This book pleasantly surprised me. The writing style of the author gave the book a fairytale feel to it which helped to get readers immersed in the story. The book has good pacing, with a sufficient balance of action and development of plot and characters. The main character was also well-written, with strengths and flaws that made her a good character to follow throughout the book.
The only negative points I have are very minor. The first is that some of the descriptions seemed weird, in a sense. The description was good but some of the word choices could have been different to avoid some phrases that didn't sound right. Description is good but it's not necessary to describe everything and leaving out some detail helps make the pace better. The other thing was that at points, the writing sounded juvenile and more like a 14 year old than a 17 year old but that may just be part of Tessa's character.
Overall, a good read with a solid plot and characters.

“It’s okay to allow yourself a moment of happiness, even when you’re stuck in a storm and the lights have gone out.”
Tessa is experiencing a lot of weird things that aren't attributed to a normal seventeen-year-old girl. We find out that Tessa is actually a unicorn queen bound to her human form as a method of punishment. We join Tessa on her journey in understanding who she is and her place in the world. She must understand her past and her powers in order to find her family, who have gone missing. We have two potential love interests, Cyrus and Edric, and Tessa struggles to trust either of them.
I loved the premise of this book. There is a lot about this story that is unique. Also, unicorns... need I say more? I liked Tessa. Although she was confused for a good portion of the book and made some questionable decisions, I enjoyed her character. There was a sufficient amount of action throughout the book and a lot of events happened. However, there were times like I felt like too much was happening. With a lot of things happening at once, I feel like I sometimes got lost in the explanations of things. I wasn't really clear on some of the specifics. I also felt like the ending did not tie up everything and I still have a lot of questions. I see that there is a sequel so I will be interested to see if this continues Tessa's story or focuses on another character.
With that being said, I still enjoyed this book! I think it has a lot going for it and I didn't need everything to be crystal clear to enjoy the ride. I would definitely suggest anyone who needs more unicorns in their lives to read this!
Winged is a really unique book. The premise is unlike anything I've read before. I'm not sure anything I've read has featured unicorns let alone as the main character. Tessa goes from a confused teenage girl to a kick butt unicorn queen all while trying to save her family. There's also world travel and who doesn't love world traveling! I hope if there are more books we explore the other worlds that were hinted at in this book.
The beginning felt a bit disjointed to me. That may have been what the author was going for because Tessa herself is very confused but it read choppy and a bit disorienting. Sometimes I would find myself confused about what was going on. As the plot picks up this goes away. I would have appreciated more background for the world and characters. I feel that would have enhanced the story and the attachment to the characters. Overall it was a fun read with characters we could grow to love in future books!
If I had read this book five years ago, I think I would have loved it. Unfortunately, I read it now and it just didn’t work for me. I found the plot predictable, and the character exchanges seemed stilted and trite. I didn’t like either of the love interests and the main character felt like a hollow caricature in places.
I really wanted to like this more than I did but I had to push myself to finish it. The cover art is beautiful though.
I received an arc of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
This was a compelling and thoroughly enjoyable read from start to finish with a great storyline, interesting cast of characters and all capped off by skilful writing. It's well worth your time if you appreciate great storytellers.
*3.5 stars*

First things first, I'm absolutely in love with that cover!
Book starts with Tessa, our protagonist experiencing weird things lately. She thinks she's starting to lose her mind. But one day, her mother and grandma go missing and it is somehow connected with Tessa. Turns out all those weird things are happening for a reason and she needs to figure out why to save them all.
The setting of this book is very interesting. I liked the writing and the even pace. It has a total fairyland feel. The plot is engaging and kept me hooked.
I liked Tessa the most. She is strong, determined and don't let anything come in her way.
But some of the things felt unexplained to me.
All in all it was a fun read.
The cover art, while very pretty, seems more for a children's book than a YA if I'm being honest. I would have passed on it if I hadn't seen it specifically say YA. That being said, the story isn't very unique at all. I had major deja Vu while reading it- The author did a good job at writing it, it just seemed like every other book I've read.
I thought the idea of the story was really unique! The plot was very similar to other fantasy books that I have read, but I still enjoyed it. I also really liked how each character was written, especially Tessa, I really liked her growth! It has a good “chosen one trope”
