Due to a sudden, unexpected passing in the family a few years ago and another more recently and my subsequent (mental) health issues stemming from that, I was unable to download this book in time to review it before it was archived as I did not visit this site for several years after the bereavements. This meant I didn't read or venture onto netgalley for years as not only did it remind me of that person as they shared my passion for reading, but I also struggled to maintain interest in anything due to overwhelming depression. I was therefore unable to download this title in time and so I couldn't give a review as it wasn't successfully acquired before it was archived. The second issue that has happened with some of my other books is that I had them downloaded to one particular device and said device is now defunct, so I have no access to those books anymore, sadly.
This means I can't leave an accurate reflection of my feelings towards the book as I am unable to read it now and so I am leaving a message of explanation instead. I am now back to reading and reviewing full time as once considerable time had passed I have found that books have been helping me significantly in terms of my mindset and mental health - this was after having no interest in anything for quite a number of years after the passings. Anything requested and approved will be read and a review written and posted to Amazon (where I am a Hall of Famer & Top Reviewer), Goodreads (where I have several thousand friends and the same amount who follow my reviews) and Waterstones (or Barnes & Noble if the publisher is American based). Thank you for the opportunity and apologies for the inconvenience.
Having not been afford the same opportunities as her bother, Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s mother was determined to make sure that her own daughter was given every opportunity to succeed in life. And Ruth was damn sure that she would not let her mother down. Driven by an unfair system that treated men and women differently, Ruth’s passion for equal citizens with equal rights burnt bright. And with knowledge of the constitution and a clear sense of purpose, Ruth was unstoppable…
This wasn’t the first time that I was picking up one of the fabulous Little People, Big Dreams titles without having a great deal of knowledge about the person. With Maria Isabel Sánchez Vegara I was in safe hands as she expertly distils a wonderful and important life into a child-friendly biography that informed and educated this adult reader, as it will any child that is fortunate enough to pick up this book.
Ruth Bader Ginsburg lived a long and important life that has left a lasting legacy. Best known for her service as a Supreme Court judge, she has become a much lauded public figure following her death in 2020. However, there’s much more to Ruth’s story and you need to go back several decades because she was making waves and demanding changes long before taking a seat in the highest court in the United States.
Her mother wanted her to be ‘her own independent self’ and Ruth more than lived up to this expectation. She excelled at everything she did - at university, as a law professor, as a judge of the Supreme Court - but her life was not without its struggles. Her mother died when she was young, gender inequality was rife and there were numerous obstacles to be overcome but Ruth was determined to fulfil a promise to her mother and true to her word she rose to the top. With a clear goal and focus, disappointments and tragedy can be overcome - important lessons for all children.
What I particularly love are some of the wonderful messages that come from Ruth’s story. Firstly, Ruth raised a family and had a successful career, yes girls, you can have both. Secondly, Ruth was friends with and had great respect for a fellow judge who she disagreed with - there is much to be said about having the ability to value someone else’s opinion whilst strongly disagreeing with it and then going out to the opera together.
It is a fabulous biography of an extraordinary women who was not afraid to stand up for what she believed in, who voiced her opinions and who consistently flourished in the face of adversity. I’m sure just reading this story will inspire some future legal practitioners who, like Bader Ginsburg, have things that they feel passionately about and want to fight for change.
The story is told in short and simple sentence and is delightfully illustrated with bright and bold artwork. At the back of the the book there is a short overview of her life which includes key facts and dates and a historical timeline featuring photographs.
With thanks to Maria Isabel Sánchez Vegara and Frances Lincoln Children’s Books for the copy that was received through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Recommended for 5+.
Love these books so much, so beautiful and so inspiring, so happy to see they’ve done one on Ruth Bader Ginsburg, she did so much for America and the World, the perfect role model for young women everywhere
Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for a free copy for an honest opinion
Another beautiful addition to this amazing collection. Bringing the life story of one of those most inspirational and pivotal legal minds to a younger generation with gorgeous illustrations.
My thanks to Quarto Group - Francis Lincoln Children’s Books for a temporary digital edition via NetGalley of ‘Ruth Bader Ginsburg’, written by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara and illustrated by Judit Orosz in exchange for an honest review.
This little picture book is No 66 in the publishers highly acclaimed ‘Little People, BIG DREAMS’ series of mini-biographies that serve to introduce young readers, aged 4-7, to the lives and works of people who have excelled in various fields. These include political figures, scientists, writers, artists, and the like via these books and educational games.
