Great start to this series, I'll definitely keep up with it as they come out!
Good execution of the story, great setup, beautiful art in a unique style.
Excited for Volume 2!
When a girl is looking for her missing aunt, who just happens to be a powerful witch, who else can she turn to for help than the devil himself? That is exactly what happens in Devil on Her Shoulder – The Bruja is missing when a botched attempt to create a potion of eternal youth results in the disappearance of “The Bruja”, the most powerful witch around. Her niece, aided by all of Bruja’s various familiars and minions, and Lucifer himself is trying to figure out what happened. As we all know, Lucifer isn’t doing this from the kindness of his own heart or anything, it seems he’s somewhat stuck on Earth due to how he was accidentally summoned and fears an usurper will take his throne.
“Hell and damnation! The Bruja is missing! When the most powerful witch alive disappears without a trace, Norah, her 17-year-old niece, decides to investigate. But upon entering her aunt’s manor, she interrupts a summoning ritual and finds herself face to face with the devil… Or half of him, anyway, as he has been cut in two and is now stuck in a pentagram. Unable to return to Hell without Norah’s help, Lucifer agrees to assist her in finding the Bruja—a devilish task when you’re the most feared and hated being on the planet!”
This book is pretty funny, with banter reminiscent of the symbiotic relationship between Venom and Eddie Brock the the recent Venom film. The Devil is basically forced to ride Norah’s back in a backpack since he never fully formed in this world, resulting in all sorts of shenanigans. The artwork is really well done, with fantastical monsters, and weird creatures abound. Care has been taken to create a world similar to many that you would hear in folktales about The Devil, with a modern touch that reminds me of a number of Hollywood films when they re-contextualize places like Hell as nothing more than an evil bureaucracy. the end product is fantastic, and would make a great movie or cartoon series.
This is only the first volume of the story, I am not certain how much there is, but I would definitely like to read more if given the chance. With Halloween coming up, this is an off-beat look at some spooky hijinks with a dash of dark fantasy thrown in, so it would definitely fill that void you might have for spooky stories. I love the art style, and the humor in the book – I’m not sure if its to the credit of the writers or the translator/localizer, but they did a great job.
NOTE: I received a free preliminary, and likely unedited copy of this book from Netgalley for the purposes of providing an honest, unbiased review of the material. Thank you to all involved.
Thank you, NetGalley and Europe Comics for the free copy of this in exchange for an honest review.
As soon as I saw the cover of this book I was hooked and once I read the summary I knew I needed to read it. I love anything to do with witches, especially stories that have a different and unique setup for them. I also love unique versions of hell and the Devil and this book definitely has that. I want to make a joke about the cover putting "a spell on you" but I'm too enchanted to really think of anything lol.
First, we need to talk about the illustrations because I feel that's what is going to draw a lot of people in. They are gorgeous. The art is so beautiful and full of life. Even if there were no words this would be a really enjoyable work. But we do have words and I liked those just as much! I really enjoyed the story itself. Norah is very charming and likable as the niece to the most powerful witch but not having any magic of her own. I also like the team-up of her and the devil and I'm really intrigued about the rest of the plot and what's going on.
There were also a few moments that genuinely made me laugh out loud and I can't remember the last time I did that while reading a comic.
This is a very short first volume and it does make me sad because I want more!! So I will definitely be checking out the rest of the series.
This graphic novel with beautiful illustrations is about a young girl named Nora on the hunt for her missing her Aunt Bruja.
She stumbles upon a summoning a demon prince Lucifer Morningstar. Nora employees his help to track down her aunt after a bit of going back and forth. We learned so much about Nora within the first few pages as well as the impact her aunt has on the magical community.
I really enjoyed this graphic nove, and I would recommend this book!
Thank you for giving me access to a copy of this graphic novel!
I really want to read more graphic novels, and Devil on Her Shoulder is such an interesting one. The illustrations are outstanding and the story about witches, devil and hell made me really excited to start reading.
This introductory volume shows us who Norah and Bruja are. Norah is not your ordinary teenager type of girl. She is the niece of the strongest witch and when she finds that she is missing, she goes on a mission to find her witchy aunt. From here, everything gets better and better. The art, the dialogue, everything goes smoothly!
