Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for my copy of this e-arc!
This book was enjoyable and fun to read! I liked the way the plot was written.
Will read from this author again
Loved this! Devoured it. Will definitely read more by the author. It's one of those best served with knowing as little as possible, but this is pacey and gripping. It's that book where you go 'just one more chapter' and before you know it, you've stayed up until the early hours!
This was my first book by this author and I enjoyed it. I love books with multiple POVs, so I felt this flowed well for me. I was intrigued by the sister's relationship and felt the tension building throughout the story. Overall this was entertaining and I look forward to reading more by this author.
I loved her last book so I was a little worried that this wouldn’t have been as good. However i thoroughly enjoyed it. I loved the dark and foreboding atmosphere created by Wroebel. The book was creepy and intriguing, I would highly recommend.
This is an intriguing book. It is very atmospheric. There are lots of twists and turns. This is very tense.
Secrets, sinister cults and sisterhood, are the ingredients skillfully blended together to create this pacy page turner that you won't want to put down.
Thank you Penguin Michael Joseph and Netgalley. I really wanted to read this as I had read the Recovery of Rose Gold and wasn't disappointed.
I devoured this. Good storyline about cults, which was interesting and was done with sensitivity.
Can't wait for more.
Highly recommend
Dark, thrilling and completely unputdownable, the story of two sisters, a cult, secrets ... brilliant!
Read this in 2 sittings and have just bought the other books. Very talented and made what could be a cliche about cults very interesting. It covers some triggering subjects but I feel it’s been done sensitively and with thought. Loved it! Can’t wait for the other 2 to arrive!
I didn't quite finish this one, though I enjoyed the first book by the author, The Recovery of Rose Gold. I could see this had some very strong qualities too, however it was not as gripping as the first one for me. In describing the cult-like island setup and the girls' father's sadism, the novel takes on a lot and mostly succeeds, but for me it could have done with a tighter focus on the heroine and what she actually felt about her situation.
I enjoyed the story which was intriguing, mysterious and kept you guessing. However, sadly I didn’t like the end, I mean the very end, it just seemed to stop. Unless I didn’t get it? Was enjoying it up until that.
Due to a sudden, unexpected passing in the family a few years ago and another more recently and my subsequent (mental) health issues stemming from that, I was unable to download this book in time to review it before it was archived as I did not visit this site for several years after the bereavements. This meant I didn't read or venture onto netgalley for years as not only did it remind me of that person as they shared my passion for reading, but I also struggled to maintain interest in anything due to overwhelming depression. I was therefore unable to download this title in time and so I couldn't give a review as it wasn't successfully acquired before it was archived. The second issue that has happened with some of my other books is that I had them downloaded to one particular device and said device is now defunct, so I have no access to those books anymore, sadly.
This means I can't leave an accurate reflection of my feelings towards the book as I am unable to read it now and so I am leaving a message of explanation instead. I am now back to reading and reviewing full time as once considerable time had passed I have found that books have been helping me significantly in terms of my mindset and mental health - this was after having no interest in anything for quite a number of years after the passings. Anything requested and approved will be read and a review written and posted to Amazon (where I am a Hall of Famer & Top Reviewer), Goodreads (where I have several thousand friends and the same amount who follow my reviews) and Waterstones (or Barnes & Noble if the publisher is American based). Thank you for the opportunity and apologies for the inconvenience
Natalie's sister Kit has been at a wellness retreat, on an island in Maine for 6 months, they are not close.
When Natalie receives a cryptic message threatening to tell Kit what Natalie did, she is soon on her way to the island.
The wellness retreat screams CULT and Natalie is desperate to find her sister and bring her home.
The story is told from both sisters perspectives.
The story is intriguing and definitely worth a read.
Thank you to Netgalley for my copy in exchange for an honest review.
Thanks to Netgalley for giving this book to read and review.
Sadly, I did not like this book at all. I did not like the characters and felt the storyline could have been developed better. I did try putting it down and going back to it but I just couldn't persevere. As a result I did not finish the book.
I found this read really slow, although the characters were interesting despite their flaws. The cult story did not keep me captivated and overall the ending felt like a second thought and anti-climatic. For me, it's just not the type of book I would pick up, although others may enjoy.
A brilliant psychological thriller with themes of secrets, lies and pain
Such intelligent plotting and well developed characters make it a fast paced page turning treat.
The prose is accomplished and I adored the emotional pull of the book.
The premise sounded intriguing however I found it quite predictable and was hoping the writing would compensate for the plot. This was not the case unfortunately and I was left a bit disappointed.
This might hurt
Kit Collins enters a wellness clinic on a remote Maine island for six months to sort her life out.
Her sister Nat hasn’t heard from her in all that time until she gets a chilling email threatening to spill a dark secret to her sister.
Nat gets herself to the island to find her sister and spill the beans before they can be spilled for her.
Meanwhile, in an alternating narrative, we hear the story of a young girl with a controlling, over-bearing bully of a father (who can only be addressed as ‘Sir’). The young girl, obsessed by Houdini, punishingly teaches herself magic tricks and eventually gains reknown as ‘Madame Fearless’ a David Blaine-esque Mentalist.
I was in two minds about this book. Veering from enjoying it immensely (particularly the Madame Fearless story) from being a bit bogged down in the island side of the story.
But the ending was very abrupt, without real closure and a bit confusing. Hence the ‘meh’ three stars from me.
I enjoyed The authors previous novels and was pleased to be given the opportunity to review This Might Hurt. However, I found it a difficult novel and thus failed to finish.
I really enjoyed the Recovery of Rose Gold so when I was approved for this one I was excited to read the next novel.
Unfortunately this one didn’t hit the mark for me. It had all the potential of a great novel but I found something missing.
The story was told in three parts from three separate points of view.
The main story was of Natalie who went to a commune/cult/getaway of sorts to find her sister who had been there for over six months.
There’s also a timeline of another woman whose abusive and controlling father ‘Sir’ has sculpted her life and way of thinking.
I did enjoy when parts of this came together but on the whole I’m left feeling a bit deflated.
