I'll be honest and admit I hadn't really followed Joe Wicks before. Then covid hit , and he came onto the t.v. more for encouraging children to take more exercise.
When I saw this book I thought it looked an excellent way of getting more vegetables and healthy food into the family. We are vegetarian and whilst there is a selection called Meat free, even the recipes that have meat in them could easily be adapted .
I like the look of this one . Quick and fairly easy recipes to follow.
A great bright colourful book with great photographs and with some lovely original recipes that appear easy to make.
The recipes are easy to follow and I can’t wait to try them all.
I haven't had chance to try any of the recipes yet but having skimmed through I'm sure that there will be some favourites for the school holidays. Always great to introduce young children to different tastes and textures
I’m loving this recipe book so many clever ideas in here I’ve not used beetroot much in my cooking and there is so many meals in his book that contain it so it must be be good. Joe wicks is an absolute legend and such an inspiration to many this is a real must for the family .
How cute are the photos too it’s lovely to see.
Just tried the Sweet Potato, Black Bean & Kale tacos for a speedy, no-drama lunch and it was delicious!! As someone who can actually burn a boiled egg, this book is just what I needed: clear recipes with simple steps and pictures. Thank goodness for Joe!
An interesting cookery book from Joe Wickes that claims it's for all the family but I think some of the ingredients are rather adulty, plus the recipes are aimed at small children (under 5's) where their palate is still developing. For teenagers, it's rather harder to get them to try avocados and cakes made with beetroot!
The book is divided into 7 mains recipe chapters:
- Speedy Suppers
- Bung it in the Oven
- On the Hob
- Big Batch
- Meat Free
- Cooking with Kids
- Celebrations
Most of the recipes have a colour photograph to accompany them. The recipes use metric measurements and come with easy-to-follow instructions. Included for each recipe is the preparation time, cooking time, and how many it serves (mostly for 2 adults and 2 small children). Some of the other recipes are able to be frozen too alongside those included in the Big batch section.
A few of the recipes use prepared ingredients and thus reduces the cooking time - take for example the Smoky chickpea jacket potatoes: preparation time 2 minutes, cooking time 10 minutes - this is all because the jackets are already cooked! Also Bung it in the Oven implies to me just one pan in the oven: nope, often there are more pans or you cook rice on the stove, so it fails on this front in my eyes.
The Celebrations recipes are unusual. They seem more in keeping with middle-class party food, courgette fries, marmite & spring onion straws or avocado mint choc chip ice cream.
Whilst it's good to get the children involved in food preparation and cooking from a young age and this book sets out to do this, it's not quite as family-friendly as I'd hoped it could be. Like I said at the beginning the ingredients are too adult, though I do think my family would enjoy the Super-simple Rosemary Lamb Stew.
I received this book from Netgalley in return for an honest review.
So a little secret, I love Joe Wicks. He is just one of those guys who I think would be fun to have a pint with and I love his no nonsense cookbooks because they are achievable and meals you would actually eat with your family not showstoppers that can only be rolled out for a special occasion. In the latest Joe Wicks cookbook we have family meals we all can make. I am already planning the chick and mushroom pot noodle (this will save me a fortune as well). I do however have to say he has stolen one of my family recipes with the butternut and ricotta filo pie as I make this for the family and its amazing so I will allow him to use it lol 😉. I have to be honest I did not realise how easy it is to make gnocchi so I intend to try that out shortly as well. This book is full of lovely photos of the food and of Joes family but even if you are cooking for yourself or just a big kid (husband) like me there are plenty of fresh ideas in here.
Who doesn't love some Joe Wicks in their kitchen??
I've got another one of his cookbooks, and I've always found his recipes to be simple to make, yet tasty enough to feed my family of seven without (m)any complaints! This is definitely the kind of book which will bring the family together over the dinner table and allow them to enjoy delicious food together.
I've only tried a couple of recipes from this book so far, but I can tell already that it's going to be a firm family favourite. If you love the Pinch of Nom recipes, this is a great book to add to your collection.
Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC without obligation.
like Joe and what he promotes and this is a fab mix of recipes suited for the whole family. Covering smaller light bites to batch cooking there is something for everyone. I can’t wait to try the sweet potato cacciatore recipe!
Thank you to Bluebird for sending me a review copy in exchange for my unbiased thoughts.
Quick and Easy - love a good Joe Wicks recipe! Everything I tried to was easy to cook and tasted great, plus there was lots of room for changing things up if I didn’t have certain ingredients etc.
