Over My Dead Body - Jeffrey Archer
Narrated by George Blagden
I received an advance review copy for free thanks to NetGalley and HarperCollins UK Audio and I am leaving this review voluntarily
THE CLOCK IS TICKING IN THIS ROLLERCOASTER RIDE OF A THRILLER…
In London, the Metropolitan Police set up a new Unsolved Murders Unit—a cold case squad—to catch the criminals nobody else can.
In Geneva, millionaire art collector Miles Faulkner—convicted of forgery and theft—was pronounced dead two months ago. So why is his unscrupulous lawyer still representing a dead client?
On a luxury liner en route to New York, the battle for power at the heart of a wealthy dynasty is about to turn to murder.
And at the heart of all three investigations are Detective Chief Inspector William Warwick, rising star of the department, and ex-undercover agent Ross Hogan, brought in from the cold.
Whilst this is the fourth book in the series, I am reading this as a standalone. There is so much going on in this book that it is hard not to be taken in by the plot. I feel that as I was reading this as a standalone I maybe missed out on some of the enjoyment that this book feels like it should bring but nevertheless I enjoyed it.
A fast-paced novel with a very detailed plot. I thought that it was quite a rollercoaster of a read with all of the ups and downs within the various different cases. I do want to recommend this book to people but I do feel that it will be better received by people that have read the other books in the series.
Rating 4/5
It has been about 10 years since I read a Jeffrey Archer book and I forgot just how good a story teller he is, I soon realised that this is not the first book these characters have appeared but it did not detract in any way as this is self contained in its own right, as one would expect from this author the book has action, mystery, Machiavellian threads and characters you invest in, overall an excellent read and I will be going to find the previous books with these characters, the narration was superb and only added to my enjoyment
First off its immediately clear this is not the first book in a series. I've not read the the others, and it didn't put me off continuing with the book, but they were talking about characters as if I should know who they are.
I enjoyed the start of the book on the ship - the crime is almost solved in this section, only thing is its not overly believable as you know you still have 3 quarters of the book to go. Its a very different style of writing detective novels than I have come across before an it was refreshing.
The narrator is great. Really good differentiating all the characters and none of the accents annoying which is always a bonus!
This was my first Jefferey Archer book and I look forward to reading more but I definitely think if you've read the previous books in the series you'll settle into it quicker than I did. I'd hope you have more understanding of the characters and their personalities and why they are in the positions they are in as the book doesn't offer much background info.
Wow, what a fast paced mystery and adventure! I just loved it so much. The story has so much detail and is very comprehensive, with many different plot lines, but I was able to follow it all ok by listening to the audiobook. The narrator of the audiobook was amazing. I felt like I was watching a 5 star movie, as there was just so many things going on and it was all very exciting and high class.
The story is set in London, Geneva and a luxury liner going to New York, with three different investigations being pursued by Detective Chief Inspector William Warwick and Ross Hogan. I loved William; his character is so awesome and I can't wait to read more about him. This was my first Jeffrey Archer book, but it won't be my last. I loved this book so much that I have borrowed Books 1 and 2 of this series from my online library and I have the 3rd book on reserve. I also can't wait to read the 5th book when it comes out!
Many thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for a copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
An excellently written novel by an expert storyteller.
As you read, you peel back each of the layers of the story, creating interest and intrigue that keeps you reading until the last.
I would definitely recommend this book.
Many thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for gifting me this arc in exchange for an honest, unbiased review.
Over My Dead Body is the fourth book in the series featuring DCI William Warwick. The novel begins as William Warwick is on holiday heading towards New York on a luxury cruise. After a death occurs onboard, he is asked to investigate the mysterious surroundings. When he returns to London, his next task is to head up a new Unsolved Murders Unit set up by the Metropolitan Police. There are many strands to the plot line and it is incredibly difficult to summarise them all without giving away spoilers.
The novel is full of twists and has the usual engaging plot and superb writing I’ve come to expect from Jeffrey Archer. However, I would recommend reading the books in order even though they can be read as stand alone novels. The narrator was excellent and added another level of suspense to the plot.
I have not read a Jeffery archer book in such a long time and I forgot just how detailed his plots can be. There is so much going on in this book and I flew through the audiobook of it in a day.
This is the 4th book in the series featuring DCI William Warwick and the first that I have read. I did not realise this when requesting it and I have to admit that I felt quite confused. I do feel that I missed a lot due to this. My mistake entirely.
In saying that though, I really enjoyed the story and the face paced nature of it. It will take you across the world, and into worlds you will never dream of. It starts on a cruise ship where the DCI and his wife are trying to have a lovely holiday together. But a mysterious death on board and he puts his detective hat back on and it all spirals from there.
Thanks to Harper Collins UK Audio. The narration was great and I loved the interview at the end.
