Barbara, aged 60 looks back on her life, mainly in respect of her relationship with her father, who had been largely absent from her life. He had an imagined life in Miami designing famous buildings, while Barbara and her mum and brother lived in relative poverty in the Bronx. Or that’s what Barbara thought. He appeared from time to time to take them out for dinner, then disappeared again. As Barbara grows up she becomes more detached from him but her curiosity about his life remains. This is an intense, beautifully written book.

Interesting story which should make us all rethink what we know about others, even those close to us. What we remember from a child isn't always what happened and what is true.
