This book gave me mixed feelings.
It started off good, with all the mystery about the "Campus Killer", Charlie going in a car with a complete stranger and of course the reader knows there is something off about that.
But what comes next is so confusing. What you thought was going to happen at the beginning, got completely turned around and you suddenly think "No, this can't be happening, c'mon" and you think the book is now ruined.
Then something else happens and you suddenly think "Really?!"
So, to sum it up, I actually really liked it, even if it made me feel horrified in the middle part.
So sorry it took me so long to read it!
For me, the plot was too removed from anything believable to invoke any real emotion. To me, a thriller should have your heart racing, your lip bitten, your mouth dry. I was just smiling at the ridiculousness of some of it. And I’d guessed “whodunnit” far too early.
I DNF'd this at 50%. I couldn't get on board with following a protagonist that seemed to have little common sense. How many red flags does a person need to have presented to her before she decides to bail out on a journey that didn't need to be taken in the first place. I was disappointed as I have liked other books by this author. I don't think it would put me off reading more from him, but the subject matter of this was all over the place.
Another brilliant book by Riley Sager. I’m a huge fan and he is the only writer I’ve enjoyed all Psychological Thriller. Gripping and couldn’t put it down.
Thanks to Netgalley and publisher for the arc of This book when I recieved it
Sorry late review had technology issues at time)
Amazing he does it again such a compelling thrilling edge of seat... wanting more and more highly recommend 5 stars!!
This is a great book! There is non-stop action that really has you second guessing what's going to happen next, which makes it a really exciting read. It's very fast-paced, but not at all rushed, so even though the plot speeds along, there is still enough background and development to ensure that it's still a strong narrative. Loved the characters and the fact you don't know what has happened or who are the victims/villains makes it even more compelling. Halfway through I had no idea what was going to happen and was completely gripped, after this point, it does go a bit over the top & unbelievable, in the context of it being a high-action storyline still managed to work. The addition of Marge as a character put me off slightly, and I preferred it before she was introduced, but overall this was still a great read.
Stayed up till the late hours cause I just couldn't put it down! Tense and addictive, it was a good change from all the romances I usually read.
I recently finished reading “Survive the Night” by Riley Sager, and I have to say, it was quite an experience. The story is set in 1991 and follows Charlie Jordan, a college student who decides to accept a ride from a stranger named Josh. The catch? She suspects he might be a serial killer. The premise alone had me hooked, and I was eager to see how Sager would unfold this thriller.
Right from the beginning, the book is a fast-paced, edge-of-your-seat ride. Sager does an excellent job of building tension and suspense. The setting, confined mainly to the interior of a car, adds a claustrophobic feel that really intensifies the sense of danger and uncertainty. I particularly enjoyed the twists and turns that kept me guessing until the very end. The finale was jaw-dropping and tied up the story in a way that left me quite satisfied
I really like all of Riley Sager’s novels. There is a familiarity although something unique about each one- I do believe he has got better and better since his first novel.
I finally read my first Riley Sager, and it was a fun, quick read. It was even more unique than most other thriller / mystery books I have read before, so it kept me more engaged for majority of the pages.
UInfortunately, in the final section of the book, as identities start to be revealed the enthusiasm wore off. Too many characters motivations, when revealed, were either exactly what I had thought they were going to be from the start or felt the same subversion of expectation that another character had been. My disatisfaction with these reveals further grew as the final plot elements were so incredibly over the top and impossible to imagine ever happening.
Luckily for the book, it turned out to be a deliberate exaggeration of the facts for plot purposes. I can respect that, and definitely did not see that reveal coming. But ultimately it was not a reveal I was invested in and the reveals I had been invested in felt predictable and boring.
