This one was fine. Definitely not as good as No Exit. I was glued to that one. If you like thrillers it’s worth your time.
Thank you to the publisher and author for giving access to Hairpin Bridge as an early Read Now access. On the surface, the novel starts in a promising fashion. We meet Lena Nyguen who loses her sister in a tragic manner and is searching for answers. Then, we see a showdown between her and the officer, Raymond Raycevuc, whom she believes is responsible for her death. The novel, however, felt long to me. While the author made interesting moments throughout the novel, I was often left confused and bewildered by the events that were taking place. While I have not read the author's No Exit yet, I had higher expectations for this novel given the buzz it had created but was disappointed in the way the plot was executed. I, think, overall the genre of thrillers are difficult to pull off for many authors. I think Adam's struggled to create a believable world that could be felt with the interesting plot that he had imagined in the novel. I am sure his next book will be amazing as I have heard amazing things about No Exit, which was also a book of the month pick!
i requested this to see if maybe this one will be better than no exit (one of my least favorite books) but after reading friends reviews (who loved no exit) and they didn't care for this one, i'm not gonna chance it. thank you for the opportunity.
This book was just as good as his first novel, full of suspense and lots of twists and turns. I know a lot of people have problems with this books but I honestly really enjoy them, they keep me entertained and the plot twists really do get to me.
Lena's estranged twin sister drove to a bridge in the middle of nowhere and jumped two hundred feet to her death. But Lena doesn't believe that so she has driven to that very bridge to find out what really happened by interviewing the highway patrolman who supposedly found her sister's body. But Lena is confused, he seems like such a nice guy but there's one problem, his story isn't adding up. And he can't explain why there were sixteen attempted 911 calls from her cell phone before she jumped and why in her last text to Lena he's mentioned by name in it.
This tale of revenge was so fast paced and action packed my heart was pounding the whole time I was reading it which is pretty common for me when reading books by this author. My hair was standing on end at certain points and I'm pretty sure I annoyed everyone around me with all of the gasping I was doing. It's highly entertaining, dark, twisted, and is basically like a ride on a roller coaster. I could not put this book down and I wish I could read it again for the first time to feel all the feelings again.
*Many thanks to William Morrow for the gifted copy for my honest review!*
I really enjoyed this book and how the story unfolded. I feel I would definitely recommend this book to people who enjoy thrillers.
While on a road trip, Cambry, Lena Nguyen’s sister, jumped off a bridge and died. Lena though is not convinced this is the real story. There are a couple of strange things happening: the state trooper who found Cambry’s body was mentioned by name by Cambry on her final text message to Lena. On top of that, Cambry had been stopped by him earlier and after, Cambry was trying to call 911 repeatedly. Lena will do anything to figure out what happened.
The book started strong and it’s definitely intense throughout it but the point of views was hard for me. The story alternates between the sisters but the writing is similarly enough that sometimes it’s confusing. There were a couple of surprising moments by the end that I really enjoyed. It is an enjoyable read but I think “No Exit” is still Adam’s home run.
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher, William Morrow, for the ARC.
After reading No Exit, I think we were all excited for the release of Hairpin Bridge. In some ways the books are similar: 1) one rural setting, mainly closed off from the rest of the world, 2) only a few characters to keep track of, 3) everyone has secrets. However, Hairpin Bridge is less exciting, less atmospheric, and more drawn out.
Lena Nguyen is out to find out why her twin sister, Cambry committed suicide, because frankly she doesn't believe it. She heads to the scene of the suicide, Hairpin Bridge, aka Suicide Bridge with the state patrolman who found her. Ray just happens to also be the last person to see her alive. Ray and Lena play a verbal game of cat and mouse, each revealing a few secrets along the way.
The book is okay, just not as great as Mr. Adams has been in the past. It honestly felt like a plot line from the tv drama Big Sky. Both conveniently taking place in the middle of nowhere, Montana, and both involving creepy State Patrolman. So if you like that show, this may be the book for you! Rating: 3.5 stars
Thank you to the publisher, William Morrow, for providing me with an advanced copy via NetGalley in exchange for this honest review.
This one starts off so quick. One sister was roaming and out finding herself, but she'll never come home. The other sister is headed out to see her final spot and try to see the town where it all ended. It was a good start. It has a breakneck pace feel, like you can't flip the pages quick enough. The story is twisty and the secrets are slowly revealed through each chapter. I was surprised by how it all played out but satisfied. Brutal, and gritty, I loved this one.
A huge thank you to the author and publisher for providing an e-ARC via Netgalley. This does not affect my opinion regarding the book.
The pacing of this one felt in line with No Exit and I found myself raving to the finish to see what would happen! Whatever Adams is writing I’m reading!!
If you love a fast paced thriller ... THIS IS YOUR BOOK! I could not put this one down. Hairpin Bridge definitely delivers! I was recommended this book by so many different people so I couldn't wait to read this!
The constantly changing narration of what really happened that night keeps you wanting to continue to read to see what will be revealed in the next version. If you like really tough heroines and a really unusual storyline then you won’t want to miss this one.
This book started off pretty good. I enjoyed the premise of the story and also the characters. Also, there were lots of surprises and plot twists.
What I liked: the writing style. Taylor can write some really good and eerie scenes. He really knows how to create a creep atmosphere! I also really liked seeing Cambry’s point of view. I thought it brought more to the story.
What I didn’t like: super unrealistic. The plot twists were implausible. It didn’t make sense and eventually I was just confused and uninterested.