First of all, I would like to thank the publisher and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Devil on her shoulder by Cédric Mayen and Sandra Cardona is the first instalment of The Bruja is Missing series, and it is absolutely delightful! From the captivating art style to the magical elements and the humour, I was hooked from the very first panel.
The artwork is so detailed and although I sat and finished the volume in one sitting, I couldn’t help but turn back to the beginning to catch some of the finer details in the backgrounds.
The plot is intriguing and fast-paced but easy to follow. Norah is charming and I couldn’t help but adore her. I would recommend this graphic novel to fans of Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas and The Owl House animated series.
I can’t wait to see what happens next!
Norah is the 17 years old niece of the strongest witch, called the Bruja. When she goes to visit her aunt, she finds her missing, a half summoned Satan in the middle of the house and the Bruja's very panicked familiar. Norah decides to go on a mission to find her lost aunt, so she lets the Devil in her backpack and they go on an adventure!
"The Bruja is Missing" is a great introductory volume to this new series called "Devil on Her Shoulder". The art is beautiful, the writing is funny and has some really great pop culture references.
Really enjoyed this graphic novel.
Loved the colour palette used and the art style.
The premise of the devil basically being reduced to a familiar in order to figure things out with a novice witch was really cute and funny.
Thought it was a nice touch that he transformed into animals that historically have had links to witchcraft or darker magic.
The story is intriguing so far and has some great Halloweeny feeling to it, I'd definitely recommend checking it out!
First and foremost, I'd like to express my gratitude to Netgalley for providing me with a copy of this graphic novel.
This comic is straightforward to read and understand. All of the following elements can be found in this graphic novel:
• Magic
• Witch
• Halloween vibes
The artwork and color schemes were well-balanced.
So this was very fun and well-illustrated read! I had a ball of a time reading the story and just admiring the art. However, my only issue with it was that the panels were sometimes too abrupt - I could not understand the shift in the story, very well.
While it was fun, I felt that it had maybe a little spice missing?
I still am going to give another chance to the sequel to see how I feel about the book. I wouldn't call it quits just now!
Update: The illustrations are very impressive; they, and especially the full-page-illustrations, are absolutely stunning. Seeing the bruja's house being alive and magical sets a great tone for the remaining story. It's also humorous, the companionship between the main character and the demon is very entertaining.
[I don't feel comfortable giving this graphic novel a high rating, as I couldn't read any of it, because it's entirely in French, while the title and description were in English.
I'm quite bummed, because the illustrations are absolutely stunning and I would've wanted to read (and enjoy) the whole story. In these 50 pages there seems to be a lot going on and it surely looks entertaining.]

Hello readers! I received this ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. "The Bruja is Missing" is the first graphic novel in the series “The Devil on Her Shoulder", written by Cédric Mayen and illustrated by Sandra Cardona.
Norah is 17 and she’s the niece of the strongest witch of all time. When the Bruja suddenly disappears without leaving messages, Norah decides to go find her. But what awaits her at her aunt’s house is totally unexpected. Someone has summoned the devil, but she has interrupted the ritual and now Satan is stuck with half his body in the pentagram.
Since the one who summoned him cannot help him free himself, Noah will have to carry the devil on her shoulders and help him. As long as he helps her find her aunt.
“The Bruja is Missing” is a really short graphic novel, just 49 pages, but it manages to introduce a story that seems to promise a lot. There’s something wrong with both witches and in Hell, you can smell infernal intrigues and dangerous plots.
And in the meantime, we live this unexpected collaboration between Noah, a not-so-good witch with little power and little ability, and the ruler of Hell, or at least a part of it. The interactions between the two are funny and very interesting.
The characters introduced seem interesting and multifaceted.
Being so short the jewel of this graphic novel are the illustrations. Beautiful strokes, beautiful colors, almost like an anime or a cartoon.
Despite the few pages, the two authors managed to win me over with both writing and drawings. I’m very curious and I can’t wait to read the new installment of this infernal story!
I received an e-arc copy of this graphic novel through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Honestly it was way too short to get a proper sense of the story but so far it was interesting. I liked the art and the characters and the world building seemed amazing!😊
I would most definitely read the next volumes as well!😉
I'll start with the bad since there isn't much. 1. The story (so far) is not super original. It's what you'd expect about a devil and a bubbling witch teaming up to do a thing. 2. The story (so far) moves pretty darn fast, maybe... too fast. This is a con, yes, but also a plus. Although I felt like I didn't have time to process one thing before we were on to the next, I also felt engaged and ready to turn the next page and the next page.
