I could have read this book in one sitting if life wasn't getting in the way. I thoroughly enjoyed it. The writing style flows and makes the entire story easy to read. I was fascinated by the case itself and how certain clues were out there for the reader to just pick. I guessed who was the killer but this didn't actually put me off reading
.
I had to keep going because I wanted to know how the murderer will get caught. I wanted to find out what will happen with Chloe and how her life will go on after so much suffering
.
This is definitely one great debut novel and I am looking forward to reading more from the author

This was a great fast paced, gripping thriller. The start was relatively slow but as soon as I hit 20% I just had to know what was going on and finished it in one sitting. The writing is straight and to the point which was perfect for the pace of the book. I loved Chloe as a character and enjoyed the look into the psychology of trauma that this book provided, she isn't always 100% put together she is on a journey dealing with her trauma and she can have the dips in that journey. The red herrings were very well done and I loved the twist at the end that pulled the rug out from under me in a very clever way. I think if you like Nicci French's books then you will enjoy this one and can't wait to read more by Stacy Willingham.

I really enjoyed this book. I was somewhat exasperated by the main character, but if she didn’t behave the way she did, the story wouldn’t have unfolded so I completely understand. I love a book that surprises you, and this one certainly did. Well written, with a good plot, I recommend this book. Thank you #netgalley

A great easy to read story that started a little slow.
There were twists and turns that I didn’t see coming
A dark thriller

Will definitely read more by this author

A sultry, dark and twisted psychological thriller. The premise of copy cat killings has been done before and this was a competent take on the theme. I found the narrative a little slow and faster pacing would have enhanced the storytelling

I was sceptical at first as the story took a little while to get going, a 'slow burn' if you will, but I can honestly say it's worth pushing through those first few chapters.

What seems like a quite cut and dried case, Chloe's Dad was convicted and jailed.. Well, without dropping any spoilers there are a myriad of twists and turns designed to borderline gasslight the reader and throw them way off the scent.

It turned out to be quite the impressive book, but I think many wouldn't have made it through to the 'good stuff', too much scene setting, not enough exposition in my opinion.

Chloe Davis appears to the world to be a successful, thirty-two-year-old psychologist in private practice, engaged to be married to a handsome, charismatic pharmaceutical rep. But she maintains this persona on a diet of alcohol and Xanax because, when she was twelve, her father was arrested and jailed for murdering a series of young girl, who had been friends or acquaintances of her in the small town where the family lived. Consequently, her mother had tried to hang herself and as a result is now tetraplegic, while her brother, who was fifteen at the time of the murders, seems to have difficulty in sustaining long term relationships. It is now the twentieth anniversary of the killings and she is contacted by a reporter who wants to do an article about the effects they had on the families affected, including her own, which she initially rejects. But then a young girl connected to her is murdered, and then another. She tries to persuade the police of a possible perpetrator but is ignored and so starts her own investigation, following the reporter’s suggestion that a possible copy-cat has started operating.
The story initially seemed a bit overwritten (or under edited) but suddenly picked up speed about halfway through as the plot began to unfurl. Once in this groove it bowled along fairly efficiently, there were a couple of nice twists and herrings that were dark pink rather than deep red. The resolution is satisfactory and will reward you if you can persist through the slowish start.
I would like to thank NetGalley, the publishers and the author for providing me with a draft proof copy for the purpose of this review.

Chloe has tried to escape her past for the last twenty years, her father was responsible for the murder of six teenage girls one frightful summer.

Now twenty years later history appears to be repeating itself. Two young girls have gone missing from Chloe’s hometown, one of which is a patient of hers.

An interesting story of a damaged young woman who has struggled with the horror of what her father did and who the past has come back round.

I thought I knew who the killer was going to be halfway through, however the twist on this took me by surprise.

