I did enjoy this book but there were parts of it that dragged out and it seemed to end quite quickly with everything wrapped up in one go. I would still recommend this book as it was a good thriller and kept you reading.
This story took quite a while to ramp up but once it did, I found it atmospherically creepy. An isolated island with a murderer on the loose always makes for a chilling read.
This book starts as a slow burn. Another take on the trapped on an island mystery. Flynn House is their location and it’s atmosphere can be felt thoroughly thanks to great writing.
I think it was quite a fast read and I would recommend
I love a good trapped murder mystery that is a quick read. This book is not drawn out and it kept me guessing the whole time. I had an inkling n ear the end, but was still surprised
This was a decent locked room mystery but it took a while to build. It was about 40% through before the plot really picked up and the mystery began. Once it did, I was hooked, but it was slow to get there.
Good characters, strong balance of back story to present time and the writing flowed smoothly overall.
Thankful for the ARC!
Excellent! Suspenseful from the first page to the last and kept me guessing the whole time. Very interesting and creepy storyline with a dual timeline. The characters were well-developed and the pace of the story made me want to avoid everything and just keep reading to the end. Once everyone arrives at Flynn House, it's almost impossible to step away as characters start getting murdered one by one, a storm has them trapped on the island with no communication to the rest of the world, and you don't know who the "bad guy" is - the "isolated in a creepy house and there's a murderer among us killing us one by one" has been done before, but Amanda Brittany adds her own twists and shocks to make this just unique enough to stand out. I'll definitely be looking for more by this author!

I found this to be an enjoyable read, keeping me on my toes throughout. The storyline was written well and flowed seamlessly. I look forward to reading more by this author!
The premise and setting of this book appealed and who doesn't love a good "locked room mystery" - well I certainly do. The book has a gothic/creepy feel that runs through it. My one complaint was in the reasoning behind the big reveal but I guess sometimes you have to suspend reality for the sake of fiction!
I didn't expect this book to be as creepy as it was but boy was I pleasantly surprised. This had gothic thriller feel and I loved it! The two story lines worked perfectly and I loved the ending. I highly recommend for my thriller reading friends.
This book has given me a book hangover, honestly I am reluctant to pick up another because I am still going over this one in my head it was so good!
The plot and characters were well developed, it was well written and fast paced. I enjoyed the clue style, hotel of horror with the flash backs. Each character has there own story even down to the ventriloquist dummies... I honestly want to pick it up and read it all over again already.
Such a good book!
Disclosure: Thank you to NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read this in exchange for an honest review.
Alice grew up with just her father and cannot remember the first several years of her life. She has just lost her father to a hit-and-run accident and is reeling from that loss when she receives an invitation for a free stay at a just opened boutique hotel. The hotel looks familiar to Alice but she doesn’t know why. Seeking some insight into her father and her background, she decides to accept the invitation, and the real action begins.
Verity is one of two children of a famous magician/ventriloquist. Together with her brother Hugh, they live a loveless childhood in a Gothic house. Verity and Hugh depend heavily on one another.
There are other major characters in the books and several other POVs, which develop the suspense further. I am not typically surprised by endings, but there were enough twists in the plot, that I was guessing who the culprit was until the big reveal.
All-in-all, I enjoyed this spooky book.
Thank you to NetGalley and HQ for an eARC in exchange for my honest feedback.
Fun, autumnal read. Atmospheric and perfect for those wanting a spooky book for the season. Loved the two time lines and pace of story.
This was intriguing and full of mystery. IT was a bit more halloweeny/scary than I was expecting but it made me love ti more. Really more-ish!
When Alice's father dies unexpectedly, she's left with questions about both his and her pasts, something he would never talk about. She also has strange visions of a house on the coast - one the apparently is very real, and that has been turned into a hotel she has been invited to stay in for a weekend by its owner. Arriving with her on-again/off-again boyfriend, not only is the hotel hauntingly familiar, she finds things a bit chaotic: the owner is missing, a storm is coming and threatening to cut the hotel off from the mainland, and guests' personal items have been going missing as well. Is the hotel and its weird happenings somehow related to Alice and her father? And can Alice find out before everyone winds up dead?
The set-up is great - a weird gothic hotel in the middle of nowhere, cut off from everyone in the middle of a bad storm? Yes please! And the author pulls it off very well. Things start off very slowly and then escalate slowly as the novel progresses: first, it's just little weird things, cell phones going missing, the owner is running late. But then it ramps up - I don't want to give too much away, so you'll have to read to find out what happens. By the time that ending drops, you're just waiting to see what the heck is going on out there!
And I did not see that ending coming at all! It was really out of left field, a little too much, perhaps, which is why I gave four stars instead of five. I don't normally do that, but sometimes endings are just a little too much, and this one may have crossed that line, I think. I don't know, read and decide for yourself.
But don't get it mixed up, I really liked this book. I recommend it! It was very good and I enjoyed it immensely. people who like creepy thrillers will really enjoy this atmospheric, Gothic story.
The island house by Amanda Brittany was a great suspenseful mystery with good twists and turns I didn't see coming. It has a very interesting plot set in two time frames and kept me engrossed all the way through. This was my first from the author and I look forward to more! 4 stars!
Oooh, this one was creepy! But not in a scary way, more of a mystery-thriller way. It's definitely a story that you shouldn't know much about before diving in, but overall, it was an entertaining read.
I gave this one 3 out of 5 stars.
I just wish there was more of a cohesive vibe to the POVs and timelines. The ending was engaging and nowhere near what I was expecting (in a good way!).
I think we can agree that the locked-room mysteries are all the rage now. I have to say they just aren't for me. I don't know if it's the short time period, the isolated setting, or the small cast of characters that make these books so damn tedious. All the chapters are rinse and repeat which begins to get boring,
Alice's father is tragically killed in a hit and run accident, she is devastated as he was her only family. Her father never spoke about their past or her mother, yet Alice has recurring nightmares about a house and a red door leading to an attic room. She has sculpted a replica of the house from her dreams, so she is surprised when she is invited to a new boutique hotel that is exactly like the house she has sculpted. How does this house relate to her past? What secrets was her father hiding?
This was one crazy story, perfect for Halloween. I felt like I was reading about a murder mystery dinner theater story and kept waiting for it all to be an act. This ended up being an unbelievable and twisted story.
This was a good book but it did drag a bit, there was so much suspense but it took more than halfway through the book for anything to move forward. I did enjoy it though and definitely recommend if you want a creepy read!
Thanks to Netgalley and @hqstories for the ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.
Wow I loved this book from start to finish . I loved the main character and was really rooting for her to find out her past but I didn’t expect that story . Great gothic gory story with lots of dead bodies and wondering who the killer was . I loved the ending and didn’t expect it . I definitely recommend this book , it’s the best book I’ve read in a while . 5 starts from me
