I really enjoyed this thriller from Kathryn Bybee. There are some authors whom you just enjoy spending time reading because you know the currency of your time will not be wasted. That’s how I feel every single time I pick up a book by Ms. Bybee. Whether it’s a contemporary romance or thriller, it’s just amazing! An Unexpected Distraction is another example of her stellar writing. The thing I thought most interesting about this one is that it’s a departure from most of the things I’ve read for her. I’ve been following along with this series and the thing I love most is that it’s a departure from contemporary romance. The school mentioned in the story intrigues me. I have so many questions, like where are the other graduates? I feel like there’s an opportunity for many more books.
I just fell in love with all the characters. I especially love a bad a$$ heroine and Jax is all that and then some. I love the juxtaposition of Jax, a capable trained assassin being thrown off her game by love. I also loved that the hero, on the other hand, is a pencil-pushing accountant. A great guy, but with zero fighting skills. He knows the woman he’s falling in love with. He knows she is capable, and he doesn’t mind playing second fiddle when it comes to fighting the battle. I thoroughly enjoyed this one from start to finish. I encourage you to buy it and dare you not to read it again and again.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own
Its Jax's book, its a richter girl, its a badass heroine written by the ahhhmazing Ms. Bybee.. so yeah this book was a slam dunk ( i forgot to review this ages ago )
I love this book, It is the third in the series but can be read as a standalone. Jax is called back to London and goes undercover with Andrew in Richter. Not only do they have to be undercover, but they also have to deal with their feelings.
THis book has everything it needs to be an awesome book, suspense, romance, and a great story line.
** I received a copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for a honest review**
Thanks Netgalley for allowing me to read this book. Jax received a call that she needs to come home. She flies to London and learns that her father is living with her brother and neither one will tell her why. While in London she meets her brothers friend Andrew. I liked the different characters and the chemistry between Jax and Andrew
This is one of those books that it definitely pays to read the other books in the series before reading! The main character, Jax, grew up in a very strict and very secretive boarding school called Richter. Now that she is out of school, she works for MacBain Security that for years has been on a mission to find out more of those secrets. But the real question is who is ultimately pulling all the strings at Richter and how is it that those secrets extend so far out beyond the school. And now Jax and others are in danger because of the secrets and the people guarding them. One of my favorite things about this series is just how intricate the plot has become as it proceeds through the series. And given the open ending on this book, there are more secrets to be revealed and I can't wait to see what they are, Catherine Bybee has done it again and I definitely recommend reading this or any of her other books (but definitely in order)!
I am a big fan of Catherine Bybee and this book didn't dissapoint. It follows the story of Jax who works for Neil and his crew who have featured in several other of Catherine's books. Jayx gets called to London by her brother to look into their parents marriage breakdown. I enjoyed the bit of romance mixed in with the thriller storyline. Although part of a series it could be read as a standalone book. Thanks to netgally for the early copy.
Jax gets a call from her brother asking her to come home. She’s never been asked to come home so she knows something is up. But what she finds she would never have guessed. I am loving this series and each book seems to get me even more hooked into each of their lives and the investigation into Richter. They are so good and it sounds like another one is coming and I can not wait!!!
Every book in this series has been better than the last. This series is a spinoff of some prior books by Catherine Bybee focused on the horror story of Richter, the military-ish boarding school in Germany. These stories show the ripples of that school several years after things were blown wide open. Jax was one of the students at Richter destined for life as an assassin or worse. Her family was extremely well off in Great Britain and sent Jax to Richter for - reasons. She met her best friend there and became and incredibly skilled operative (now working for the good guys).
When Jax's family in Great Britain starts to fall apart, she has to step away from the life she is building in California to help her brother manage the family crisis. While she is there - and learning more than she ever knew about her parents - she connects with Andrew. Andrew is her brother's best friend and is a very normal, very even keeled financial advisor. Jax is anything but normal. But - there is no doubt - from the beginning that Andrew is perfect for her.
