My advice... If you love vampires give this a go. It's not the best vampire story I've read but it is also far from the worst.
I liked the dark chilling atmosphere. I also liked that it was set in northern England. Come on everyone who lives here knows there are vampires up north. Only kidding but it is a perfect setting.
The feud becomes a bit long and drawn out. What feud I hear you say? I'm not telling read it find out for yourself.
Overall I liked the book.
Enjoy 3.5 stars
This gave me the goth feeling I was looking for. I had a pretty good time, but it's nog something that will be one of my favorites. Its a nice standard book for when you're craving a goth vampire story.
The book is about an alternative universe where Vampires are real. They signed a treaty with humans, so that they would only eat the homeless and stop eating children.
But invariably the treaty is broken when the ruling Vampire Lord Harbinger, is overthrown.
So the children of Storm Hill whose parents are servants to the vampires, and the poor kids of the Cauldron must unite to stop them.
I can't say I enjoyed this book. It spent too long explaining things, which at times were unnecessary, or could've been explained elsewhere.
At times it felt rushed and parts felt out of place, and there were moments that needed more context, such as a character suddenly changing sides.
There were some great parts, such as the Storm Hill kids, and the V and V game. I did love Michael and his family, and would've liked more written about them.
Overall, I liked this book.. A vampire novel set sometime in Northern England, Vampires and Victims tells the story of Charlie Carter learning about vampires and how to fight them. Charlie and his siblings train by playing the game Vampires and Victims. One they have trained enough, they plan to free the humans slaves at Storm Haven and also rescue the missing children being experimented on. McShane has a definite talent for creating interesting characters. Charlie and his family come off as real and relatable. The only issue I had was with the pacing of the novel. The middle dragged. Charlie’s feud with Lorcan got to be boring. Having a new of them fighting and j sulking each other is fine a couple of times, but it felt that those scenes made up the majority of the middle section. Michael and his clan were adorable & I wanted more of them and not Lorcan. Also, who was the old lady with the priest? We’re we ever told? As I said earlier, overall I did enjoy the book.
I love books with a creepy gothic vibe and this had everything I look for in a vampire read. It was dark, chilling and gothic I couldnt put it down

The book was a nice read as a whole. It's been a while since I've read a story with children being the main characters, Charlie, in particular, being the protag. But one of the good things about the story is that it does not focus on the protag in particular, but includes a group of very interesting characters. The takes its time at the beginning where the author slowly builds the story of vampires and humans as well as introducing the main cast of characters. May be this is where it might feel somehow slow until the plot starts moving. But after that comes the interesting part.. The story begins moving forward with a lot of suspence and mystery and even though vampires are essential part of it, the descriptions aren't filled with blood and gore, as most are used to, when it comes to vampire stories. Definitely a fun read!