I was extremely excited to receive Hairpin Bridge by Taylor Adams through NetGalley for my honest review. This book became a "mashed potato" book for me as I wanted to save it for a time where I wanted to be on the edge of my seat. Yes, this book, exceeded expectations! I'm unsure of how Adams writes such believable female characters being hurled into suspenseful situations; yet I'm hooked.
I was about to move across the state and I wanted a gripping audiobook. Thinking about how something like No Exit by Adams would be the perfect fit and remembered that I had the opportunity to listen to Hairpin Bridge on Audible.
I was deeply engrossed during my road trip between Charters Towers and Roma through the dry and dusty Australian outback. I almost didn't want to get to the next rest stop, so I did not have to pause the book. In hindsight, probably not the best time to read a book with multiple car scenes including car chases. I was gripped through the journey of the a twin, revenging the death of her sister and not stopping at anything to do so. Adam's "world" building is fantastic as the Hairpin Bridge becomes a character within itself and you to will feel and see the bridge through Lena and Cambry's eyes.
I would highly recommend this book as fast-paced thriller for all to enjoy.
Oh where to begin with this book. The beginning was gripping and I was totally enthralled. I had no idea where the story was going and I was excited by the anticipation.
The middle - or 70% of the book or so - was not my cup of tea. It felt overly dramatic and theatrical yet boring at the same time. I felt like the story sort of stalled as all of this fluff was introduced yet nothing really happened. I found my internet waning and my eyes rolling - a snake? an unlikely sharp shooting skill? several times everyone should be dead yet here we are? You really need to suspend belief to submerge yourself in this story and I often felt like it would play out better on the big screen than on a Kindle.
I was pleased with some of the twists toward the end which bumped my rating from a 2 to a 3. I sort of wanted a more depressing ending with how the book had played out but I would be lying if I said I didn’t get a little teary with the epilogue.
I listened to this book on audio and found it a bit confusing. It was hard for me to tell if Cambry’s story had any merit or if it was just Lena hypothesizing. The two narrators also got confusing because I think they were used more to differentiate time rather than characters but it took a while for that to resonate.
All in all I suppose this was entertaining but really I was just ready to be done with it. After loving No Exit, I will definitely give this author another go but won’t be recommending this novel.
Taylor Adams has crafted another thriller in his new novel, "Hairpin Bridge." This novel centers around twin sisters Lena and Cambry and the afore mentioned bridge. Cambry supposedly committed suicide by jumping over the bridge, but Lena doesn't believe that's what really happened. Writing her blog and uncovering evidence is Lena's newest goal. This gets her into trouble when she lures Cambry's killer to the bridge in an effort to get him to confess. I was surprised by all that was uncovered throughout this novel, but felt it was a little unrealistic that this teenager could accomplish as much as she did.
Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC. All opinions are my own.
While this wasn’t my fav spite I’d the two by this author, still kept me on my feet till the very end. I enjoyed the twists and the story telling just couldn’t fully connect.
I really loved No Exit by Taylor Adams so when I saw Hairpin Bridge I had to give it a go! I found it hard to know who I was reading about when it changed POV. It just felt really long and I didn't have fun reading it.
After her twin sister’s death, Lena Nguyen travels to Magma Springs, Montana, where Cambry died. Lena is determined to reconstruct her sister's movements and prove that Cambry's death was not a suicide. Law enforcement officer Raymond Raycevic holds the answers, in Lena's opinion, and she will stop at nothing to find out the truth. Will the answers be given on Hairpin Bridge, 200 feet above where her sister died?
I struggled to finish this book, as the dual perspective format ruined the flow for me. Bouncing back and forth between the present and the past, Hairpin Bridge was a search for answers that took such a circuitous route that I ultimately lost the connection. Lena had her suspicions, yet she took chances that most people would not. The plot was not all that believable, especially regarding the situations that happened in the past. If the author gave more of a look into the desolate setting, some of the story would have made more sense. One of my biggest issues with the book was that the author made it too obvious that something was amiss regarding the police officer, so the ending came as no surprise. Overall, I wanted to like the novel, but it is not one I would recommend to others.
Disclaimer: I was given an Advanced Reader's Copy by NetGalley and the publisher. The decision to read and review Hairpin Bridge was entirely my own.
No Exit is one of my all time favorite thrillers so I was really looking forward to this one! Although nothing can compare to No Exit, this was a really great thriller that kept me on the edge of my seat!
For starters who doesnt love a badass woman lead?
lena Nguyen's twin sister supposedly commited suicide by jumping off a bridge but Lena doesnt buy it so she heads to "Hairpin Bridge" and meets up with Officer Raycevic to figure out exactly what happened to her sister.
The entire book takes placein the space of a day and when i tell you that a lot happenedin that day i am not exxagerating. This was an action packed affair. There were gun fights, car chases, blood and gore. Some over the top but it made for a very entertaining read. The perspective changes from what is presently happening, to Lena's blog post, to Lena's book about what actually happens to her sister. this format kept me engaged and on the edge of my seat. feeding me crumbs until i get to the pie. Masterful!
Having loved No Exit, I was excited to read Taylor Adams' latest release, Hairpin Bridge. Cambry Nguyen committed suicide by jumping from Hairpin Bridge. Or did she? As identical twin sister Lena goes back to meet the police officer who found Cambry's body, she struggles to accept how Cambry died and is on a quest for the truth.
I really wanted to love this book and I did up to about the 40% mark. It was fast moving and exciting. The back and forth storyline between Cambry and Lena made for tense and action packed reading.
However after this point I skim read as it became dragged out and a bit repetitive. I did finish it but it was a struggle as I became disinterested in finding out what really happened. 3/5*
