This is a true story which tells of the harrowing events surrounding a Jewish family during the holocaust but continues to tell what happened to three sisters who survived. A really emotional read, beautifully written even though it it very difficult at times. Recommended.
Against all odds, three Slovakian sisters have survived years of imprisonment in the most notorious death camp in Nazi Germany: Auschwitz. Livia, Magda, and Cibi have clung together, nearly died from starvation and overwork, and the brutal whims of the guards in this place of horror. But now, the allies are closing in and the sisters have one last hurdle to face: the death march from Auschwitz, as the Nazis try to erase any evidence of the prisoners held there. Due to a last minute stroke of luck, the three of them are able to escape formation and hide in the woods for days before being rescued.
And this is where the story begins. From there, the three sisters travel to Israel, to their new home, but the battle for freedom takes on new forms. Livia, Magda, and Cibi must face the ghosts of their past—and some secrets that they have kept from each other—to find true peace and happiness.
Thank you to Netgalley and Bonnier Books UK, Zaffre for the arc of Three Sisters by Heather Morris.
5 STARS!! If you have read The Tattooist of Auschwitz and Cilka's Journey you must read this new book by Heather Morris you wont be disappointed. This one is about three sisters in Auschwitz-Birkenau named Magda, Cibi and Livia whom make a promise to their dad that they would always stay together all three of them no matter what may happen.. so now this is the time for them to do so! Many years later after they made that promise Livia whom was only aged 15 at the time, was ordered to AUSCHWITZ! 19 year old Cibi decided to follow her sister and protect her or die with her.. Together they find through the hardships and the unbearable in Auschwitz.. if your wondering about the other sister Magda whom is 17 decides to stay with her mother and grandfather hiding in an attic of their neighbours or they hide in the forest when the Nazi military came round to gather up neighbours family friends etc.. but eventually she is captured and sent to the death camp.. this is an emotional and heartfelt story about three sisters whom are reunited and fighting to stay together at all costs from the promise that they made to their father..
This is ever such a good read exactly like the Tattooist of Auschwitz and Cilka's Journey HIGHLY RECOMMED IF YOU LIKED THE TWO OTHERS BY HEATHER AND IF YOU LIKE WW2 OR HOLOCAUST BOOKS!
Brilliant follow on read to the previous 2 other books. Always an interesting genre to read. 5 stars
A really good book. Loved all the characters and makes you really think. I felt like I was actually there, harrowing in parts and uplifting in others. Fantastic book
Such a harrowingly and emotive story telling the story of three sisters who survived the horrors of the holocaust. An amazing memoir and a story that needs to be told and read.
Brilliant. Heather Morris is a fantastic author, bringing the horrors to life of one of the biggest crimes to have happened in the 20th century. Gripping portrayal of the holocaust and three sisters who vowed to stayed together.
A third fascinating insight into life in WW2. These books have all had a unique voice and I have enjoyed them all, despite the difficult subject matter.
A fantastic story of courage, bravery and sisterhood, this is a harrowing tale about the atrocities of the Holocaust and those who survived.
Unfortunately whilst I loved the story, the writing style I did not. I found it very simplistic, repetitive and quite amateurish. As always, the experiences of those who were sent to Auschwitz – or any of the camps – was gruelling and tragic, but this story added little to what I already knew. If anything, Morris tells her Holocaust stories in an almost positive light; tales of prisoners establishing relationships with guards, bargaining for their needs, access to food and clothing etc, which isn’t true to the reality of the Holocaust and treatment the prisoners received at the hands of the guards. It no doubt went on, but somehow it doesn’t sit right with me and I don’t feel Morris did complete justice to the story of the Three Sisters or the inhumanity of the Holocaust as a whole.
To summarise; fantastic story, poor writing style.
What an emotional and moving book. Going in, I had an idea of what to expect but this really exceeded all expectations and I haven’t stopped talking about this book to my friends and family. Brilliant.
