I have said it before and I will say it again, this series is one of my absolute favourite MG series ever. I don't read much MG these days (more of an audition process for my niece and nephews so I can recommend books for them) but this is one I adore every time there's a new release. And this one was no exception. Just sensational.
Seriously fun series and who doesn’t love dragons? :D I’m mostly just jealous I don’t have one. Definitely a fun series to be getting to.
I thoroughly enjoyed my time in Dragon City with Billy and friends - even if it was a little tense at times! Lots of lovely moments mixed in with some sadness and fear! Familiar faces and new characters to love, not to forget some loathsome villains! Another brilliant adventure in this series!
This book was just okay for me personally. I still love the characters and the world that has been created but I sometimes feel like we’re just seeing the same story over and over again at this point in the series
Katie and Kevin never disappoint. This book is packed with adventure, betrayals, brilliant friendships, magic and dragons! Can't wait for the next one.
I enjoyed this though perhaps not as much as previous books. I felt the resolution was a little too easy perhaps? But I did love a couple of the new characters we got to meet.
3.5 stars
I am so glad there is a second book in this series.
It’s such a good fun well thought out book.
This for fans of how to train your dragon.
We really enjoyed reading more of the characters and the adventure they are going on.
Best one so far. This broke my heart and remade it! That is all I can say.
I also highly reccomend the audiobook.
Thankyou to netgalley and the publisher for allowing me an early copy of this book. This is one of my favourite middle grade series so i was very happy to gain early access, Dragon city certainly packs a punch in the amount of stuff packed into such a small book. It is a story following Billy and his friends on an unforgettable adventure. This is a book i happily read in one sitting, as i have done with both of the previous books in the Dragon Realm series. The stakes were definitely higher in this book and it it was executed perfectly.
DRAGON CITY is the shortest instalment so far, but manages to pack the most in. There is a competition, new allies to make - and old foes to meet again - plus a whole new world to explore. And throughout, Billy has to cope with loss, hope, and suspicion. There's also a lot to catch up on after the massive cliff-hanger ending of the previous book. It's all included without fuss of confusion, sucking you into the world and all its danger.
The Tsangs flex their "be cruel to characters" muscles in this book, putting Billy and his friends through a nightmarish future where they have to face down the Dragon of Death without the help of their own dragons. Even worse, Spark (Billy's dragon) betrayed them to create the future, and is working on the side of the Dragon of Death.
There is a set of chapters in particular that have the sort of character cruelty you'd expect in YA, but not in MG - it's not violence against them, but deep emotional pain. It's so well done, even making me doubt the "this is MG, surely it will be alright in the end" belief I have.
There's a new magic system introduced towards the end, which should be a lot of fun to play with further in the coming books. It's crucial to the final battle and one other major event (which allows the finale to happen), but there feels like so much more to come from the magic!
When these books were first acquired by publishers, only three books were sold, which explains why DRAGON LEGEND did not feel like the typical end of a second book in a series at least five long. Despite two more books to come, this book really does feel like a trilogy ender, with things well wrapped up. There is space for more adventures - and I can't wait for them - but DRAGON CITY does have that sense of thematic closure after the world has been saved.
With plenty of witty dialogue and gasp-out-loud moments, DRAGON CITY is a brilliant, unforgettable adventure.
The end of DRAGON LEGEND was a real shocker, so suffice to say I was beyond excited to get my hands on DRAGON CITY, and oh boy, did it not disappoint. The Tsangs have crafted yet another unforgettable, rip-roaring adventure story sure to sweep you off your feet.
I particularly loved how Billy was forced to wrestle with the fact that his dragon Spark had turned evil, and the consequences of that choice. Charlotte, Dylan and Ling-Fei are more wary of Billy because of Spark's betrayal, creating a ripple of tension between the friends as they navigate their new landscape in Dragon City. There was one point in the book where my mouth dropped open for how shocking it was! No spoilers, but it was brutal! Yet the story never delves into too dark a territory, and always undulates with a message of hope even in the gravest times.
If you're looking for a light-hearted, fantastical series with a hint of magic, give the DRAGON REALM series a try.
WILL I READ ON? Yes!
I couldn't put this down...another fantastic dragon book. Each book in the series keeps leaving you at the edge of your seat, I highly recommend this series to fellow readers.