A good tale well told, as all of Stacey Willinghams work is. Series killers, past and present. A good page turner, but like some other reviewers slightly disappointed in the ending, even if it was realistic

Two time frames twenty years apart. A twelve year old girl traumatised by the events of a serial killer found to be a member of her family. Twenty years later, our protagonist struggles to move on from childhood memories, shame, guilt and fear. Drink, drugs and inability to trust anyone results in a successful career , a new partner and future happiness spiralling out of control towards a catastrophic disaster exacerbated by post traumatic stress disorder. An excellent murder mystery with a conclusion as surprising and unexpected as the past and present crimes are revealed in all their heartbreaking intensity. Rather than a happy ever after ending the author has taken the brave decision to deliver a truthful yet complicated and realistic resolution and outcome for our protagonist. A well written and superbly drafted storyline weaving characters through their early and later years in such intimate detail that the reader feels their fear and mistrust whilst struggling to avoid racing through the many entangled details towards the final denouement. An unexpected five star story that made compelling reading. Many thanks to author, publisher and NetGalley for this ARC.

When Chloe was 12-years old, six teenage girls disappeared from the small town in Louisiana that she lived in. Their bodies were never found but Chloe’s father was convicted of their murders. He has been in prison for the last two decades.
With the twentieth anniversary fast approaching, once more teenage girls are disappearing. Everything seems the same as before but this time the bodies are found and they all link back to Chloe.
I enjoyed this book and I found it really easy to read. A page turner. This book had a five star written all over it… until the end. There is a twist, a good twist but I just felt that the way it was discovered was a bit convenient. For me it felt like the author didn’t really explain how Chloe knew what she knew so I found that disappointing.
Once again I would like to thank the publisher and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This was a solid thriller that I read in about a day. I really enjoyed the flashbacks to the main characters past, especially concerning her father. I found the present storyline a little less enjoyable and the ending was a bit flat as I felt it had been leading to something a bit more climactic.

What a freaking DEBUT!

Stacy Willingham’s debut novel A Flicker In The Dark has already captured the attention of all and sundry with all the right noises including a TV show in the making and phew I thought my mile-high expectations would itself spoil the fun but OH MY, what an absolute WOWZER this turned out to be…

There are many psychological thrillers in the market currently but to write one that causes whiplash in the reader with breathtaking twists adding to the thrill and especially seeing that it is just the first novel by the author I think Stacy Wellingham has firmly established her calibre.

The story does have the tried and tested formula of a broken heroine, but not completely an unreliable narrator. Chole is more or less a walking pharmacy popping pills to keep herself moving forward after the trauma that has destroyed her family but thankfully not that far gone into la la land where she questions her sanity. The author’s writing is fantastic, there is an eerie sense of impending doom and also a kind of emotional mayhem as Chole senses a déjà vu of events repeating in her life. The story is peppered with red herrings, honestly, I went about suspecting every single character in the novel and each time, the author brings forth another shocking surprise that had me reeling.

The story being narrated thru Chole’s POV plays out like a TV show, each event causing an exciting reveal and it is fairly easy to guess why this story would appeal as a series on screen.

Riveting and utterly gripping, A Flicker In The Dark is a must-read for fans of thrillers.

Many thanks to NetGalley, HarperCollins, and the author for a chance to read and review this book. All opinions are expressed voluntarily.

An edge of your seat page turner thriller that reeled me in early on and kept me curious all the way to the end with a cracking twists along the way. I found this book took over my routine for a couple of days as it was difficult to put down. A thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining debut publications. Here's to many more from this author.

Chloe has lived with the fact that her father iss a convicted serial killer. Her mother was unable to cope and so she and her brother, Cooper, have supported each other. She's now a psychologist and about to marry her fiancé, Daniel. But she lives with an unease, feeling that she's being watched.
This story follows a familiar psychological drama story line. Twists, turns, red herrings. I didn't quite guess whodunit but it was nicely set up.
Worth a read.

This is one of those books that everyone was talking about and I couldn't wait to read. While it was good, for me it didn't quite live up to the hype.
Maybe it's because I read A LOT of thrillers but I found it a bit clunky in how it was trying to point the finger at certain characters, at the same time, I read this with a few friends, and quite a few of us guessed who it was and how it would end.
With that being said, it was an enjoyable read and well written, especially considering it is a debut novel.