An amazing true story of three sisters interred in Auschwitz and although harrowing with the appalling things that happened to them it was also uplifting with the strength of the girls and the strength of the love for each other that kept them going and enabled them to survive. Definitely a story that will stay with you long after you have finished reading it
A fantastic end to a moving trilogy. Heather Morris just seems to get better and better. She handles sensitive subjects with an immense amount of care.
I was given a copy of Three Sisters by Heather Morris by the publisher in exchange for an honest review. This is the second book by Heather I have read. The book tells the true story of Three Sisters during their time at Auschwitz. An important book to read to understand what they went through and also what happened after their time there.
I love the authors style of writing, o have read all her books so far,
This such a beautiful and haunting read, o sometimes struggle to review books like this, it feels that you cannot do them justice.
A must read for any history fan
Based on a true story of three Slovakian Jewish sisters who make it through the cruelty of concentration camps in German occupied Poland. Stories and personal accounts from survivors of Auschwitz are plentiful and certainly there is plenty of incidents in the girls story where life could have gone another way and the struggle would have been over. Life was going to be a struggle forever as even when they get back home, life has changed forever. This is less of a novel but more of evidence of survival and never giving up. Harrowing and sad as you would expect. Thank you #NetGalley for the book to review.
This was an incredible book about the strength and love of three sisters who promised their father they would always look after each other..
Cibi,Magda and Livi were terribly close and stayed together through being in a concentration camp and on the death March making each other take one more step as they fell to the ground, just one more step.
After they went to live in Israel their relationship was just as strong right through to their old age.
This was an amazing book and my words cannot express what I thought of it.
The easiest 5⭐️ I have given in a while. What a book! An emotional rollercoaster of heartbreak, hope, despair and joy, filled with so much raw storytelling. Based on the true stories of three sisters who survived the worst atrocities of Auschwitz and go on to build their lives and families in Israel.
The story of the three sisters, Cibi, Livi and Magda, is remarkable. Cibi, the eldest, devotes herself to the protection of her youngest sister Livi as they are both transported from Slovakia to the concentration camps in Poland, whilst Magda manages to remain hidden at home caring for her mother and grandfather. Against all odds the sisters are reunited and give each other the hope to carry on. Suffering illness, starvation, violence and trauma, the sisters manage to remain hopeful, driven by their promise to remain together and look after one another.
Heather Morris has an incredible way of telling these heartbreaking stories, firstly that of Lale and Cilka and now the three sisters, with sympathy, devotion and care. I devoured this book, living alongside the sisters, feeling their pain and their struggles. There were tears and breaths held and I couldn’t have enjoyed having the privilege to read the story of these survivors more.
Having studied the Holocaust and visited the concentration camps in Poland, I still cannot even begin to imagine the experience, but Morris does a wonderful job of highlighting the full realities. The fact that this book was written in conjunction with the sisters themselves and their families makes it all the more special. The addition of an end note from various members of the family as well as a short biography of everyone in the story was excellent.
I could not recommend this book more. Thank you to Bonnier Books UK and NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I loved the first 2 books by Heather Morris, this woman knows how to pull on those heartstrings!
Whilst this was another heartwrenching, heartbreaking and painful read, I finished it feeling a little underwhelmed. I didn't really learn much more about Auschwitz that I hadn't already read, and I was expecting to be wowed by the extra details Morris puts into her stories.
This was a good book, and still relevant, but I wanted new facts, and it felt like I'd read it before.
This is the third book I have read in this series of books by Heather Morris and I didn't think this one flowed like the first two, but that may be because it was written like a biography rather than a fictional story.
It was interesting reading about the sisters after Auschwitz and how the author came to write the story. It is another harrowing and emotional book about the horrors of world war two and it will appeal to readers of historical fiction during world war two.
A story about three sisters who make a promise to their father before he passes away. A promise to always be together and look after one another.
But when Cibi and Livi are taken to Auschwitz Magda is left behind. But the sisters have a promise to keep, and they will!
A powerful and moving story of family, promises and loyalty.
If you are a fan of historical fiction Heather Morris never disappoints. Her writing style is enticing, keeping the reader captivated throughout. I am obsessed with this author, another amazing novel based on first had research. This is a history we all need to know, and this author is one to teach us.
