Due to a sudden, unexpected passing in the family a few years ago and another more recently and my subsequent (mental) health issues stemming from that, I was unable to download this book in time to review it before it was archived as I did not visit this site for several years after the bereavements. This meant I didn't read or venture onto netgalley for years as not only did it remind me of that person as they shared my passion for reading, but I also struggled to maintain interest in anything due to overwhelming depression. I was therefore unable to download this title in time and so I couldn't give a review as it wasn't successfully acquired before it was archived. The second issue that has happened with some of my other books is that I had them downloaded to one particular device and said device is now defunct, so I have no access to those books anymore, sadly.
This means I can't leave an accurate reflection of my feelings towards the book as I am unable to read it now and so I am leaving a message of explanation instead. I am now back to reading and reviewing full time as once considerable time had passed I have found that books have been helping me significantly in terms of my mindset and mental health - this was after having no interest in anything for quite a number of years after the passings. Anything requested and approved will be read and a review written and posted to Amazon (where I am a Hall of Famer & Top Reviewer), Goodreads (where I have several thousand friends and the same amount who follow my reviews) and Waterstones (or Barnes & Noble if the publisher is American based). Thank you for the opportunity and apologies for the inconvenience.

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.
I love Tom Jackson’s photography and this one is another of his books I need to get a physical copy of !,
I loved this book, I thought the pictures were great and the snippets of information about each image was very informative. I liked the way each chapter covered a different subject. Firstly going through the types of primates. Then moving things like family groups or behaviours. Maybe im being a little picky but maybe this book would of got that 5th star if it just looked at each animal in turn with behaviour etc on each set of informative text as I would of loved to read more about them within the text with supporting pictures rather than each picture having its own great snippet of information. I loved reading about the social interactions with each other. Also how some moneys have one dominant male and others don't. I especially loved reading why the colours of the monkeys are different. I wished there was a section on what pray these moneys have and how they warn each others or protect each other. The images in this book were brilliant and some are so close you could see some amazing features like how some monkey have special pads on there rails for better grip.these really great close ups really made this book stand out for me. I found I had learnt a lot from this book and can see it as a great reference book which is brilliant for all ages.
I would like to thank the author and publishing team for bringing us this magnificent and very interesting read for everyone to enjoy learning together as a family unit.

I was unable to download it properly before the expiry date (even though I thought I had). I could therefore not read it, I have read many books in this series and love it. If I do read this in the future, Iw will come back and write a full review.
Seeing as primates represent the closest mammal to humans, we have a special fascination with them. This book provides a gorgeous collection of photographs of monkeys, apes and prosimians, organized in chapters about New World monkeys, Old World monkeys, monkey relatives, anatomy, behavior, and family. Every photo is accompanied by short blurbs about the main characteristics.
I would recommend this to everyone who is interested in these fascinating animals, or is passionate about photography, and I think this album would make a perfect addition to their coffee table, to browse from time to time.
Monkeys: Apes, Gorillas and other Primates by Tom Jackson is currently scheduled for release on October 14 2021. As our closest relatives in the animal world, monkeys have always fascinated and amused humans in equal measure. Monkeys is an outstanding collection of photographs showing these complex, intelligent animals in their natural habitat. Arranged in chapters covering anatomy, family, behavior, feeding and young, Monkeys features a wide variety of monkeys and apes, including baboons, gorillas, orangutans, macaques, howler monkeys, spider monkeys, marmosets, gibbons, mandrills and chimpanzees. The smallest monkey is the pygmy marmoset, which can be just 117 millimetres (4.6in) in length with a 172-millimetre (6.8in) tail and weighing just over 100 grams (3.5oz); while the massive Grauer’s gorilla can weigh over 180 kilos (400lbs). With full captions explaining how the species act in a group, communicate, hunt and feed, and rear its young, Monkeys is a brilliant examination in 230 outstanding color photographs of these remarkable primates.
Monkeys is a wonderful collection of primate photography. My youngest is animal obsessed, so have have seen countless books and documentaries about animals of all kinds. I have to say that I have never before seen such a wonderful collection of primate photographs. The information provided for the pictures is succinct while still being informative and interesting. The eyes and facial expressions of the various primates run just a wide range, much like those of people. The variety of size, coloration, habitats and more just might inspire further reading and care about the damage being done to habitats where some of these amazing animals live. This book holds up after several looks and I think those intrigued by primates and animals in general will enjoy this book. It definitely belongs in libraries, but interested collectors and various school libraries might want to add this to their collections as well.
Beautiful detailed photography. I think a large hardcopy does more right to this book than a pdf fornat on small screen. It is the kind of book you want to have on your reading table.. Recommend to everyone who loves animals, nature and photography
This is an absolutely beautiful coffee table book. The book has large color photographs that appear to have all been taken in nature. The book features apes, gorillas, and other primates throughout the world. The book is divided into new world monkeys, old world monkeys, monkey relatives, anatomy, behavior, and family. Each section has a couple paragraph introduction and each photograph has a caption with the type of monkey and explaining how it fits into its section of the book. I have been lucky enough to see monkeys in nature while I was on a study aboard in Tanzania, so I was especially impressed with the quality of the photographs because they are not easy to capture on camera.
Bookstagram post coming, but no date set.
There are 230 photographs in this book and every single one is wonderful. “Monkeys” shows a great variety of our closest relatives in their natural habitat. It doesn’t only feature the usual suspects: chimps, gorillas and orangutans, but also gibbons, spider monkeys, howlers, proboscis monkeys and many, many others that I was not as familiar with. I took my time with this one and enjoyed all the images, as well as the facts accompanying them. There are Old and New World monkeys, some who live in dry climates or in cold environments. Some have tails, or big eyes. Every detail is fascinating. I loved the red monkeys, they really look like pasty tourists who got too much sun! There are explanations of their anatomy, family, behavior and, my favorite, how they rear their young. You can see how we are so closely related, most of their expressions look so human and the feelings they show, especially love, are relatable to us. This is a gorgeous book for animal and nature lovers.
I chose to read this book and all opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased. Thank you, NetGalley/Amber Books!
Absolutely love this book! Beautiful pictures!
Would love to use these for lessons about evolution, variation and adaptation with my students! Stunning pictures showcasing the wonderful world of monkey
I really needed a reference book about primates and apes for a graphic design project and this came up on my Netgalley feed at the right time.
This is absolutely stunning and makes an amazing reference book for any artist or nature lover! Lots and lots of beautiful high-quality photos.
I absolutely love this book! The imagery is amazing. This book highlights Old World and New World monkey as well as other relatives. As a librarian who received her undergrad in anthropology, I will be purchasing this for our library.

