I was sadly not a big fan of this one. It was a little overwhelming with so many characters to take in. I wish were eased a bit more into intros of everyone, but aside from that the story was just okay for me. I always love Nell's writing style, but this book just really fell short for me.
This was a very well done and well rounded novel. I really enjoyed the characters and the development of the plot throughout.
You’d think it would be safe to assume that a nature walk at a preservation center would be pretty safe - especially from gunshots. But that isn’t the case for these folks! An eclectic group that includes a lawyer to deaf app developer to a grandmother. This group is full of secrets and it’s enough to cause life-ending harm. A great story that never slowed down!
I did not enjoy this novel and as a result stopped reading halfway through. I kept waiting for the pace to pick up or something interesting to happen but it did not.
I have no interest in reading anything else by this author and can’t recommend this book to others. Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This book had me hooked from page one! My favorite part of reading this genre is when there are unexpected twists and turns, and the author of this novel delivered. Would definitely recommend!
I had this on my TBR for a while but glad I picked it up.
We get to leann the POV from all 7 characters and you change your mind constantly. And once you think you have mind your mind up there is another curve ball.
Short and snappy chapters that kept me thinking and the eerie atmosphere was brilliant.
I am very quickly becoming a fan of Nell and want to read more books.
This was very interesting and involving the deaf community made it a very different read - my father was partially deaf.
I would highly recommend this and Nell's other books I've read so far. Please keep writing.
A trope that I always pick up is a wintry, murder mystery so ‘Nowhere to Hide’ was an obvious choice for me. Seven friends hiking in a nature resort when a murder takes place and all of their secrets begin to come to light.
Since reading this book I have found that Pattison always includes a deaf character, which personally I love as a reader with a hearing disability. I enjoyed the story and it was full of cliffhangers and twists but for me the perspectives did get a bit muddled and repetitive at times.
A good mystery overall but with a hugely unexpected ending.
Reading Between the Wines book review #44/135 for 2022:
Rating: 3.5 🍷 🍷 🍷1/2 (rounded up to 4)
Book 🎧: Hide (also known as Nowhere to Hide)
Author: Nell Pattison
Genre: General Fiction (Adult) | Mystery & Thrillers
Available now!
Sipping thoughts: I love Nell Pattison’s way of writing. This was another one setting whodunit. Once you start reading this you will accuse every character of being the killer. At one point I accused the victim himself, lol. If you like the “group of people together, all with secrets, all with motive” books then this is the one for you. And the last few sentences in the book is the cherry on the sundae. I look forward to the next Pattison books-I REALLY hope it is the next in the series of Paige Northwood (Silent) series.
Cheers and thank you to @AvonBooksUK, @Avon and @NetGalley for an advanced copy of @Hide and @NowhereToHide.

I am rapidly becoming a big fan of Nell Pattison books. Having the main characters being part of the deaf community it a refreshing change, and something i have rarely seen before. This book was equally as excellent as previous ones. Very enjoyable.
I'm really enjoying Nell Pattison's books. They're opening my eyes to the deaf community and educating me in a way I didn't think was possible for a thriller book! I'm loving her writing, her characters and I will continue to pick up from this author.
Thank you for a brilliant book.
This was really good. It had me hooked from the start. It was part murder mystery part survivalist story. Only reason I wouldn't give it five stars is I was able to guess who the killer was pretty quickly (but not the motive) and some of the decisions made my characters were so dumb that it made me roll my eyes. Overall though the pacing was good and the end was *chef's kiss* perfect and just the way I like it.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for providing me a free copy of the ebook in exchange for an honest review.
A nature group arrange to meet on Boxing Day and have exclusive use of a nature reserve. They are a mixed bunch of people with a varied knowledge of wildlife. Apart from two sisters they do not appear to be linked, but is all it seems? One of the group at their Christmas drinks says he knows everyone’s secrets, who of the group doesn’t want these revealed and is prepared to kill to keep them quiet? Will the rest of them get out alive?
