Sometimes growing up is difficult, even when you're already an adult it's really hard to accept that things change. Effie is having a hard time dealing with her new family situation: her parents' divorce, her father's new relationship and the selling of the family home that she and her siblings grew up in. It symbolizes stability to her, and if that's gone, then she feels like she's floundering and that her solid foundation has been swept from beneath her. What's worse is that her family don't seem to understand how she feels and don't see her point of view.
Effie spirals out of control - the adult equivalent of stomping her foot - and inevitably is not invited to the final party that's being held in her much-loved home. But she needs to get inside because there's something very important that she's left there and she needs to retrieve it.
How she manages to get into the house on the night of the party turns into a comedy of errors that only Sophie Kinsella can conjure up! It's marvelous and moving. You'll laugh and cry and you'll love Effie just like I did!
The Party Crasher follows Effie who believes that her family is broken since her father and his new glamourous girlfriend decide to sell the family home. After not being invited to the "house cooling" party, Effie plans to sneak in and take back her Russian dolls, a task she imagined would only take a short amount of time. She ends ups., however, overhearing an array of conversations that mean she says a lot longer than expected.
One of my favourite bits about this books is how much the family relationships features within the plot as opposed to being romance heavy. Definitely up there with one of my favourite Sophie Kinsella books!
I could not get into this book at all. It just was to far fetched and nothing there to grasp my imagination.
I can only give it 2 stars as I could not finish it.
It took me a little time to get into The Party Crasher but once I did I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would. I found it slightly silly in places, particularly at the start and I really couldn't see how you could make a whole book about one particular night and a party. But once Effie got to the party I really enjoyed the funny parts and the relationships between some of the characters.
It's a really easy and gentle read without being boring but I did find it a little frustrating that the family members just hadn't talked to each other about anything that was bothering them but I guess the story wouldn't have been there if they had!
I found it a refreshing change to the Shopaholic series written by Sophie that I have read in the past and a nice, gentle read in between the thrillers I tend to choose to read now.
A slightly predictable but enjoyable, fun read.
If you like the Confessions of a shopaholic books then you'll love this! I LOL'd many many times while reading this latest book from Sophie Kinsella. It is not set in the world of shopaholic, this is a new novel with new characters. It is set at Christmas time and she writes so beautifully about the season in her beautiful descriptions of everything. It's funny, bubbly, heart warming and so sweet!
A gorgeous book, brilliantly written, I loved it! Perfect stocking filler for Sophie Kinsella fans!
I read this ARC for an honest review
All thoughts and opinions are mine
Love this author and was so pleased to be able to read this
Loved it - loved the way it was written - there is a warmth to this author's writing which makes the whole so accessible to a reader
A lovely read and highly recommend
I loved this! It was like a warm, comforting blanket on a winter's evening: easy to read, with accessible characters and a fun plot. It was occasionally a little silly, but the writing quality made up for that: I know first-hand what it feels like to be the adult child of divorcing parents and the upheaval that involves, coupled with the over-sharing that your parents are tempted to do because 'you're an adult and should be able to handle it...'. And Kinsella captures that so vividly and accurately, but also subtly too. Overall, a great read.
I have read quite a few of Sophie Kinsella’s books now and they never fail to disappoint. This was a really fun and entertaining read that has some great characters. Very well written as always. Would definitely recommend picking this one up.
Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book.
One of the best books I've read this year. Very well written and the author sure knows how to piece together a meaning behind words of a story.
I have read and loved all of Sophie Kinsella's books but I. have to admit the premise of this one didn't grab me originally. I just couldn't see how you could get a quality story from a girl upset by her parents divorce and selling their house breaking in to retrieve some Russian Dolls. How wrong I was. It did take a bit of time to warm up but in the end I totally devoured it and totally adored it, laughing out loud more than once! Great feel good reading.
Sophie Kinsella's books are a balm for the soul. Kind characters, ludicrous situations and happy endings with character development that feels satsfying. They are the Galaxy chocolate of books and The Party Crasher meets all these expectations - another pergect example of literary self-care!
A Sophie Kinsella book always puts a smile on my face, and this one certainly did.
Effie is finding it very difficult to accept her parents marriage is over, all the family are moving on - except her.
She doesn’t get on with her dad’s new girlfriend and when they sell the family home and throw a farewell party, Effie refuses to go.
But then she’s realises her precious Russian dolls are in the house and she has to get them out before the move is final.
Hiding behind bushes, under tables and in cupboards on her mission, she eavesdrops on secret conversations and comes to realises lots of things about her family as well as herself.
With thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this arc in exchange for an honest review.
One of my favourite authors so lucky to get this one! As usual a brilliant book, have recommended it to my Book Club! Well done.