I adored everything about this book. Catherine Bybee is a master of writing suspense while still keeping the romantic elements strong - and remembering that the characters are actual real people with real lives. Jax is a seriously kick-ass heroine and Andrew is the perfect foil for her. Jax clearly needs someone who will accept her for who she is - but also give her a safe, calm place to land. Andrew is definitely that safe harbor - and even seeing Jax's job very very clearly - he sticks with her and doesn't shy away from her life. The role reversal from a typical romantic suspense was fantastic.
I highly recommend this series - but you don't have to read the other books to understand what is going on here. But it will help you care more about the characters.
I received this as an ARC from NetGalley, but these opinions are all my own.
An Unexpected Distraction by C. Bybee, published by Montlake, is the third book in the Richter series. Every book in this series is about another couple and can easily be read as a stand-alone, the books are best read in order.
Jax, a 25 year old PI was attending Richter Academy. Her best friend and co-worker is Claire.
When family matters lead her back to London, her life's a bout to change again.
AUD is a fast paced, absolutely gripping, complex romance with thriller elements. The story had me right from the start, just like I easily connected with the characters that gave me a ride in this heartwrenchingly, breathlessly story. I recommend the book and the series.
This was a wonderful re-introduction to Catherine Bybee. I’ve read a the weekday brides series and loved it.
I liked the story and and the premise. I had not read the first and second book in the series, but I did not feel like I was missing any information. The story focuses more on the mystery than the romance, but I loved it that way.
The main characters are both very well written. Their chemistry and banter felt very natural and I liked that their relationship progressed gradually.
Jax was a wonderfully strong and independent, but I loved the vulnerability as well. Andrew was an equally amazing hero. All in all it was an enjoyable read.
Excellent. A real mix of friendship and wedding dress shopping, via gun and knife fights and espionage with a healthy golden thread of romance. A really well constructed plot support by clear and descriptive writing that brings all the bangs, tears and kisses to life making you root for Jax and Andrew to have their happy ever after as well as for the mystery to unravelled that little bit more.
An Unexpected Distraction
Another exciting read from Catherine Bybee, this was the 3rd book in this series, as with book 1 & 2 there was so much excitement. I could not put this book down and finished it in 2 days. I love the tightness of the Mac Bain Security team, everyone has everyones back. Jax went to see why her parents were getting a divorce and found true love and happiness for herself and renewed her relationship with her Mother. Loved this book!!
3.5
This is such an enjoyable and well written book!! Even though I haven't read the previous books it was very comprehensible as each book follows different characters. We didn't know all the answers because the mystery is ongoing! I recommend it!
An Unexpected Distraction by Catherine Bybee a thrilling five-star read. This is number three in the Richter series, and in my opinion it’s the best of the series, I enjoyed the first two, but this one, blew me away. It wasn’t just Jax that has me so gripped, they could be read as stand-alone at a push, but other characters do pop up and leave you wanting more. There are so many good points about this story, relationship building and drama a plenty. I expected a good story like the first two, but I ended with a great story.
Jax Simon works for MacBain Securities in California as an operative. She is smart. She is tough. Those working for Neil MacBain are like her family. Jax has a family in England that she has never felt close to, but when her brother calls to say there is an emergency and she needs to fly to England she goes.
Her parents are separated. Her father has moved in when her brother and her parents are avoiding conversation.
While investigating the split of her parents Jax decides she will find out once and for all why her parents sent her to Richter, a military boarding school in Germany, when she was 12 years old.
Andrew picks up his friend’s sister, Jax, from the airport as a favor. He is attracted from the start and Jax can’t stop thinking about him either.
Andrew gets involved in the investigation with Jax, not realizing how dangerous and exciting her life really can be. After awhile they realize someone is following them. Other surprises abound from the investigation and others, including Jax, are at risk. Add the unexpected attraction to Andrew with the investigation into her parents and why she was sent to Richter and Jax’s intelligence and toughness kicks in.
My favorite book in this series! Jax is smart and snarky and fun and interesting to read. !
I was given an ARC through Netgalley for an honest review.
