This book is informative and detailed. My mouth was watering reading through the recipes.
I make curries but after reading this clearly mine are a poor attempt. There is so much more into the spicing and cooking.
I will definitely attempt to make some of these.
Highly recommend if you are a curry lover
Thanks NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book. Beautifully presented with a huge range of recipes that are easy to follow once you have stocked up your spice collection! So many new things to try out. Highly recommended.
Misty Ricardo's Curry Compendium is perfect for anyone who wants to start cooking BIR style food at home and is unsure of where to start. Everything is described in fantastic detail, from the basic ingredients and spices, to cookware, how to make the perfect base gravy, upscaling ingredients and techniques to make the dishes as authentic as possible.
I've been following Misty's Youtube channel and creating his recipes at home for a couple of years now and find the previous books to be indispensible. Unlike a lot of cookbooks that are mainly artfully shot images and not much else, this is full of amazing recipes and will explain all you need to know. I'd recommend this to everyone who is underwhelmed by supermarket alternatives to Indian takeaway food.
I can't wait to try some of the new recipes that aren't featured in the previous two books.
Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for the chance to review Misty Ricardo's Curry Compendium.
Great cookbook! I love Indian curry and I'm very excited to try these recipes. I usually order Butter Chicken or Chicken Tikka Masala but I'll try some of these other curries. The photos look pretty good and I can smell the curry from here! I received a free digital copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review
Curry Compendium is a great resource for those who wish to give Indian cooking a try. This book is largely influenced by British Indian Restaurants (the author is quick to note that a large portion of BIR are actually owned by Bangladeshis), so it may not be a totally authentic Indian food experience.
The book starts out with a great guide for gathering your supplies, including information about which spices you’ll want to stock your pantry cabinets with. The author also gives advice on picking the best vegetables and meats for your recipes. This part was helpful, but a bit tedious to read through. From there we get information on cooking supplies which was very thorough as well.
Finally - the recipes! The author gives great recipes for base gravies, spice mixes and other things you can cook in advance and store for later. Since most of the recipes I looked at seemed a bit more complex, precooking seems like a great way to save some time in the long run. I also enjoyed the photos that are splashed throughout the recipe section. The recipes shared cover everything from chicken dishes to curries to soups to lassis. There are also vegetarian options which is nice. Everything looked delicious and I cannot wait to try my first recipe.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a review copy. I can’t wait to get cooking!
This is a reference book for Indian curries, and I intend to use it as such, so a quick flick through the contents was enough to reassure me that this was a worthy addition to my shelf. I am not a newcomer to Indian cookery, but I did find some of the tips very helpful. Thank you to netgalley and the publishers for giving me a copy of this cookbook.
I received Curry Compendium as part of a NetGalley giveaway.
I'm a big fan of curry and Indian food in general, and living in an area with a large South Asian population, a lot of these foods and flavors are easily accessible to me. Being at home more often, it makes sense to experiment more with these types of recipes, so Curry Compendium caught my eye.
As the title suggests, Curry Compendium deals with British-influenced curry recipes. If you're looking for recipes that have more direct ties to India, you may want to look elsewhere. The beginning reviews many of the base ingredients and recipes needed for various curries, which is helpful for someone new to cooking them. There's a good number of recipes, and if you have an Asian or Indian grocery nearby, the spices called for or fairly easy to find. For people seeking to deepen their understanding of a particular cuisine, Curry Compendium gives plenty of options and tips.
Great book full of wonderful recipes that I can’t wait to try. I really forward to cooking delicious curries