I think this just might be my favourite book in the fantastic Dragon Realm series! Full of action and excitement, the gang are even more reliant on their relationships with each other as they try to rescue their dragons and find their way home.
We rejoin Billy, Dylan, Charlotte and Ling-Fei in some sort of dragon beauty salon in the middle of Dragon City. The evil Dragon of Death rules over everyone – dragons and humans alike – in a brutal regime. Spark has betrayed the group and the children are trapped in a dark and distant future.
Life without his dragon is agonising so when Billy spots a chance to fix the mess the world is in, he jumps at it – quite literally. With the help of a gorgeous little dragon called Midnight, a gold pig who will eat just about anything and some powerful dragon magic, he just might manage it.
There’s a real sense of camaraderie in this story as the children realise they are stronger together. It’s an incredibly risky adventure but when has a little danger ever stopped them before? Trust, loyalty and forgiveness determine whether they will fall or fly.
Thank you to Simon & Schuster UK Children’s for this high speed, heart-bonded adventure!
This story follows Billy, Charlotte, Liu Ling Fei and their friends have to save the world from the evil Dragon of Death which had wreaked havoc across the human and dragon realms. They face multiple dangers and challenges, some of which involve old friends, and some old enemies! Hi
His was a brilliant read, much anticipated and loved by my 11 year old son. A must for the school library, and long with the preceding books.
An excellent sequel which will be enjoyed by dragon lovers everywhere.
Thanks to #NetGalley for the opportunity to read this ahead of publication in exchange for an honest review
This series keeps on getting better as the stakes get higher and the friendship between the characters deepen.
Thrown into a totally bizarre world it’s great to see the characters we’ve grown to love be really challenged and this third volume really opens up the world, and the future of these books in interesting ways.
Hold on to your hats - Dragon City is another rollercoaster ride of adventure, emotion and action. At the start of the book, we are dropped straight in on the action as Billy Chan and his friends have found themselves in an alternative reality, far in the future, where dragons rule and humans serve. Our band of heroes must begin by finding their dragons before they can contemplate taking on their deadliest foe - the Dragon of Death. Can they survive in an unknown world, filled with fear, torture and torment?
For fans of the series, Dragon City is everything you could want it to be. It ties up many of the loose ends created throughout the series and, in many ways, feels like the final book (I was surprised to read there is another offering in the series, coming next year). It is another battle between good and evil, with incredible world building from the Tsangs. We are introduced to a new clan of dragons to love, and a new set of adversaries to rage against.
Dragon City is fast-paced, bittersweet and incredibly immersive (for a book set in a parallel universe!!) I know the fans in my class will be delighted with this addition to the Dragon Realm series. Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC.
Warning: contains spoilers for books 1 and 2.
Of all the mythical animals, dragons must surely be amongst the most popular to include in stories. Unlike other creatures, such as unicorns, that only tend to appear in books for a younger audience, they seem to hold a universal appeal – as evidenced by adult fantasy such as Game of Thrones, where they are an integral part of both the plot and the appeal of the books and adaptation. I guess that this is at least in part historic, with many myths and legends telling of brave heroes defeating fearsome beasts, but also it seems to me that dragons are just so much more exciting than their competition.
Certainly in this continuing series, the dragons are everything that they should be: powerful, fierce and highly intelligent, but with the twist that they are not all evil. In fact, together with their human partners, the four dragons whose adventures we have been following have been battling against the terrible Dragon of Death for the good of human and dragonkind. Until now, because towards the end of Book 2, one of our heroic dragons, Spark, changed sides with the result that her companions have all been catapulted forward in time to the Dragon City of the title – a terrifying place where enslaved humans live in total dread of their dragon masters under the rule of the Dragon of Death.
Billy and his human friends Dylan, Charlotte and Ling-Fei have been separated from their dragons and are scraping a living by providing a dragon-grooming service to feed themselves while trying to come up with a plan to not only rescue their dragons, but also defeat the Dragon of Death and her dreaded nox-wings (her evil dragon followers), and find their way back to their own time.
After finding a train hidden underground which provides them with a safe place to rest and sleep, the four children continue to work and plan and become aware of a special celebration to commemorate the five thousandth anniversary of Dragon City coming to be and decide to attend. Billy finds himself taking a more active part in the celebrations than he had intended, but manages to escape and find his way back to his friends.
