The Abberley Beach Murders by D.E White is the third book in the great Detective Dove Milson series and I really enjoyed it. especially as you can read this book as a standalone. This book has great characters and a great story line where Detective Milson Dove is the main character.
I would recommend this book.
Another instalment from the ‘Dove Milson’ series. I’ve loved every book in this series and this is no different. With twists and turns a plenty, as I have come to expect from this author, this will keep you guessing until the end.
From reading the other books in this series I already feel I know Dove and her team so fell straight into this one. What I love is how different each book is, you may have the common characters but each case is very different and takes them in different directions.
A great read that will keep you guessing.
This book is the third in the series but can be read as a standalone. This story has two timelines. A current case with a victim that is connected to a cold case. Told from dual POV - will Detective Dove Milson be able to discover the truth and solve the case(s)? This book was packed with action, the intrigue and mystery really held my interest to the very end! Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Strange but intriguing
This book starts with a police officer being attacked and then 4 bodies are found in a glass escape room under a pier in a story full of twists
This book is mainly set from Detective Dove Milson’s point of view and she is a character who I knew from very early on that I would like and as each new facet of her personality came through she became even more loveable to me
This book is in a series and I haven’t read the preceding books however I don’t think that stopped me from enjoying it. The storyline is unique and there is enough descriptions and information about the characters to enable the reader to become immersed into their world
The escape room murder idea was totally new to me and I think it worked so well in this book, making the story so absorbing that I wasn’t able to put it down. It was also the kind of mystery that kept me as a reader guessing and every time I decided in my head who had committed the crimes, something would happen and my idea would be thrown out. It kept me on my toes, full of constant changes of direction with an ending that pulled all the strings together which I totally adored
I would recommend this book to those who enjoy a detective story full of twists that will keep you guessing right up until the end
This was an enjoyable read but I was not as gripped as I am with other police procedurals. It was a decent read
Dove Milson finds herself with one of great most gruesome crime scenes she's come across. Four people are found dead in an escape room on the beach. They look like they've drowned but Dove and her suspect foul play. Plus she is convinced someone is following her, but with lack of sleep and worry for her niece she can't be sure of anything.
I really like this series, I, use admit this isn't my favourite but I enjoyed it, the last one was so intense I felt I was waiting for this one to get a bit more crazy however it doesn't not until the final chapters. I kust admit I didn't guess who ye killer was and as it ran along side extracts of diary entries of a girl in a coma I wanted to work out the link. So when it ties together it was an omg moment I must say.
I love Doge as our protagonist, she still loves the sea as she has throughout. Her work schedule is conflicting with her paramedic finance so with a wedding to plan that isn't working well. Plus she finds herself with her niece on her dofa and as she's acting very shady she is trying to get to the bottom of that, worrying she is working with the pedophile catchers ring. I suppose the one thing I found is that this book was a bit slow going but once it got going I was hooked.
The concept of an escape room murders on a beach was crazy, literally they needed to escape. I also like the idea of an escape room on a beach but after reading this I'm likely to have one a miss. Where the case gets really interesting ghe people durrondinb these people are in danger also Plus there's a question why we're their partners sneaking out in the middle of the night?
In conclusion I found this to be an interesting crime thriller. I wish there was a bit more drama at the beginning of the book but the second half made up for it. Rate 3 stars and look forward to more in the series.
Thank you netgally the publishers and D.E White for the ARC in exchange for me fair and honest opinions
Having read the first two books in the Dove Milson series, I was looking forward to the third installment and it did not disappoint. The unique setting was imaginative and the overlapping storylines all come full circle by the ending.
This book certainly keeps you on your toes right from the start and I savoured every chapter of it. A special ending with perfect final scenes, Dove Milson's third outing is just brilliant! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
A fantastic thriller
Will have you hooked from the start
Plenty of twists
A ending i didn’t see coming
Thanks NetGalley
This is an unusual crime. Four people went to use a room that is under the water. Four people died when the water filled the rooom.
Joffe Books and Net Galley let me read this book for review (thank you). It has been published and you can gt a copy now.
There was another murder years ago that might be related to this one. And then a more recent murder pops up. Could they hav a srial killer?
It's an in depth investigation and the suspects change. But they don't give up. And, in the end, the truth comes out.
It's a bit scary and the killer is hard to make talk but they do get at the truth.
An enjoyable read with plenty going on. Finished in one sitting.