Great twist at the end
Hide is a type of ‘locked room’ mystery, a closed cast of characters in an isolated place. We have seven friends who meet for a hike at a nature reserve for a bird watching retreat. We start the story with some tension, as the group of friends had a small falling out prior to the events in the book, and a few characters are unsure of how they will all get along on this day. As they arrive at the spot to watch the birds, they split into smaller groups in separate cabins to watch. Soon after, a gunshot, and one of the seven is dead. The other six know that one of their number is a killer, and their out in the wilderness in the dark and the cold, trying to get home safely.
Hide is much like any other mystery of this type, we have a limited group of characters we focus on in a remote area. Hide is a little different in the fact that we get a lot of different POV chapters. Rather than one person who suspects everyone else, we have everyone suspecting everyone else. As the night continues, we jump more and more between different characters, seeing their fears, and their suspicions.
My favourite aspect of this mystery was the setting. Having it be outside, on a nature reserve in winter, made for a chilling atmosphere. The last place you’d really want to be stuck, wondering which one of your friends is a murderer.
This was a fast paced novel, moving quickly throughout the night and quickly getting to the murder and the fear-laden trek back. I really enjoyed that is was a fast paced story, and it was a fun and exciting book. This wasn’t the most ground breaking mystery I’ve read, but it’s fun for what it is.
This is definitely a book I recommend if you like isolated, closed cast of character type mysteries.
A good read , told from the POV of the 7 characters of the book. A real whodunnit which kept you guessing throughout and a massive twist and cliffhanger at the end which I didn’t see coming !!
DNF - Did not finish. I did not connect with the writing style or plot and will not be finishing this title. Thank you, NetGalley and Publisher for the early copy!
Seven friends get together on Boxing Day. One ends up dead. Another is a murderer.
Pattison writes a novel with a narrative that will leave you guessing; the author only wanting you to know what's happening when they are ready.
Each chapter is from the POV of a different character allowing us to gather more background and depth to each; this helps to lead the narrative and keeps the reader suspicious of everyone throughout.
With each character I found myself having a love-hate relationship, constantly changing my mind about how I felt about them as the novel continued. I even guessed one twist but second-guessed myself just before it was revealed.
However, I did not expect the twist at the end and was begging for more. I'm the kind of reader to create their own scenarios, but wow what a great read. I will be keeping a lookout for this author and have already checked out their other novels.
Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book for an honest review
7 acquaintances go into the reserve to see the starling murmuration at dusk on Boxing Day. Only 5 people will walk out alive. Each person has their own secrets to reveal in their own words through the chapters in the book. This story is very descriptive and almost ponderous at times and this could be off putting for some however the gravity of the situation soon becomes clear . The group finds themselves in the dark and freezing cold in a snow storm with an unknown murderer on the loose who has shot one of their group . Its now a game of cat and mouse. The reader can almost feel the frightening chill of the chase. 4 stars
Lovely read of a bird watching event going starting with a murder. It can only going to be complicated from this point, right? Right. The novel has a good pace and there is never a dull moment. The case is intriguing and the mysteries present here are well-nuanced. The suspect/s are revealed slowly (which is good for suspense building) and, what is very important for me, their motivations are believable.
This is not the most exciting of thrillers (meaning - these days the books are full of over-the-top brilliant, psychopaths, whereas this novel goes the more traditional (yet not boring!) route of witty British mysteries), but it reads very well and can bring you enjoyable reading experience. I myself am very satisfied and will actively look for more novels from this authoress!
I’m a big fan of Nell Pattison’s “Silent” series and was excited to learn she had written a new stand alone thriller.
The story is based around a group of seven very different characters who’ve formed a nature enthusiasts group.
The group meet up on Boxing Day at a nature reserve and it soon becomes apparent that they all have secrets to hide from the others. Exactly what these secrets are isn’t apparent and only adds to the suspension throughout the book. The style of writing kept me gripped, with each chapter being told from the point of view of the different characters. The way the storyline came together at the end was a definite “wow” moment for me!
This was a fast paced, atmospheric thriller of a read with great characters and one that I highly recommend.
Many thanks to Avon Books and NetGalley for the review copy.
