Hematite is a young vampire that wants to make her own way in the world, rather than following in her parents illustrious, traditional footsteps.
Instead of attending the expected Diaemus Academy for vampires, she opts for the more diverse Wolven School, full of a plethora of creatures that don't usually mix with vampires.
She has her best friend Drunela- a draugr, for company; her poetry, and a crush on a human boy... But being different comes with its own difficulties... and Hematite may find out the hard way.
This was a super quick read with a cast of quirky characters that were fun to follow, especially when they were getting up to no good.
The art style was beautifully dark and Victorian, with a muted autumn palette throughout. It gave off a really moody atmosphere that'll make for a perfect fall read.
Hematite's poetry was one of my favourite parts of this novel, the writing was dramatic and gorgeous!
I wasn't expecting the story to get so dark, but it was a pleasant surprise and I'm looking forward to reading the next instalment after that cliffhanger ending!

What a strange and fun story! Hematite is the kind of heroine we need in our modern stories. I think we can all learn to be a bit more like Hematite. A beautiful read for reader of all ages!
I came across this comic on Netgalley and the premise intrigued me. From the publisher, “Hematite is a young vampire who is trying to find her way. As a member of the illustrious Blackwood family, she faces pressure to conform to high society standards, but such grandstanding isn’t for her. And neither is drinking blood—she’d rather have vegetable soup! So it is that she opts for the more diverse Wolven School, rather than joining the ranks of her fellow vampires at the Diaemus Academy. Being different can be hard, though, and doesn’t always help to make friends. Luckily for Hematite, she has her poetry, as well as Drunela—a draugr who won’t let their differences keep them apart—and Emile, a human boy fascinated by the occult who would just love to take a peek at the Blackwoods’ private library. Unfortunately, bridging societal divides isn’t always easy, and can lead to terrible consequences…”
I love occult stories that blend vampires, werewolves, and other creatures, and this one has them going to school together. The retro, dark art style was fabulous, and it is left open for more. I got into the story and now I wanna know what happens. It was a quick read, which is about all I can handle outside of audiobooks right now, and I was glad to be able to sneak it in.
This was my first time reading a graphic novel since I read Ghostopolis in 2013, so I felt a little out of my comfort zone when I picked it up, but I'm so glad that I did. I loved this so much.
The art was absolutely beautiful, I loved the style. Plot wise, it was a great introduction to what will hopefully be many more volumes. I can't wait for future installments so I can watch character growth deepen and more of the plot unfold.
The only thing that I wish was different was the length, but that's because I was enjoying it so much that I wanted it to last longer.
Overall, this was a lovely book that I will be gushing about to anybody who will listen while I await the next book.
Hematite was a great graphic novel, the world was well formed and the characters were fun to follow. The artwork was also very beautiful, giving the story a classic feel with a slightly modern twist. We follow the main character Hematite as she maneuvers through life.
Hematite is a young vampire who wants to be more than just "a vampire". She's choosen to go to a school her parents don't approve of, have friends they don't like, and is smitten with a human boy. All while struggling to her natural urges, like the desire for blood, and growing power she doesn't always have a handle on, under control. What a full plate!
I found this story delightful. Easy to read while it grew in the seriousness of the plot.
I enjoyed the art and honestly Hematite displays to her friends. I found most of the characters to be likeable and care about their role.
I'm not sure I entirely enjoying where the next chapter might explore or the cliffhanger this ended on.

This...
This graphic novel was incredible! It was super fun and quick to read with beautiful artwork! This story had so many side plots with an amazing main character and wonderful and entertaining side characters too!
Throughout the story our main character, Hematite, is struggling with her own identity, and that of her friends and family! She experiences her first crush and all the emotions that come with that as well as dealing with a few other minor inconveniences of life as a vampire with her other monsterly friends!
The first volume in this wonderful graphic novel had such amazing and unexpected twists and turns and left so many questions unanswered but hopefully not for too long as I am dying to find out what happens next to the wonderful Hematite and her friends!!

