As a fan of Indiana Jones and the TV Series Supernatural, I found this book to be just my kind of read. It was clever and fast moving. If you are like me and enjoy adventure and supernatural themes, then you need to put down whatever you are reading now, and get this book.

The story was captivating, Marcus's story is woven seamlessly through time, detailing the story of his life and those he has loved, lost, fought with and against. The action picks up from the outset and does not stop until you've reached the last page, wondering where the time went. It was very hard to put down this book, it kept me up at night, I had to kept reading the story. I don't read much historical fiction but this book made me want to read more of them.

The synopsis of this book was very interesting and intriguing so I wanted to read it! I love historical fiction and fantasy and this book meshes them well!! The book begins in Ancient Rome with a warrior named Marcus. Marcus is in a battle with Barbarians to expand the Roman Empire. During the battle, he dies and comes back to life 3 days later. Turns out… Marcus is immortal and even when killed will return to life after 3 days. This sounds similar to Christ’s resurrection… because Marcus was one of the Roman soldiers crucified Jesus. Marcus, due to his immortality, spends the next two thousand years as a warrior working for the church. The novel bounces between history and things Marcus has lived through to the present day. Marcus has an enemy who is a fellow immortal. These men use to be friends but while Marcus has continued to work for the church in some aspect and kind of “kept the faith”, his former pal Thomas has turned against Christianity and went down a different path.

The book was slow to start and the bouncing between present and past threw me off initially. Also, I wish we would have gotten some more information about Marcus… like why he has continued working for the church, what exactly happened to his wife/kids, what motivates him, etc. I just wanted more details to really understand Marcus! It wasn’t until the second half of the book that things got really interesting. The ending set up book 2 perfectly and I can’t wait to read it!!

Greenwood has written an interesting book. It's a different take on some history and keeps the reader fully engaged. I enjoyed Greenwood's writing style and look forward to the sequel.

The synopsis of this novel intrigued me, so I downloaded it. I am very glad that I did. What a ride.

The story starts in Gaul in 37 AD. A Roman Centurion, named Marcus, is about to meet the Barbarians in battle, which he does not survive, well not initially, three days later he wakes up in a shallow grave, oh and he just happens to be one of the Romans who crucified Christ. Well one of the consequences of being the killer of Christ, immortality, not what one would have expected. The book takes you to modern day where Marcus is still a warrior, but now working to stop other immortals from causing chaos. One of the other immortals? Doubting Thomas, Through country after country, Marcus races against time to stop the other immortals from destroying the world. The book also gives glimpses of the past and the reasons why Marcus and Thomas make the choices they make.

This novel reminded me a bit of a Dan Brown or Steve Berry race agaisnt time edge of your seat thriller, but I also really liked the historical and supernatural aspects of the novel. What an original premise. The novel ended on a bit of a cliffhanger, so hopefully a sequel is in the works.
