Wow! What a book. It was fantastic! I thoroughly enjoyed it, and it gave me one of those book hangovers you get where you can't start another book for a couple of days (I usually dive right in).
The Perfect Twin is Sarah Bonner's debut novel, and the writing is excellent. I was completely drawn into the book from the very first pages, and there was no slowing down. A truly great psychological thriller, the twists were amazing and even made me gasp, though they weren't too off the scale to be unbelievable. Very cleverly worked, with lots of research obviously having been done.
On the whole the book is told from the point of view of Megan, the gentle, softer twin, who accidentally ends up murdering her twin sister! It's also told from the point of view of her manipulative husband Chris and said sister, Leah, in various parts.
I immediately liked Megan, and rooted for her throughout the book. The way the twin relationship was played out in the novel was very clever. It focused on things I hadn't imagined or thought about with regards to twins, and how it may be possible to get away with murder, and this made it really intriguing and all the more engaging.
I have to say that this is the first book I have read that was based in Lockdown, I know there's been some controversy about whether books should be written involving the pandemic, however this book is focused on the lockdown itself, rather than covid, and it works very well for the plot of the book.
My only bug bear is that the ending was quite abrupt. I could have kept reading for the length of another whole book!
Thank you to Netgalley and Hodder & Stoughton for a copy of the book in return for an open and honest review. All thoughts are my own.
Oh my gosh this is such a hugely exciting thriller that I cannot recommend highly enough. I was gripped and riveted and honestly anyone who tried to get me to do anything but read this book over the last few days has been ignored (sorry family!).
The book tells us the tale of a set of twins - Megan and Leah. Megan's husband Chris is a piece of work, he is controlling and basically a nightmare to live with, meanwhile Leah just has it all. When Megan finds a picture of Leah on Chris's phone, things really kick off. I don't want to give any spoilers but my gosh the twists and turns!
I also loved the way the novel also featured the pandemic, which I felt was cleverly worked into the narrative.
Just 5 stars!
This was a very disturbing but good read.
Thoroughly enjoyed from start to finish and could not get enough of.
This is a must read for anyone who enjoys a good thriller!!
Absolutely loved the characters, the plot, the tension - impossible to put it down.
Certainly recommended!
A good book
It is told from different point of views
Plenty of good twists
I would recommend this book
Thanks NetGalley
This was a fabulous twist turning read, just perfect!
Definitely want to read more by this author in the future.
Her Perfect Twin was a good read. It had twists and turns keeping me engaged through to the end. I was behind Megan all the way even though she murdered her twin…I wanted Chris to pay!
Wow! This book was absolutely fantastic! I could not put it down. The storyline captivated me right from the start.
Sarah's style of writing is addictive and I cannot wait to see what she comes up with next!
Thank you to Sarah Bonner, NetGalley and Hodder & Stoughton for the opportunity to read and review this book.
Gripping and very fast paced. The characters were so interesting to read and I just couldn't put the book down. This is a debut novel? You sure?
I quickly was drawn into the storyline and found the characters interesting but later I did find it becoming a bit complicated as to who was who
Nonetheless an interesting unusual read
So many twists in this novel! It had me in the first half, and really kept me guessing right to the end. Far from being just a regular identity switch story, I loved the added element of navigating a double life during lockdown. There was also the exploration of what identical twins share and what they don't, much of which I'd never really thought of. I'd definitely recommend!
*review edited because it previously was pure sleep deprived gibberish, which made no sense since I'd been up all night reading the book lol*
I love books that have adapted to the current climate and include the pandemic and lockdown in the storyline. It makes it all the more relatable and the characters seem all the more real. This is exactly how the world was at the start of the pandemic and it does lead to the question of how it would change things if you had bn in that situation at that time.
That aside, this book definitely had me hooked from page 1. Its one of those that gets under you skin and has you racing through pages to get to the end to figure everything out. I absolutely loved the plot and i was obsessed with the characters.
The story is narrated in a really interesting way aswell. Its almost like the main character is talking to the reader as she explains what went on. Once or twice when she does directly address the reader, it gave me "you" vibes, (like the tv series.) Its such a complex constructed web of lies and plot twists that you honestly wont be able to put it down. I stayed up the entire night to keep reading and once id finished, i was so exhausted that the initial review was complete gibberish but i just could not stop reading!! Even when i was about to fall asleep lol.
The only thing I'd say I found really disappointing was the fact that the author doesn't have a back catalogue for me to binge because from now on, after reading this one, I will be seeking out everything Sarah Bonner writes. When the blurb said this was a must read book, they weren't lying. It's an absolute masterpiece and a sheer delight to read
The plot, the pace, the characters, the narration, it's all just worlds apart from 99%of other books. Whether you're curling up with a blanket on a dark evening or lounging in the sun, this book is the perfect companion. Its sheer perfection in kindle form.
This was a finish-in-a-weekend read! True there were moments when one had to suspend disbelief but it moves at a great pace and one is invested in the outcome for some very unlikeable but intriguing characters. Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC.