With things looking more and more desperate for not only them, but also the other humans within the city, Billy and the others find themselves taking bigger and bigger chances in the hopes of finding their dragons. Will they be successful? Will they be able to defeat the Dragon of Death? And even if they can, how will they ever find their way back home again?
This is such a thrilling series and now that we are onto the third title, we are thrown straight into the action from the off. After Spark’s betrayal, the balance of power between good and bad has overwhelmingly been tipped in favour of the Dragon of Death and her minions and it is hard to see how Billy and the others will ever manage to overcome all of the obstacles put in their way to put things right again.
Fans of the series will be thrilled to know that the adventure continues beyond this title (Book 4 is expected March 2022) but I do think that in this case you need to be a fan of the series to pick up this read. Although the events of the first two books are recapped, which I found useful as it’s a while since I read them, I think anyone trying to start here will have missed too much of the action to fully appreciate this for the great read that it is. Suitable for confident readers in Year 4 upwards, this is a great action-packed fantasy adventure – one full of twists and turns which left me on the edge of my seat and unable to guess what was coming next right until the very end.
Enormous thanks go to publisher Simon and Schuster and Net Galley for my advance read ahead of publication on 2nd September. 5 out of 5 stars.
There are certain authors and series that I will happily drop everything for when I know that there is a new book to read, and Katie and Kevin Tsang's Dragon Realm series most definitely falls into that category. Having read an early copy of Dragon Mountain way back in April 2020, I've been gripped by the series, so discovering that the highly anticipated Dragon City was available on NetGalley this morning meant that I had no other choice but to abandon all plans, ignore my family and rejoin Billy, Dylan, Charlotte and Ling Fei on their continuing adventures.
If you remember, Dragon Legend left us on quite the cliff-hanger, with the quartet arriving, rather bewildered, in Dragon City, and that is where we join them at the beginning of book 3. They are trying desperately to get by without being noticed by the dragons, in particular their old adversary the Dragon of Death who rules supreme in this world. Life is completely different 5000 years in the future where dragons rule over humans. It's a scary place for Billy and his friends who have been separated from their dragons; however, they are determined to find them again. Having found a long-abandoned underground train in which to stay, they begin to work out how they are going to locate their dragons. They believe that attending the five thousand year anniversary will help them out but this only causes more problems which, in the end, leads them to entering the grand tournament which holds the promise of the winning human being bonded with Death's Shadow. What will they do and how will they survive? To know that, I'm afraid you'll have to read the book!
I know that when coming back to a series it can take time to reacquaint yourself with the characters and past plots, but chapter 2 does a wonderful job of weaving a recap into the plot whilst also telling us that Billy and his friends are currently working as dragon groomers (not a job I'd particularly want having read the consequences!). It means that you are straight back into the action without having to remember what happened previously.
It was so good to be reunited with Billy and his friends who have some tough times ahead of them. I don't want to give too much away but their strength of character and their individual skills are most definitely challenged in this book. It was also good to see characters like Goldie making an appearance as well as some old adversaries, but there are also a host of new characters for you to enjoy (and perhaps hate as well!). Midnight was a particular favourite - young but brave and feisty!
Whilst it's wonderful to be back with the characters, I believe that it's the plot of Dragon City which is the real pull in this book and, without giving anything away, I have to prepare you for a rollercoaster of a journey with excitement, tension and the most unexpected twists; I can guarantee you a gripping visit to Dragon City and one you won't want to leave until you've read the final page. I experienced every emotion possible during the course of the book (and yes, I'm warning you that I cried on more than one occasion!) and was quite unprepared for the effect the plot would have on me - you have been warned!
I know that the next book will be the final in the series (if my memory serves me well) and I'm both excited and nervous about it: excited because I can't wait to see what's next for our friends and their dragons, but also sad that it will be last we see of them.
Released on the 2nd September, I know that Dragon City will be just as big a hit as Dragon Mountain and Dragon legend, and I already know that there will be a huge scramble for it at school next term!
Right, I need a moment or 12. I think I cried for at least 8 chapters. This is JUST BRILLIANT. So action packed; so full of our favourite heroes; so full of hope; so much of a battle between dark and light. Being back in this land where the darkness and hunger for power has taken over and everyone is afraid, and there being just the tiniest smithereens of hope and kindness brings so much to this story. So many twists and turns, some little moments of humour. I just adore this. This gang of characters is one of the best. I just love these dragons and their humans so much.
