THE ITALIAN GIRL'S SECRET by NATALIE MEG EVANS is a WW11 novel that takes place in Italy in 1943, in and around Naples. The book is well written and exciting. We get a real feel for what the characters are going through during this volatile and dangerous time. The author has obviously done a great deal of research into this period of history.
When Carmela del Bosco;s half brother Danielo Vincenzo, a partisan fighter, brings a badly wounded comrade, Sebastiano Alonso, to la Casale, the farm where she lives and works with her grandmother, and asks her to hide him, her life is never the same again.
Carmelo is forced to leave the village of Santa Maria della Vedetta when her two Nazi supporter cousins take over the farm. She goes to Naples to her father;s palazzo. She is surprised to find Sebastiano there, apparently well known by her father.
I like Carmela's devotion to her Nonna,to her dog Renzo and to their donkey Nearco.
I am not going to tell you any more as I do not want to spoil things for you. It is a really great read and one that you will not be able to put down until you get to the very last page!
I was given a free copy of the book by NetGalley from Bookouture. The opinions in this review are completely my own.
