Grace is a death cleaner. And yes, it's exactly what it sounds like. After a few cleans she sees a pattern, but nobody is listening. I don't want to say more without it giving it away but trust me when I saw READ THIS BOOK!
This is a very different but striking book. It is a gripping read . Grace is a forensic cleaner, and is a quirky dark humored gem of a character. This is a great read and perfect for a summer holiday.
This is a strange book to review without giving away the story but needless to say I actually enjoyed it and empathised with Grace, even though she is obviously a very flawed individual. Grace is a post death deep cleaner, called specifically to clean up after someone has died and not been found for a long time. She leads quite a lonely life and has a very difficult relationship with her alcoholic father. She finds a link between one of her ‘clients’ and their past and decides to play detective. A good book but not a light read.
Really interesting concept, great story and excellent ending!
There were a few twists I wasn't expecting which made this book unputdownable!
Firstly, I did not realise this book was by Craig Robertson, as it’s under a slightly different pen name! But that’s by the by. This book touched on a world that very very few of us get to experience, cleaning up after a death and I found it was full of genuine surprises throughout for me which is normally unusual. I find a lot of books similar so for this to keep me on my toes was great. Definitely recommend!
I really enjoyed this book. I loved Grace and found her intriguing. The premise of her job is one that we don’t like to think about.
Grace McGill cleans up premises where people have died. With such an intimate view of these crime scenes, she begins to spot something odd and common among a few of them. When the police don't take her discovery seriously, she begins to investigate herself.
After a slow start, I was glad I persevered with the book since it slowly revealed a much deeper story than I expected with some welcome twists along the way.
This was a good story, I was intrigued as to what was gonna happen and I'm glad I picked it up! Want to read more from this author!
The Undiscovered Deaths of Grace McGill was an interesting read and not what I initially expected.
Grace is a crime scene cleaner specialising in deep cleans when a body has been undiscovered for months so death isn’t anything new to her. When she accepts a cleaning job of a flat where the body was undiscovered for 5 months Grace notices similarities to a previous clean which sends her spiralling into an obsession with the case of a missing woman over 40 years old.
This book has good plot and character development with twists that the reader won’t see coming. Will definitely be recommending.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I LOVED this book! I don't think I have ever read a book about a "death cleaner" before. Such a unique and morbid profession, it had me hooked from page one. The writing was phenomenal. Intelligent. Disturbing. Twisted (oh, what a twist there was). Grace was quirky, shy, strange. And that ending...let's just say everything about this book was brilliant and if I could give it over 5 stars, I would. Run (don't walk) and pick this one up today!

I have not read any of this authors books before but definitely will read any new ones this was a great story and I never guessed the ending kept me hooked all the way to the end
This started very slow. It took me a while to get into it. But it's quirky, and it grew darker and more interesting as it went on.
I was really intrigued to read this book after seeing so many glowing reviews and reading the plot line.
Sadly for me, even though it was an easy enough read it just didnt hit any high notes for me to personally rave about it.
The lead in the story is as per the book title, Grace McGill. A cleaner... not just any cleaner but one that cleans the homes of the deceased. Grace is a loner, a complex loner at that.
Whilst the actual storyline was intriguing I found that the weight to carry the book laid purely on Grace's shoulders. All other characters, even those integral to the plot where just skimmed over. I understand that the story is told in the first person so we really get to know Grace but I found the skirting around of other characters quite important to how I found the overall book.
The storyline was original and I did like bits of it but in all honesty it's not one I'll be recommending on.
2.5*
Thanks to netgalley and Hodder and Stoughton for the ARC.
I really enjoyed this - it got darker as it went on and I loved the way Grace revealed more of herself throughout. It kept me really engrossed. A great read.
Wonderfully original premise - it was right up my street! I loved it. A dark, twisty, addictive mystery. Recommended.
In this original thriller Grace, is a death cleaner and becomes involved in investigating the death of her most recently deceased client. Grace is a complex character from a dysfunctional family and the author portrays her with empathy and sensitivity. Unfortunately, I found it hard to connect with Grace or the slow paced plot and this was not a compelling read for me.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this digital ARC.
My first book, that I have read by this author, absolutely brilliant! Highly recommended, and I will definitely read others written by this author!
Fab new offering from an author I'm already a fa of. Grace is such a well developed character - felt a little different from the usual protagonists we meet, and she really carried the story forward well. Great setting and dialogue with a plot that kept me turning right till the last page - thoroughly recommend.
An ok book
Wasn’t one of my favourites
But read to the end
Didn’t have me hooked
But wouldn’t put me off reading more by this author
Thanks NetGalley
Wow. What did I just read?? This book is a doozy.
The protagonist, Grace, is a death cleaner, meaning that when a person is discovered in their home and has been deceased for a long time, she is called to go into the home and restore it to livable conditions. The start of the book focuses on this aspect of her daily life. She gets called to take these jobs or not. She is admittedly OCD and takes her job very seriously. She enters the home with all the cleaning supplies she needs as well as garbed in protective gear. She then enters and takes the time to treat the person with respect and dignity in the clean up of their space. The actual bodies have been removed when she arrives but the remainder of their lives is still there. She makes it a point to say a prayer and to gather belongings that she believes tell the story of the person.
She also has an interesting hobby of remaking these rooms into dioramas that are as precisely detailed as possible. As she takes these jobs she uncovers clues that lead her to believe that a series of deaths is not random and that they are all tied together by an incident several decades previously involving a missing girl.
Grace is a quirky character and hates interaction with others. This is one of the things that makes her good at this job. We see the story from conversations that she has aloud and from the conversation she has in her head. As the story evolves, we find out Grace’s secrets, taking the tale in a different direction.
There were times in the story where I felt like I wasn’t completely sure that I was following everything. But, overall, this is a good story with some surprising twists that keep the reader guessing. I would say that for me, the start of the book was much slower paced and then picks up around the halfway point.
A very different and imaginative story. Recommend!