I continue to admire Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara’s skill in distilling the essence of a life - focusing upon the aspirations of early childhood and how these dreams were manifested in later life.
The late Ruth Bader Ginsburg lived a rich, long life and was dedicated to fighting gender discrimination. She eventually came to serve on the USA Supreme Court and became a much-loved public figure.
Of course, given the length of the books, these are intended as thumbnail sketches. Following the main text and a timeline with photographs there are suggestions for further reading, again appropriate for young readers.
Judit Orosz’s illustrations were sweet and quirky. For the most part she used a muted palette, stressing the quiet seriousness of her subject. Still, I loved how she shifted into brighter colours when she imagined Ruth and fellow Supreme Court judge, Antonin Scalia, attending the opera in 18th-century attire, complete with powdered wigs.
Again, this is a wonderful series and one that is certain to be of interest not only to parents but to educators and both school and public librarians.
Highly recommended.
This is another great addition to the Little People Big Dreams series, which we absolutely adore. The illustrations are appealing, and the text has a level of detail suitable for little ones. There were a few terms that required explanation, providing an opportunity to develop vocabulary. It was a bit too tricky in parts for my 6-year-old to read himself, so we ended up taking turns to read to each other.
Ruth Bader Ginsburg's fight against gender discrimination and for equal rights is inspirational. The book shows the value of independence, a good education, and hard work. Ruth earned a scholarship to Cornell University, where she stood up for the rights of female students and graduated as one of the top students in her class. She then took on groundbreaking cases to achieve equal rights, and became a professor. She was the second woman ever to be appointed to the Supreme Court. I particularly liked how the book highlighted the friendship between Antonin Scalia and Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who admired each other's work and enjoyed going to the opera together, despite disagreeing and ruling differently on major cases.
When my 8 year old daughter saw that new titles were being released by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara she was so excited to get the opportunity to review them. She has read all of the previous titles in our local bookshop and very much enjoys them. The author does a great job of providing facts about famous people past and present in a way that is interesting to children, informative and expands their knowledge of the world.
I would recommend these books for children aged 7-12 and would definitely give them 5 stars!!
WoW! Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara books must be one of the best little books to purchase for children, these are the best-selling series of books and educational games that explore the lives of outstanding people, from designers and artists to scientists and activists. All of them achieved incredible things, yet each began life as a child with a dream.
So, this latest book is about Ruth Bader Ginsburg mum taught Ruth to be a lady - which meant to be her own independent self. Ruth promised herself she would do everything her mother didn't get the chance to do. And she excelled: at university, as a law professor, and later on the supreme court fighting gender discrimination
It's one book, you should definitely buy for your little readers so they can learn about this law professor.
I am so glad these books are being published and I highly recommend all of these books
Many thanks to Quarto’s Frances Lincoln Children’s Books and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest reviewRuth Bader Ginsburg by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara
Yet another great book from a fantastic series of books!
Again, about someone who I am very much surprised I had never heard of but who actually played such a huge part in equal rights for women.
All explained in very easy to understand pages - great read, I love these books.
Disgraceful I know but I only actually heard of Ruth Bader Ginsburg after her death. I saw many of my American friends grieving for her and posting quotes about her and was intrigued. I quickly started to read up on this amazing lady! I love how these books make her story understandable to a new generation without being preachy or over complicating things. There's a couple of quotes in this book which really stuck with with me
"feminism isn't just about girls" YES!!! So few people understand this!!
"by making fair and equal laws for everyone, we can transform people's lives" - Ruth didn't just fight for the rights of women but POC, she believed in equality for EVERYONE.
I was really excited for 'Little People, Big Dreams' take on Ruth Bader Ginsburg and it didn't disappoint. This woman is such an inspiration. She gained power through hard work and a big focus on education, then used this power to do good. I especially loved the page about Antonin Scalia and Ruth's friendship, despite their differences and disagreements.
I love the diversity of the people featured in this series. Artists, athletes, authors, activists, explorers, entertainers, musicians, scientists and now a Supreme Court Justice.
These biographies are age appropriate; inspiring and interesting, but not overwhelming. They have bright, beautiful illustrations, striking covers, and look great on a shelf together.
Thank you NetGalley and Frances Lincoln Children's Books for the advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
I absolutely adore the Little People, Big Dreams series and this book, focusing on Ruth Bader Ginsburg, did not disappoint. Filled with glorious illustrations, these texts are a fabulous springboard for classroom discussion. I love how they cover such a broad range of famous faces, from scientists to musicians.