Thank you NetGalley and to the publisher for allowing me to read this in exchange for an honest review.
An intriguing story and a brilliant read!
Daisy White has delighted me with this clever and gripping crime thriller and I was not in the least disappointed with this superb, briskly-paced tale. Detective Dove Milson has been attacked at Claw Beach and is in A&E but is being released with stitches to her cuts, and a few bruises. At 4.40 the next morning she gets a call from DS Steve Parker to attend an incident on the pier along with others from the Major Crimes Team. Four bodies have been found at the Beach Escape Rooms owned by Jamie Delaney and Caz Liffey. The deaths look like drownings and there are signs of a break-in.
I warmed to protagonist Dove in the first novel of this compelling series, Glass Dolls and also from very early on in this novel, The Abberley Beach Murders and I was rooting for her throughout the story. The deft and masterful writing skills of D.E. White anchored the storyline solidly in reality and the plot itself was very believable. The Abberley Beach Murders was so full of drama and suspense that it had my heart racing. Daisy White gave the reader a mixture of excellent characters with some great interaction, contributing to the strength of the narrative.
The book was a commanding read and the author’s talent made this a wonderful story that I thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated for the entertainment it was. The ending was something of a surprise to me as I did not anticipate the conclusion. This is a little gem and a book that I'm so pleased to have read.
I received a complimentary digital copy of this novel at my request from Joffe via NetGalley. This review is my own unbiased opinion.
Dove Milson and team have a strange murder to investigate this time - four bodies in an "escape room". This was flooded deliberately and there were certainly "goings-on" going on in there - seemed to be a sexy romp between individuals without knowledge of their partners, but that went wrong. Dove is also attacked when she tries to help an individual being robbed; one of her sisters is seriously attacked (again) and her niece is worried about being attacked. Add to that a young gymnast who "fell" off a cliff and has remained in a coma for the last 5 years, this is a complicated set of bylines which, mostly, do tie together eventually. Plenty of twisted minds, revenge, twists and turns. It doesn't matter that this is the third in the series other than the previous ones explain Dove's background, but some of the two sisters' backstories do get a bit repetitive if you have read the previous stories. Thanks to NetGalley and Joffe Books for an advance copy in exchange for my honest review.
A detective book with lots going on . There are several stories running through this book which makes it a complicated, though interesting and realistic read. This is how I imagine life as a detective can be, with lots going on, often little sleep and seemingly at times getting nowhere. I can imagine that, as Dove does, you get feelings that something is off . The negative and positive reactions to the police from the public are also well documented.
Little by little the evidence is gathered and what has happened becomes clear. Lots of twists and turns in the story, though no real suspense. I liked the characters and the location in an English seaside town makes for a good backdrop.
This book is part of a series, but I read it as a stand alone and that was fine.

What a tangled web of murders and suspects lies between these pages. I struggled at times to follow the plot, it gripped me then it didn't. I felt at every turn the answer would lie on the next page, but it didn't. It seemed to take me an age to get through the 51 chapters. No indication until nearly the conclusion of the abuse Mickey was subjected too. I feel it was added rather than weaved into the story. I read the author D E White found this a tough book to write. I can understand why, I would have liked a suspects map to move string along so I could better understand how all the relevant connections Dove and Steve found fitted together.
This is the first book I have read of D E White so to be fair I did start in the middle of the detective series and had never met the characters before.
This is third in a series. I've never read the others, but this does feel like it could stand alone.
The plot was detailed but it was a bit challenging to stay engaged and follow at times. Multiple tangents pulled me out of the story. The mystery and conclusion were okay. This was just "meh" for me overall.
So…I have to be completely honest. I’m surprised at myself for writing a fair review. There I was, sitting 60% into the book thinking to myself “when is the story going to get good?” I’m very glad I stuck with it, because the ending turned out to be heartbreaking and it redeemed the poor writing for me.
We started right out of the gate with pretty much the entire description. I wasn’t too worried about how the rest of the book would pan out, as I’ve read a few other books that go through the entire description within the first 20 pages. This one, however, hit the ground running and then just stopped moving forward. If you want to read about the most boring and mundane tasks that any given police officer does in a day, here’s the book for you! Maybe it’s just a cultural difference and it’s not as action packed as it is over here in the United States, but I was so bored for 75% of the book. I really didn’t care much for the daily briefings or the lunches or just the in-between-detective-work down time that was featured.
