A chilling mystery thriller set in a secluded nature reserve on Boxing Day, which starts with an intense snippet into the scary situation that will unfold! Each chapter is narrated by one of the seven 'friends' who are on the nature walk, who all have their own secrets and flaws to uncover throughout the book. There are plenty of twists and turns in the story to keep building the tension. My view of who the killer was changed several times whilst reading and the final twists kept me gripped.
I kind of enjoyed this book but that might be me being quite generous. The plot twists kept me interested without fully being aware of ‘who dunnit’ until closer to the end…that said though I felt I was 50-60% of the way through the book before anything picked up and started happening. Unfortunately not of the characters were particularly likeable nor did they have much depth. It surprised me given the good reviews that this book has received. Overall, there is a lot of woods, and lot of snow and not much focus or direction. Wasn’t too keen on the end either…
7 people on a walk and things started going wrong. The premise was interesting and some parts were suspenseful. But the book did not grip me as much as I wanted it to. Too many unintelligent actions. Overall, an okay read.
Hide tells the tale of a group of people who all work/frequent a local nature reserve. They have a shared love of the wildlife and the group of friends arrange a Boxing Day hike. But not all of the visitors are there for the wildlife, and as secrets start emerging, the twists keep coming...and one of the group is found dead.
The book is atmospheric, and a beautiful setting. Each character in this book is a fabulous edition to the story and I particularly enjoyed Emily & Lauren's dynamic.
I always enoy an ensemble thriller, and this was no exception. Really enjoyed the cat and mouse' vs 'whodunnit' style of this book. Will definitely look to read more by Nell! Pattinson. And LOVED the end! I highly recommend.
Thank you Netgalley, Avon Books UK and Nell Pattison for the arc of this book.
Seven friends, all part of a nature group, organise to meet up one winters day to hike and appreciate the wildlife at their local reserve. As the sun sets on the snowy day, a gunshot can be heard. One of their group has been murdered. Was it the poachers they were concerned about? Or someone in their group? Unsure of who to trust, the remaining members must figure who the murderer is before it's too late.
I loved this book! I have never read a book with a deaf protagonist before and it was so interesting to read about sign and what wearing a cochlear implant is like.
I loved the wintery, atmospheric, claustrophobic feel of this book. Each of the chapters were kept short which made you want to keep reading. I enjoyed the different POVs.
Very fast paced and full of twists and cliffhangers!
The only negative was some slight repetitiveness in the middle of the book but nothing that really detracted from the story.
I finished the book in a day while it was a rainy winters day here in Australia and it just added to the reading experience.
This will not be my last book by this author.
4.5 stars
I love these whose done it, one by one the characters get picked off books. The characters were a little annoying though, there was so much drama, they called themselves friends but were they? Didn’t seem so. These “friends” go on a hike into the woods and slowly one by one they begin to disappear. So much suspense, the twist caught me off guard. I enjoyed that this book was told by different point of views, I think that added to the suspense. Good read!
Hide by Nell Pattison is the story of 7 friends who are out for a nature walk on Boxing Day to watch birds murmuration. While they are all in different hides watching the birds they hear a gunshot and find that Alec has been shot.
On their last meeting he had been boasting he knew everybody’s secrets so they all assume one of them has killed him to keep him quiet.
The remaining 6 are now trapped in the reserve with a murderer and with no way of asking for help, so they must find a way out in the dark and snow.
I throughly enjoyed this book, it’s told by the perspective of each of the 7 in turn and full of twists and turns!!
Thank you to NetGalley and Avon for letting me review this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Hide was a difficult book for me to rate. It didn’t work all that well for me. The cover is extremely enticing, and the plot sounded like one of my favourite thriller tropes – whiteout conditions. A lot of people think that the snow is this beautiful phenomenon that reminds them of Christmas time and sitting around an open fire. I, however, have always found it just a bit too scary. Imagine being caught in whiteout conditions, you can’t see anything, and someone or something could easily sneak up on you without your knowledge. Scary stuff! However, the plot was a bit flat for me.
Imagine spending Christmas with those that you love and then heading to a beautiful nature reserve to watch a starling murmuration on boxing day. Sound great, right? Seven friends decide to do just that. Laura, Emily, Dan, Ben, Morna, Alec, and Kai. You soon begin to see alliances form, but some characters can’t contain their jealousy. Laura is a character I took an instant dislike to. She has a horrible attitude to Morna and a complete god complex with the others. She must be in control and feels that only she can make decisions when things turn deadly.
Hide is a story ultimately of survival. Alec has revealed that he knows the group’s secrets, he is frustrated that the others don’t take him seriously. He plans to expose them and let the truth be known. However, before Alec can spill all that he knows he ends up murdered in one of the wildlife watching hides. Is there a madman running about the nature reserve or was it one of their own group members prepared to keep their secrets hidden? It’s from this point on that I really struggled to get through the book
The situation is dire, I think we can all agree on that point. One member of their group has been murdered in what seems like cold blood. Now if the shoe was on the other foot and I was put in that place, I wouldn’t want to split up from the group. So why on earth do they split up into two groups? Why can they not agree on getting to the visitor centre asap, instead of trying to get to the fence line of the reserve? It was a no-brainer for me, it just seemed like common sense. So much running around and dangerous behaviour could have been avoided with that simple decision-making.
Hide is a closed group murder mystery thriller packed fully it secrets and reveals.
Seven friends gather for a nature walk on Boxing day but all have secrets to hide. When they settle in to watch a murmuration a gunshot rings out across the reserve and a member of the group is found shot dead at close range. As the snow comes down heavy it is a race against time to call for help, battling against the elements and each other. Secrets aren't the only thing hiding when it starts to get dark.