Jax receives a call from her brother asking her to come to London to sort out a family emergency. When she approaches her boss, Neil, he says there's a job in Europe foe her so go ahead. She is incensed when she finds out that her brother, Harry, has sent a driver rather than meeting her. The driver is actually her brother's best friend Andrew who is intrigued by Harry's little sister. This runaway action packed story is everything you expect from Catherine Bybee. Expect plenty of plot twists and intrigue.
I thoroughly loved reading the amazing and engaging third book in the Richter series. When Jax is called home by her brother, Harry, for a family emergency, Harry sends his best friend, Andrew to pick Jax up at the airport. The family emergency ends up being a case for Neil's security team, and as Jax and Andrew spend more and more time together, attraction and passion ignites. Read the highly recommended, wonderfully written, full of twists and turns, and another must read by the phenomenal author Catherine Bybee.
I reviewed a copy of the book through NetGalley.
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC received for an honest review
An Unexpected Distraction, book 3 in Catherine Bybee’s Richter series doesn’t disappoint. It’s filled with mystery, danger, secrets and romance. I haven’t read the previous two books in the series, but it didn’t matter as I was able to jump into the story immediately. Jax returns to her native England from her California home at her brother’s request to help figure out what is going on with their parents. She meets Andrew who comes to pick her up at the Airport and mistakenly assumes that he is a just a driver when in fact he is her brother’s good friend. Her dad had just moved out from the family home and is living with her brother which is cramping his privacy. Jax is not close with either of her parents but agree to investigate the circumstances which has led to their separation. She finds a great ally in Andrew, who has an instant connection with her and finds herself seeking him out often. Andrew is a stable financier and doesn’t mind Jax's intelligence and isn’t intimated by her special skills. Jax follows multiple leads to figure out her parent’s issues and even has to travel to Richter to research some clues. Which ultimately brings in series of events which set off and end with looking forward to reading the next book in the series.
Catherine Bybee has done a wonderful job of delivering an amazing romantic thriller, which I can highly recommend with five awesome stars.
An Unexpected Distraction is the third book of the Richter series. This book focuses on Jax, a Richter graduate who is a bit unsettled in her personal life. She is a confident and very capable woman, and she seems like a person I would like to have as a friend! Jax can keep her cool in dangerous situations, speaks multiple languages fluently, and her gut instincts are phenomenal.
Jax returns to her native England from her California home at her brother’s request to help figure out what is going on with their parents. Jax’s dad has moved out and both her parents are very hush hush about the cause of their marital problems. Fortunately for Jax, her boss, Neil MacBain, is amazing and offers to let her work from the London office to allow her to get to the bottom of the family issues.
While in London, Jax meets her brother’s friend Andrew. The pair have an instant attraction and she finds herself seeking him out often. Andrew is a secure man and doesn’t mind that Jax is extremely intelligent and isn’t intimated by her special skills with guns and spy technology. His confidence contributes to the relationship becoming steamy! I love a story where the man is supportive and the lady is a boss!
Jax follows multiple leads to figure out her parent’s issues and even has to travel to Richter to research some clues. She finds out that the Richter school has detailed files filled with info- or dirt- on all of the students and their families. These files also contain info about her own father’s indiscretions and this sets Jax on a dangerous course of action to find out how Richter officials discovered the info in the Richter files.
I am a huge fan of the Richter series and I love all of the characters. Catherine Bybee can write an amazing romance in the middle of unimaginable drama! I was kept guessing until the final pages of this story which, to me, is a perfect way to enjoy a book. I hope that there are more books in this series!
An Unexpected Distraction will be published November 30, 2021. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. I will be posting a review today to Goodreads and my bookstagram, and will post a review on Amazon after the publication date.
This third story of the Richter story is not my preferred one (that would be the second one A thin disguise).
I was even thinking that the plot was poor and too personal for Jax. I was a little deceived that Andrew would be a ‘normal guy’
But in the last part of the book it turns out differently. The fear and danger come back on what seemed to be a dull private matter..
I liked Jax very much from the beginning of the series. At the end Andrew is a good match for her and reminds us that not only the military alpha heroes can have a place in romance.