I was also confused for 85% of the book. There were FAR too many throw away characters that played an important role but also were useless in the end. Just the casual mentioning of “that guy I saw on the boardwalk a week ago” but it’s also important that the reader remember his name because he will be mentioned 10 chapters from now but he makes no impact in the end. Not my style of writing. If I need to take notes on characters because they aren’t developed enough to naturally know who they are, then I have a real big issue. The main characters, on the other hand, were well written! Adding to my confusion was a random unnamed narrator that would have a short chapter and then we would return to Dove’s POV. It seemed like the narrator would change every so often and honestly didn’t add anything of value until just about the very end of the book. Maybe if I wasn’t so confused about who was talking or who someone was, it would have been obvious who was speaking. It just didn’t click with me, unfortunately.
I give The Abberley Beach Murders 3.75 stars, rounded up to 4. The ending was heartbreaking for me. What seemed to be a standard “whodunit” evolved into something far deeper and tragic, and redeemed the boredom I endured. Also, kudos to the immersive escape room idea! I wonder if that’s a real thing, and if so, I need to go experience that! I also gave a quarter of a star for the glossary at the end of the book. If only I had known this little gem existed while I was reading! I now know what a shingle beach is, what brown sauce consists of, and why they called them chocolate digestives!
Many thanks for the advance digital copy of this book from Netgalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review!
This is the third story now in this excellent series and DC Dove Milson is still working in the Major Crimes Team in Abberley under DI Jon Blackman and DCI Kevin Franklin with longstanding partner DS Steve Parker who is loving life with baby Grace. Dove herself is now happily living with fiancé paramedic Quinn after finally getting over the dreadful events she experienced while working as a confidential informant handler. Her younger sister Gaia now has two successful strip clubs and older sister Ren still runs her coffee shop with the help of both daughters Eden and Delta who are all together again with Eden’s young son Elan. They are gradually getting their lives back on track after the devastating events of a year ago. It’s nice to see other old faces back as well, such as Dove’s friend Crime Scene Manager Jess and DS Lindsey Allerton. The story kicks off in sweltering summer temperatures with Dove walking back from Claw Beach to her car after surfing to find herself rescuing a man getting severely beaten by two assailants, and getting attacked herself in the process. The victim is a local solicitor and is very reticent about why he was there. Was it a carjacking, a mugging or something much worse? That same night two men and two women meet their death in a glass Escape Room, a new and popular tourist attraction, under the pier at Abberley Beach. After a break in, they apparently all drowned when the room was sabotaged but why were they even there? Two teams are quickly assembled at MCT to undertake what looks like being a huge investigation with lots of potential suspects and the victims are identified, seemingly having little in common. Could there be a link to the attack that Dove foiled? Gradually secrets are unearthed and connections are made between the four people. The detectives also discover that one of the victims has a link to the attack on a 14 year old budding Olympic gymnast, Mickey Delaney, who has been in a coma for the past five years after being badly beaten and left in a disused quarry and who is the sister of the escape rooms’ owner Jamie. With three strands running through the story, that of four murders, the unsolved attack on Mickey Delaney and a spate of violent muggings, the police have plenty to work on as things get a bit too close to home for some. As the body count increases and with the chapters interspersed with a narrative from someone who clearly has an axe to grind, this makes for a gripping and completely engrossing read from start to finish.
As I have come to expect from this series, there’s a glorious mass of bizarre deaths and twisted histories and secrets, and a wealth of puzzling clues laid out by the author in a wonderful dark plot that kept me hooked and guessing all the way through. With great characters, easy to get to know and already well introduced in the first two books, this is an extremely well told story which I can highly recommend. I can’t wait for the next three proposed books in this series. 5*
After being attacked while trying to break up an assault in a beach carpark Detective Dove Milsom is taken to A&E then released with cuts and bruises. Shortly after she is called in to work by her partner DS Steve Parker on the Major Crimes Team o go to a crime scene on the pier. where 4 bodies are found in a flooded escape room owned by Jamie Delaney and Caz Liffey.
As Dove gets deeper into the investigation she finds that one of the dead was previously suspected of being involved in a cold case when gymnast Mickey Delaney's body was found at an abandoned quarry leaving her in a coma for the last five years. Are the cases connected Dove is not sure.
A great read with many twists that keep you guessing until the end.