Top notch rom-com from an author that never disappoints. As a summary, Effie's family home has been sold and there is a final farewell party. Effie has not been officially invited by her dads new girlfriend and nemesis. She plans to sneak in unseen anyway to retrieve a prized possession. But nothing goes to plan, and in between hiding and searching, she learns all sorts of secrets from her complicated family set-up. To spice it up, she is forced to enlist the help of her sexy ex-boyfriend. The entire book occurs over the 24 hours of the party and its amazing how much can change in such a short period of time.
The author has perfected walking the line of dealing with real topics but keeping it light and fun and entertaining. Her characters are always engaging and likeable, with witty repartee, and even the anti-heros have full arcs. I love her observations and the details she adds to make things real and authentic. I could not put this down and every page was a joy to read.
So very lucky to get a chance to read the new Sophie Kinsella and The Party Crasher doesn’t disappoint. Effie grew up in a happy family with her sister Bean and brother Gus her father and step mother Mimi. She had a happy childhood yet when an announcement is made just before Christmas Effie’s world comes crashing down and she starts to question things she took for granted.
Sophie Kinsella writes a perfectly funny, clumsy heroine in Effie with her quick wit and even quicker temper she jumps into everything with both feet and she is balanced by her calm, protective sister Bean . When their family is falling apart Effie crashes a party and hears and sees things that she can’t forget.can she mend her broken family as well as her love life?
A perfect stocking filler for Christmas
My thanks to NetGalley and Random House for a copy of “ Party Crasher” for an honest review.
My wish was definitely granted when I was invited to read the latest book by one of my favourite authors!
I’ve read all of Sophie Kinsella’s novels , and she has written consistently enjoyable , and entertaining , books that have been a joy to read.
In my job , as a librarian , Sophie Kinsella is an author that I’ve had no hesitation in recommending ,when asked for reading suggestions , and I’ve always had positive feedback.
“ Party Crasher “ had me hooked from the beginning, ,and Effie and family were really well written, believable characters.I loved the descriptions of the family home, and now I really want a kitchen with woodland painted panels !
One of my top reads of 2021
Where on earth does Sophie get her ideas from? Laugh. A minute. Had me laughing out loud throughout. A really, REALLY excellent read. First class!! Waiting for her next one already. She's a genius
Sophie Kinsella is a fab author & I really enjoyed this book. Highly recommended by me. Thanks for the opportunity to read and review this book.
'I've built up a business, turned off my mum's life-support machine and punched a shark in the face.' This, one of the later lines in the book, is also one of the spicier moments in this gentle comedy about growing up. Effie, the baby of a well-to-do family with a big house in the country, is completely freaked out and grieving when her parents divorce while she's in her mid-twenties. Her older siblings Gus and Bean aren't doing well either - none of them wanting to be ACOD (Adult Children of Divorce), they are all privately tortured by the idea that their idyllic childhood with their parents Tony and Mimi was a lie, though there's plenty of evidence that it wasn't. When Effie goes back to her childhood home to retrieve her Russian dolls, she finds herself not only hearing more than she'd bargained for but running into her old boyfriend, now a TV-famous doctor. She never understood why he wasn't waiting for her when she came back from New York - will now be the moment she finds out? Another great stand-alone from Sophie Kinsella, though I'm still hoping for a new Shopaholic novel with maybe a new Shopaholic baby! Thanks publishers, for granting my wish for this one!
There are not even words how much I love Sophia and her books! She is one of my absolute favorite authors and I wait with bated breath for a new book every year. I’ve been reading her ever since Shopaholic and of course her stand alone. She always manages to come up with a fresh and funny concept
Premise
Number One bestselling author Sophie Kinsella returns with an irresistible new standalone about family love, family tensions and what you might hear if they didn't know you were in the room . . .
The Talbots are having one last party at their family home.
But Effie hasn't been invited . . .
Effie's still not over her parents splitting up a year ago. Her dad and his new girlfriend are posting their PDAs all over Instagram - and no one should have to deal with photos of their dad with the hashtags #viagraworks and #sexinyoursixties. Now they're selling the beloved family home and holding a 'house-cooling' party. When Effie receives only a last-minute 'anti-invitation', she decides to give it a miss.
Until she remembers her precious Russian dolls, safely tucked away up a chimney. She'll have to go back for them - but not as a guest. She'll just creep in, grab the dolls and make a swift exit. No one will know she was ever there.
I love how this one really dealt with family dynamics. It had a bit more of a serious tone to it, but never what out any fun thrown in! It was so cute being set around a party! I absolutely absolutely loved it! Can’t wait for the next one! It can’t come soon enough