I had such high hopes for this book. The topic of supernatural shenanigans is very popular right now with teen and junior authors, and it's one that I also favor personally, but there was nothing about the book that set it apart for me. The art-style was unique, but the colors all being muted to brown-ish tones (not quite sepia, just muted) did not make the characters or action stand out in any way. There are a good amount of panels I kept flipping through that seemed very superfluous.
I did read this all the way through with the thought that it was a standalone graphic novel, not that it would be a series, so that did affect the way that I interacted with the characters. I expected to learn more about each of the characters, but we barely got a glimpse into what makes them tick by the end of this first book.
I have questions about what age range this is really for, because it seems to flip between junior through the first majority of the book, then dramatically with a twist ending throws itself into the deep end of teens/adult. I don't think teens would enjoy the junior-level writing in the rest of the book, and that ending and the direction it seems the series is going in could be a little much for say a 5th grader.
There is a lack of real substance to the story and character arcs that left me wanting a lot more, but not quite enough to want volume 2.
I loved this book and atmosphere it creates. This world is so vivid and detailed, gothic and beautiful. The story, which becomes truly interesting by the end of the volume is something I found myself wanting for of. I can’t wait to see what comes next!
This book is so lovely and beautiful. I really enjoyed it and loved the art too. Definitely looking forward to the sequel.
Thank you to NetGalley and Europe Comics for providing me with a free review copy. <i>Hematite</i> is available for purchase now.
I love this book and I cannot wait for the volume 2 that i assume will happen because you can’t end on the note of <spoiler>necromancy</spoiler> and not publish another volume. The universe alone is so fun; it’s a mix of humans and vampires and werewolves and skeletons and witches and familiars and all that good stuff.
Hematite is a vampire from a rich and well-known family and her parents despise the fact that she attends a public school and eats mushroom-and-vegetable broth rather than the vampires-only academy and traditional blood diet that they would prefer. Hematite only has one friend who tries to help her open up and show the other kids at their school that Hem is more than just vampire stereotypes and prejudices.
They all go on an adventure together, the events which lead to Hem’s internal journey on who she is and how she uses her powers and her privilege as a vampire and what that means about her. This story covers themes of privilege, obviously, self identity, overcoming prejudices, and good ol’ fashioned friendship. The writing is all dialogue so it’s short and easy to read and accessible for readers of all ages and skill level.

Hematite is a young vampire struggling to find her place in the world who writes poetry and is in love with a human boy that is fascinated by the occult. She's kind of a vegan vampire which I thought was cute.
So some of the criticisms I saw while adding this book to my goodreads is that it really drops you into the action without giving you much back story of the characters. This works, but also hinders the story because in the first few scenes we see her clashing with her classmates when they catch her writing poetry to Emile, the human boy she's crushing on and later on she's hanging out with them. It's hard to really figure out what their friendship dynamic is.
That and this being the first volume in the series there was a pretty massive cliffhanger that kind of hit me upside the head. I really did enjoy the world even though I feel it should have been built up a bit more maybe with a little context to fill in the missing pieces and flesh out the friendships.
Otherwise it was really cute. I really enjoyed the art style, it felt very gothic without taking away from the cartoony feel which benefited the characters. The world needs a bit more fleshing out but there's a really good foundation there.
The illustrations were beautiful. I really liked the main character and its world. But the story fall short for me. It’s like a lot happened while at the same time nothing really happened. There’re some scenes I didn’t even know why they’re here. And the font used in hematite’s poem is a bit hard to read.
Finished this graphic novel in one sitting. A fun and witty read, perfect for a light reading day. The graphics were cute and in line with the style of the writing. Eagerly looking forward to the sequel.
I enjoyed this graphic novel about vampires and other creatures. I'm really curious to see where it leads as I'm sure there must be a follow up or whole series planned, considering the open ended final pages. I feel this tale will be popular with the students at our school who are always waiting for the next new graphic novels.

Thank you Net Galley for a chance to read the graphic novel Hematite. This is about a young vampire girl who is having problems accepting who she is. She goes to a public school of sorts where all kind of creatures go! This story is the first in a series.
Absolutely beautiful!! And the story is good too, although it feels more like a continuation than a beginning.
Hematite is a story about a vampire who goes through a journey through loss, friendship and taking control of one's destiny. The illustrations and colours are very nice and the story throughout is pretty interesting too. The book ended hanging and I suppose there's a second book and I would definitely want to read the continuation to this story, All in all, I read this in one sitting and really enjoyed it.
This book was overall a very well rounded and well done book. I do think it was a little mature compared to many other graphic novels, which is definitely a plus point. The art style was very consistent and set a spooky tone to the the whole story. The colour scheme the authors went with was also very well chosen, as it set the mood of the entire book. But clever art style wasn't the only noteworthy thing.
The story itself was well built and at one point, it did get kind of dark. The main character carried the plot perfectly and her personality also really impressed me. Her determination and bravery did inspire me alot. The friendship in this book was also something that deserves appreciation.
This graphic novel was SO. CUTE. I absolutely loved the art style and setting. The characters were really interesting and I instantly started caring about them. I will definitely will be reading the sequel when it comes out!