The story of Ruth Bader Ginsburg is an inspiring read of a girl who worked hard to achieve success and who worked equally hard to give back to those in need. It details the sorrows and hardships she faced in her youth and outlines her determination to make the world a fairer place for all, regardless of gender or ethnicity. Ruth is an incredibly inspirational figure, who worked hard to transform the lives of others through fighting for fair and equal laws for all.
I will be using this book as part of my Person of the Week work in a Year 5 classroom and think it would be a welcome addition to any school bookshelf. Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC.
My kids ADORE the Little People, Big Dreams books and we get so excited when there are new titles! I have to admit I love them too as there are fun facts for all of us to absorb! My youngest is a budding early reader and loves how accessible these books are. Neither of them had heard of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, but they are fierce believers in girls being just as capable of boys. As soon as they heard about Ruth's challenge for equality, they were fully alert! What a champion for young females; a powerful message for independence and equal rights. Exactly the role model to grow self confident young girls. This read definitely brought out the girl power in our household.
Ahhh - this series can literally do no wrong. I have read a lot of books from this series this year and they are all superb!!
This book is extra special. I feel it has a bit more detail than some of the other books in the series. I really liked getting to know more about this amazing woman.
Great human, and a great book that completely compliments her!
This was our second LPBD arc and another winner!
We love these books and their ability to teach children about important people in our history using beautiful illustrations and lovely story telling. @mariaisabelsanchezvegara has brought us another informative book, even teaching me a few things as although I knew of Ruth BG I didn't know much about her! Now I do, and it sound it sounds like, in my 7 year olds words, she was a really inspirational person!
This is another brilliant addition to this series – even as an adult I look out for the next book in the series being released!
I love the images in this series and this is a brilliant introduction to Ruth Bader Ginsburg who was so influential and someone I would love my four year old daughter to look up too. She really was an inspiration.
This series is an excellent introduction to some of the well-known, and less well-known characters that have had a great impact in our lives through a variety of subjects such as politics and social influences in this case justice and a lady who became one of the most iconic figures in US politics - she stood up for what she believed in, fought for racial and gender equality, and defended democratic values - I love the variety of people chosen in this series and Ruth more than deserves her story being shared.
It is 5 stars from me for this one – a delightful read and one I will be very highly recommending!
This is another interesting book from the Little People, Big Dreams series. In this book, I was intrigued to learn about the life of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who was a lawyer and politician in America who fought gender discrimination and racism in the supreme court. I enjoyed reading her story.
Many thanks to the author, publisher and Net Galley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This book about Ruth Bader Ginsburg which is part of the Little People Big Dreams series has beautiful illustrations and is about a female figurehead extremely relevant up until her recent passing. The colours are engaging and the text is short but informative, ideal for young minds wanting to learn whilst also being inspiring. It is diverse and engaging - I would look to buy for little ones in my life. I even learned things I didn't know and it makes you want to go away and learn more, it is extremely engaging.
Disclosure : Thank you to NetGalley for the opportunity to read in exchange for an honest review.
It often saddens me that I fail to grasp the significance of a person’s life until they have died. Ruth Ginsburg was someone I knew of in the Supreme Court of America but perhaps due to living and growing up in the U.K. I have no measure of her influence in wider terms.
This is one good reason one’s reading should be balance by historical works and biographical contributions.
For the reason this series is a champion as it brings to young readers important and often less familiar people.
With a clear narrative capturing the quality and drivers in someone’s life brilliantly re-enforced with marvellous illustrations. I just adore the artwork as a dominant colour palate is chosen which works throughout the drawings.
Ruth had so many opportunities for giving up on her dreams. She lost her Mother, her motivating force at a critical time of her life. A Mum who had been obedient to her own parent’s wishes to favour the son, requiring her to forego her own ambitions and earn a living to support her brother. So when her Mother died she re-doubled her efforts to succeed for both of them in what was still a “male dominated” profession.
Enthused by a love of the constitution and a passion for equality and a society free from discrimination.
I am always delighted to share these books from this series to encourage and inspire my grandchildren. I will continue to look out for new titles. Parents and guardians coming to these books will find a more in depth potted biography at the end of the story. Together with your little ones you can show the photos, these are real people and explore more about their lives and importance to the values we hold dear.
The story of Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s life is such a perfect fit for the Little People, Big Dreams series that it is actually surprising that it is not part of the series already. A great inspiring story with the brilliant illustrations we have come to expect from the series.
