , I actually had not heard of his books before but saw/read about it and thought I would enjoy it.
It’s about Twin sister.s....Lena and Chambry.
Lena, her estranged twin sister, is convinced Cambry was murdered. Lena heads to Montana to get answers from the highway patrolman who was the last person to see her sister alive — but she already knows he’s a liar..
A fast paced thriller that is difficult to put down if you love this kind of book then this is for you!