A fun read, but not one that will stick with me. But I think I will continue on to read more Riley Sager as Survive the Night was eaxctly what I wanted out of a palate cleanser for the first 2/3s
"Survive the Night" by Riley Sager is a gripping psychological thriller that takes readers on a tense and suspenseful journey. Set in the 1990s, the story follows Charlie, a college student with a troubled past, who decides to share a ride home with a fellow student after the death of her best friend. As the journey unfolds, Charlie becomes increasingly suspicious of her driver, leading to a chilling game of cat and mouse. Sager skillfully builds suspense with twists and turns, keeping readers on the edge of their seats until the very end. The novel masterfully explores themes of trust, paranoia, and trauma, delivering a satisfying and unpredictable conclusion. "Survive the Night" is a rollercoaster of psychological thrills that showcases Sager's talent for crafting intense and atmospheric narratives.
My first Riley Sager book and I was underwhelmed. I found the characters self obsessed and quite frankly stupid. Not a recommend from me.
2 stars. Wasn't my favourite Riley Sager book unfortunately. The plot was okay but the pacing wasn't the best and it was quite mundane in terms of the setting.
I feel like Sager has become somewhat of a veteran in the thriller genre, so while they're never something I normally gravitate towards, I thought this would be a safe bet, and I wasn't wrong! I really enjoyed that this took place in just one night (hence the title) as I think it was the perfect vehicle to allow the pacing to ramp up when needed, and provide a satisfying ending. I thought the context of Charlie's former friendship with her dead roommate was enough to be interesting, but didn't weigh the story down in detail, and the general vagueness of everything else about her life allowed for maximum mystery. I was hooked right from the start, and the tension felt palpable between Charlie and Josh in the car, and I didn't guess the twist at the end, which is always my mark of a good thriller.
I love being given the opportunity to update our school library which is a unique space for both senior students and staff to access high quality literature. This is definitely a must-buy. It kept me absolutely gripped from cover to cover and is exactly the kind of read that just flies off the shelves. It has exactly the right combination of credible characters and a compelling plot thatI just could not put down. This is a great read that I couldn't stop thinking about and it made for a hugely satisfying read. I'm definitely going to order a copy and think it will immediately become a popular addition to our fiction shelves. 10/10 would absolutely recommend.
This was the last Riley Sager book I had to read and I have yet to rate one of his books less than four stars. Well it seems I have saved the worst for last as I just found this book so disappointing. I had heard mixed reviews before reading but then I do find Sager's books are divisive. Personally I usually love them but unfortunately not this one. It was slow, muddled and anticlimactic so rather than a tense atmospheric read which I normally expect it was a literary car crash. Sager is the master of creating likeable unreliable narrators but with Charlie she was beyond unreliable which made things far too confusing to follow. This is the second book that I have read recently with a girl stuck in a car with a serial killer premise and neither hit the mark. In this instance I was desperate for Sager to turn things round and shock me but instead I despaired as he took me on detours instead which amounted to even more disappointment. One small saving grace was the movie references littered through the story but even that was enough to save it and despite being set in the 90s it really could have been set any time as there was very little reference to it. If you are looking for a fantastically gripping trapped with a serial killer story this is not it and may I suggest you look for Intensity by Dean Koontz which is utter perfection!
Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with an ARC of Survive the Night by Riley Sager. I've voluntarily read and reviewed this copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Wow! This was a thrilling ride. While I normally don't really read thrillers, because I'm a scaredy cat and I prefer to be able to sleep at night, the premise of Survive the Night sounded intriguing enough for me to try it. And I'm glad that I did. I didn't not expect for this story to go and end the way it did. There were probably more than 4 different twists during this story that caught me totally off guard. Hats off to Riley Sager for crafting such an interesting and thrilling story.
This thriller has a good plot but it wasn’t exciting or thrilling at all.
It is very much a character driven book. The big reveal was so predictable. It’s not as good as the authors other books
My first Riley Sager book and I loved it!
Imagine being stuck with a stranger in a car and all you need to do is survive the trip. As crazy and scary as it sounds, that's almost the premise of this book. And its so addictive and keeps you hooked till the last page.
Thank You Netgalley and Hodder & Stoughton for this ARC!
An enjoyable read, well written and entertaining. Hadn't read this author before but would consider reading again.