Apes, Gorillas and other Primates

This book has the most exquisite photos! Beautiful close ups, unusual poses, captivating expressions, and it held me spellbound! I read hundreds of ARCs but I certainly don't buy all of them when I finish. This one I will buy and put on my coffee table to show everyone who comes over! (When I am not looking at the photos again and again!) There's over 200 of these brilliant photos! Each with information about them.
The book has information on a variety of primates and cousins. It doesn't load you down with lots of text but gives you the information in doses as you follow the photos to emphasize the info. Not only does it describe, and show the types of primate, by the end of the book you will learn so much more about them.
Discussed is their different diets, habitat, breeding, age they live in the wild, special traits, vocalizations, socialization, anatomy, and more. Each primate species is different and each is explained and shown.
I am a nature nut and I would love to get a book like this. If you or someone you know is a nature lover too, consider this gorgeous book for a gift or for yourself! They will thank you! I really am amazed at the photos and I did learn some things.
I want to thank the publisher and NetGalley for letting me read this captivating book! It truly is marvelous! Thanks!
Cover is amazing, just like the photos!
I love this book. All the extraordinary photos and information about monkeys will make you fall in love with them. I would recommend it to anyone interested in monkeys or maybe is not interested but would love to find out more about them. The author did an amazing job.
Thank you NetGalley and Amber Books Ltd for providing me an ARC of this book.
I'm not a huge fan of chimps, gibbons and other primates – although I do like the cuddly ones, the lemurs, tarsiers etc. This book does kind of demand you enjoy looking at photos of them, though, with the images definitely front and centre and the informative captions to the sides and corners (as is the routine in such books from this publisher – one of the most successful at what they do, in my mind). Structured sensibly, this book portrays old world, then new world, monkeys, then the non-monkey apes, before specific chapters convey the particulars of their anatomy and how they work, their societies, and their family behaviour. I won't say this is utterly comprehensive, but I'd never asked google if a hoolock was valid in Scrabble before now.
Read as one piece, the captions can be repetitive, but unless you're an affirmed fan of the beasts you'll learn something, without a doubt. Had you realised the human is the only primate to routinely have a white to their eye? It is a book that will probably preach to the converted – or perhaps a budding animal portrait artist – in that those who love the critters will still love them. I, in my scrolling, found too many instances of their poses where I saw the face down to the nose looking friendly, inquisitive and welcoming, only to later see their teeth bared below. Not fun. So I'm not a convert – a family of baboons drinking in unison notwithstanding – but I can easily tell this is a classy product for those who want it. A strong four stars.
If you enjoy wildlife photography, this beautiful book is for you. The book contains 230 stunning colour photographs of monkeys and other primates, organised into sections on ‘Old World Monkeys’, ‘New World Monkeys’ and ‘Monkey relatives’, as well as fascinating sections on Anatomy, Behaviour and Family. This engrossing volume gives an excellent insight into primate behaviour and interactions. The photographs are absolutely captivating and are accompanied by useful contextual captions. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and could not put it down, so would certainly recommend it. This would make an excellent choice of coffee table book for any nature or wildlife photography aficionado.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Amber Books for an ARC e-book in exchange for an honest review.
If you love primates this book is for you. The wildlife photography is the star of this book. With over 230 photographs every page is filled with familiar and less know monkeys. I learned that Old World Monkeys come from Asia, Africa and Europe. And monkeys from the Americas, North and South, are considered New World. Monkey relatives like apes, chimpanzees and gorillas are also included. My knowledge of monkeys is moistly from seeing in zoos and I didn't realized how many different species exists. Each photo gives information about the species and locations in the wild where they can be found. There are also sections on Anatomy, Behavior and Family. If monkey's were my spirit animal I would need this book. Thank you to NetGalley and Amber Books for a temporary ARC ebook in exchange for an honest review.
I absolutely love this book! The photography is incredible. Each image really captures the remarkable individuality of each monkey. This is the perfect coffee table book for animal lovers. It would make a great addition to a Key Stage 2 or 3 classroom/library too.
Monkeys really are fascinating animals. This book showcases some incredible photography alongside information about different species and characteristics. The emphasis is on the pictures (some of the best wildlife photography I’ve seen) however the facts on monkeys does compliment it well. I never realised just how many types of monkeys there are. Definitely worth a read!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for sending me an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