A twisty thriller full of jealousy, revenge and hate
Identical twin sisters,
A cheating husband,
A murder,
Lockdown
Can they get away with it?
Any book with perfect in the title means the subjects are anything but that, and the characters in Her Perfect Twin are no exception!
Sarah Bonner's debut was good, and well paced. I enjoyed the start, which really hooked me in, and there certainly were some jaw dropping twists! It was an intense, rollercoaster of a book filled with drama and conflict. The author did well at ramping up my anxiety, and also depicted those early days of Covid19 well.
Although I enjoyed this psychological thriller, I am in the minority though, it didn't blow me away, and I didn't completely love it. This was due to a few reasons:
• I didn't actually like ANY of the characters.
• I hated the change of POV in the second part of the book. It really jarred me, and although I'm aware it was probably meant to stir up feelings of anger and disgust, I detested the abuse, gaslighting and hateful, toxic relationships.
• I thought I was ready for another book set in the times of Covid and lockdown, but I really wasn't!
• The story was pretty implausible and unbelievable at times, with a few plot holes.
The ending did make me say wait whaaat?! And some of the twists shocked me!
It was a solid debut, and I would recommend if you are looking for a dark, twisted, yet easy read. Just don't look or think too hard about the plot! Many others have really enjoyed it!
I love any book which involves twins and I was instantly gripped, what a start!.
This is exactly how psychological thrillers should be, fast paced and keeping you guess with that many twists, you haven’t a clue what to be thinking 😂👏🏻
I loved the different POV’s and seeing exactly how each of the characters were all interacting or messing with each other! The Shed is especially shocking and I love that the book involved the start of lockdown.
A cleverly written, dark debut which I highly recommend. Thank you to @hodderstoughton and @netgalley for my #advancedreadercopy
I freaking loooooved this book!!! I could not stop reading! I loved the multiple first person characters. I loved holding my breath not knowing what would happen next! I literally giggled after I gasped with the multiple WTF moments because I love those so much! And that endingggg!!! I did not predict it at all! I was so nervous that I wouldn’t like the ending but Bonner pulled through and gave me the most perfect ending EVER!
This is fantastic! The storyline and writing are all so beautiful. Well executed and I have read a lot of thrillers but this one I could not get it just kept twisting and twisting wow wow wow
My Perfect Twin by Sarah Bonner
Synopsis-
When Megan discovers photographs of her estranged identical twin sister on her husband's phone, she wants answers.
Leah already has everything Megan has ever wanted. Fame, fortune, freedom to do what she wants. And when Megan confronts Leah, an argument turns to murder.
The only way Megan can get away with killing her twin is to become her.
But then lockdown hits. How can she continue living two lives? And what happens if someone else knows her secret too?
My thoughts-
I was totally gripped by this book from the first few pages. It was such a fast paced psycholgical thriller. Just as I thought I'd worked out what was happening there was another massive twist in the story.
I loved reading from the points of view of the four main characters which were so brilliantly written. I was desperately rooting for Megan despite the fact she was effectively then going to 'get away with murder!'
It was particularly interesting to get a glimpse inside the twisted head of Megan's husband Chris. The timing of the covid lockdown fitted perfectly and really gave the book an additional terrifying element to the storyline.
A cleverly written tense, dark thriller that I would highly recommend.
Thank you to Netgalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
I'm so sad that I didn't enjoy this book more. The plot sounded so interesting but unfortunately, it wasn't for me in the end.
The beginning was so fast-paced and super rushed. It throws you straight into the story and I felt like I was having to roll with it and just accept how quickly Megan decides the only way to get away with murder is to start impersonating her twin.
While the first half was somewhat entertaining, the second half made me angry. Trigger warnings for gaslighting and emotional abuse.
There were some interesting twists but overall this felt like a very average domestic thriller.
Thank you to Netgalley, Hodder & Stoughton and Sarah Bonner for an ARC in return for an honest review.
WOW, WOW, WOW! What a book! This is a perfect thriller. It is also set in COVID-lockdown times which gives a unique twist. This is sheer perfection. It is the first book by Sarah Bonner that I have read and it certainly won't be the last.
Her Perfect Twin by Sarah Bonner is such a clever psychological thriller, it will certainly keep you guessing.
Identical twins Megan and Leah had a complicated relationship that had them estranged for years, following a pretty dysfunctional childhood.
Leah has always got the better of Megan, and when Megan finds a photo of Leah on her husband’s phone she decides to confront her twin, a confrontation that leads to murder. What happens next will keep you firmly on the edge of your seat. Sorry, no spoilers!
I loved the use of twins in this story, I think there is often a belief that twins are generally close to one another, but that is not always the case and clearly Megan and Leah had been particularly competitive with one another. This was a very twisty story, and every time I thought I could see where it was going, I found it went in a direction I had not even considered.
I’m not generally a fan of stories that include the Covid-19 pandemic, but I actually thought the use of the lockdown was an inspired decision by the author and definitely helped to ramp up the tension.
This was an exceptional rollercoaster of a thriller, and an outstanding debut by Sarah Bonner.