There are many positive aspects of this book including the disability representation. First of all the disability is present in the main character who is well established and successful. Secondly, it isn't made to be the main focus of the book nor the character's main worry or concern. This helps frame the disability in terms of part of the character's adaptability and daily life rather than a constant reminder or hint of a disadvantage.
I did enjoy the main twists and reveals in the book as it kept the plot moving forward. This was necessary at points as certain sections dragged, especially the midsection. Through highs and lows are inevitable in books I feel too much time was spent seeking help and exploring seven people's internal thoughts.
I found the seven characters to be excessive as at least two didn't feel like they had enough backstory/ relevance to justify their presence. I think Kai and Ben could've been combined without sacrificing any plot points or intrigue. By considering the in-depth point of view of so many characters it hindered the progression of the book.
Overall I did enjoy the book and would recommend reading it when it is cold and wintery outside to add to the atmosphere it creates.
I really enjoyed this, so many twists and turns in it. Literally non-stop and thoroughly enjoyed.

The story itself is about 7 friends. The term friends is used loosely here because they aren't good friends. They go on a Boxing Day walk in the reserve. All though all of them have secrets there is one of them who knows each one of them. The latter is cleverly hinted at by the author throughout until the big reveal. Ihose friends find themselves in the middle of the wilderness where one of them pulled the trigger. Who is this killer trying to kill them? Why is the killer wanting them dead? What are those secrets seven of them carry?
The story is told from multiple perspectives. With some really good twists and a great ending this makes for an engaging read that help my attention throughout.
Thanks to the publishers and Netgalley for sending a digital ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This didn't quite work for me. Because it's told in a series of different points of view first person, you can work out who did it reasonably early on. The setting isn't large enough either, so the characters just go round in circles, leading to a lot of repetition.
This book fell flat for me . I found the book to be a little unrealistic. There was way too many characters involved. I didnt really connect to any of them and had worked out the twist earlier on.
I’m really sorry but I couldn’t finish this book. I found it too slow with too much of the plot spent just walking around. I just didn’t grab my attention
Seven friends, on out a winter hike in a Lincolnshire nature reserve, soon become six, when one of them is found murdered. And then, the hunt is on to find the killer among them .... and not be their next victim.
The narrative structure is that of different chapters from each of the main characters, alternating between them to build up the tension, as each character reveals their secrets and motivations. It's not an original narrative device by any means, and is particularly popular in contemporary thrillers, but is well handled here by the author.
There was one plot implausibility, for me: as the plot nears its dramatic climax, one of the characters, who is deaf, has to resort to typing messages on a smartphone to communicate with the person with her - and these messages get progressively longer! Not very practical or advisable, when there is a murderer on the loose who is hunting you down.
There is the obligatory postscript plot twist, but an affective one at that.
All in all, a readable and enoyable thriller.
Recommended.

Thanks to Avon Books, Nell Pattison and NetGalley for the review copy of Hide.
I have read a few of Nell's books and never been disappointed, so was really keen to get stuck in to the Hide.
I will be honest I did have to come back to this book, when I first I started it I found some of the initial detail around the bird watching group a bit too detailed and it just didn't hold my attention me at first. In hindisght I proabably gave up too quickly.
I came back after reading another book and I ended up really LOVING IT. Hide starts off slow, but then really ramps up to be a truly gripping read.
7 members of a bird watching group head off to see the murmuration together, including sisters Lauren and Emily - who wears a cochlea implant and Alec, who earlier that week had got very drunk and blurted out that he knew everyones secrets. A short while into their walk Alec is found dead - shot at close range - Ben found him, but claims he didn't do it, that someone hurt him too. Soon every one of the friends must start to ask themselves which one of them is the killer, what are their secrets and who really wants their secret to be hidden forever?
A story of cat and mouse, with added complications of history, disability and sinbling rivalry. I really enjoyable read. Stick with it and you wont be disappointed.
Seven friends. One killer. You can run, but you can’t hide…
The Boxing Day hike is meant to bring their nature group together.
Emily, the sister who never lets her hearing loss hold her back.
Lauren, the sister who always feels a step behind.
Morna, who doesn’t get on with Lauren.
Ben, whose feelings for Emily border on obsession.
Dan, the quiet newcomer to the group.
Kai, who isn’t just on the hike to enjoy the wildlife.
And Alec, the one who knows all their secrets.
What an intense read!
i loved how fast paced this was, the plot was really addictive.
Was a really who done it twist. If you like Lucy Foley and Agatha Christie you will love this book.
The winter hike is meant to bring the nature group together. Emily, the sister who never lets her hearing loss hold her back. Lauren, the sister who always feels a step behind. Morna, who doesn't get on with Lauren. Ben, who's feelings for Emily birder on obsession. Dan, the quiet newcomer to the group. Kai, who isn't just on the hike to enjoy the wildlife. An Alec, the one who knows all their secrets. As the sunsets, a gunshot rings out on the nature reserve. One of the seven is dead. And one of their number killed them.
⭐⭐⭐
I really wanted to love this one more than I did. The premise is one of my favorites. An atmospheric setting (the best part of this book). A group of people stranded. A Murder(s). A plethora of secrets...its book crack for me. However, other than the atmospheric setting and murder, this was just a group of incredibly unlikable people (with secrets) running around a nature reserve at night in a snowstorm while sniping at each other. 🤷🏻♀️ As for the twist, I figured out 50% of it halfway through the book, but the last bit got me, so kudos (and a bonus star) to the author for that!
