A powerfully compelling fast-paced thriller. This is the assured voice of a writer coming I to his own.
Sam lost his mother and brother in a car accident 25 years ago. His father survived, but it feels like Sam lost him too as his grief and anger prevented him from being the parent Sam needed. Now his father is dying and as Sam makes the pilgrimage to see the man he has been estranged from for so many years he is shocked that his dad’s final words suggest that his mother may still be alive.
Danger, intrigue, love and hate all combine to take Sam on a journey to America to the scene of that fatal accident and to try and find answers. It’s a fantastically-paced story as we try to get to the bottom of what happened, why Sam is now in danger and whether there is any real hope of being reunited with his mother. A great read and Luca’s best book to date.
This is quite a change of style from Luca Veste and it is a superb read. Divided between England and America, it is tense and intriguing from the start. Part crime story and part action thriller, it tells the story of Sam, whose life is turned upside down when his father makes a confession on his death bed. Determined to uncover the truth, Sam travels to America and his life is immediately in danger. Brilliant!
Initial thoughts:
You know that you have enjoyed a story when you are torn between supporting a character and wanting to take them aside to talk about their behaviour! And that is precisely my reaction to the latest novel my Luca Veste.
The novel opens with a terrible car accident some decades ago, resulting in the deaths of all involved. And then we jump into the present a d meet Sam Cooper a young English man who is startled to receive a phone call alerting him that his father has been attacked and is now in hospital. Travelling to his old home town from London, Sam soon learns that the attack was not a random burglary and instead his father was the victim of a targeted attack. It's not long before Sam is also under attack and learns these attackers are looking for his mother. Except his mother died in a car accident some twenty years earlier. Or so they have always believed. Now Sam is returning to his mother's home, to track down his remaining relatives and try to discover the truth before he too is killed.
I found myself intrigued by the idea that Sam's mother could still be alive - how could she possibly have hidden for two decades? And why? Was her husband wrong all along?
It's difficult to say more without giving away key elements of the plot but I will say that there are characters that I did not like - more anti-heroes than typical heroes, I guess. And this works well as we sympathise more with Sam and his situation.
Definitely an enjoyable read and a thriller that will keep you guessing.
Sam Cooper leads a normal life. He lives in London and works in an office. One evening he receives a phonecall from his father, the father he's been estranged from for eighteen years. As Sam rushes to his fathers side he is flooded by memories. Sam is reminded that twenty-five years earlier the family car crashed into a river and his mother and younger brother didn't survive. From that moment on Sam's father retreated into himself.
When Sam gets to his father's side he discovers that his father has been brutally assaulted. With his dying breath he informs Sam that his mother is still alive. Full of doubt, Sam begins to investigate and uncovers the truth behind the accident and it's aftermath.
This is a roller coaster of a thriller that simply doesn't let up for a minute. The true definition of a page turner. The action begins in the UK but swiftly moves to America to allow for car chases and shootings.
Sam Cooper is a likeable character, he works in an office, he's not ex-military, secret service or a martial arts expert. It's because Sam is a normal person that makes him so likeable and you realise that he gets through a considerable number of situations by tenacity and sheer luck.
As the story progresses we are transported back almost 35 years to discover the origins of the villain and 25 years to understand why Sam believes his mother and brother died in a car crash. With lots of mis-direction the action doesn't let up until the final page.
This was a high action thriller with a large death toll which all stems from one man’s decades long obsession with his former fiancée. It took me a while to get into this, I found the characters and events a bit confusing to start however it started to make more sense after a while. I did find parts of this pushed credibility, there’s a limit as to how many times an average man can be beaten up and keep going however if you put that aside there’s a lot that will appeal to fans of more violent thrillers and plenty of warped characters. 7/10
A fantastic read by a great author, I was very grateful to receive an ARC of the latest Luca Veste. I was hooked from the start; the intrigue grabbed me and I was unable to put the book down. I cannot wait for more from Veste.
I was looking forward to this book but sadly I never connected with the characters or plot. This book was not for me.
I give a 2 star rating only because the book was not for me..
I WANT TO THANK NETGALLEY FOR THE OPPORTUNITY OF READING AN ADVANCED COPY OF THIS BOOK FOR AN HONEST REVIEW
3.5 stars
Well that was fun.
Fast paced, action packed and not without the odd surprise.
It takes obsession to whole new levels.
A read in one sitting and thoroughly enjoy it book.
Sam Cooper, an ordinary man, is summoned to the bedside of his estranged, dying father to be told that his mother, whom he believed drowned with his younger brother, is still alive. Subsequently, attempts are made on his life as he tries to make sense of what happened some 25 years previously and he struggles against his own doubts to uncover the truth. No one is as honest as they seem and he can rely only on himself.
This is a rip-roaring and, at times, touching thriller from a writer who has been very favourably compared to Harlan Coben and Linwood Barclay. Praise indeed and rightly so. The heart pumping action moves between England and the USA and abates only briefly to allow the readers to catch their breathe.
The book is beautifully written and a must for everyone who enjoys high octane thrills.
This book was brilliant. It really kept me on my toes and I was itching to get back to it whenever I had the chance!
I went through all the emotions with the characters and really felt invested.