For the good things: The art is beautiful and unique. The style seems like it shouldn't work with the subject matter but it totally does! Another thing is that there is a lot of detail put on the pages. You can lose yourself finding little things that were drawn to make the story come to life, like scenes of the underworld in which things are just happening in the background and are not address, you are in hell, mates! The protagonist is bumbling, sure, but doesn't feel cliched or completely clueless and I appreciate that. Overall I'd say this is a homerun first volume on an ongoing story. Would love the read the rest.
I requested this book as it looked cute and it's close to Halloween and I was in a spooky mood, and it ended up being just what I wanted. The art was my favourite thing about this whole book, I loved the palette and how cute it was. The plot was super interesting and I'm interested in seeing where it goes in the next volume.
However, I didn't really care for the main character, and the story was mostly an info dump, and the "good part" of the story is yet to come, which left me irked, but also excited.
Overall, I would highly recommend this to middle school children who love Halloween.
This was intriguing. I initially thought the devil would show up straight away, but the way it turned out was so much better.
I love the quirkiness and shape-shifting tendencies of the Devil. Every shape Devil took had a reason behind it (imo atleast), for instance when Devil wishes to be fearsome, it takes its true shape, fox is the cunning one who doesn't seem to be that dangerous, a handsome stranger to try and entice the girl, and the best was the actor for sure, that was hilarious. Oh, also the cat was super cute.
Norah, was quite clever despite being innocent and I liked her aloofness. I loved when she called Devil on its bullshit.
The art was impressive, and the dialogues were quirky and fun.
In all, it was a great experience to read this, and I'd definitely love to read the next one in the series.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for providing me with the ARC.
The title of this book was much more straightforward then I had expected to be honest. I had expected it to be more of a euphemism for some demon. But nope, it the Lucifer himself, causing as much chaos as he can manage without legs to take him where he needs to go.
I found this cute, funny, and for some reason oddly interesting. I was disappointed to come to the end of the volume because I am so intrigued by what's going on, but have no clue why it is.
If I can find Volume 2 of this, I definitely plan on continuing this. (Especially because I think Norah and Luci will become good friends)
This comic deserves all the stars, guys. All of them!!
I am so glad I picked it as my first Netgalley ARC review.
So, to give you a bit of context, The Bruja is Missing: Volume 1 of Devil on her Shoulder is, as the title clearly states, about a witch mainly referred to as The Bruja, who has gone missing. Her niece, a young witch named Norah, searches for her at her manor. Yet, instead of her aunt, she finds none other than the Prince of Hell himself, Lucifer. Well, the top half of him anyway, because the rest of him is stuck back in Hell. In a quest to find her aunt, Norah agrees to work with the Devil, whose top half she carries in her backpack, and in return, she will help him reunite with the bottom half of his body currently waiting for him in Hell.
I love comics. They are easy to read, and I love that the story is dramatized by beautiful art. This comic is no exception. The story was really quirky and entertaining. There were plenty of moments that made me laugh out loud, while also keeping me on the edge of my seat, waiting to find out what happened to The Bruja, who seems like a stand-up lady, aside from the fact that she has a house full of demons. They look really cute, though, so I can’t blame her. The characters were so well done that even Lucifer was likable. Although, I wouldn’t trust him for a second. Suffice to say, I loved Norah. She is funny, sweet, and so bad at being a witch it’s just hilarious. I also loved the art. Each page was filled with beautiful and intricate drawings, and I couldn’t take my eyes away from them.
I honestly cannot think of anything that I didn’t like about this comic. It is a clear cut 5 out of 5 stars. Both contributors, Cédric Mayen and Sandra Cardona have done an excellent job putting together this lovely comic. I am really looking forward to reading the next volume. The ending only left me wanting more. Seriously…get me the next one, NOW! I need to know what happens next and I believe it’s cruel to keep me waiting. It means nothing that only I finished it less than an hour ago.
This was honestly perfect and one of the best graphic novels I read. I loved the art inside and of course the genres put together were done perfectly. I loved and adored the dialogue the author used and of course the best of all, the art inside was phenomenal and really only made me want to pick up even more graphic novels. This was great and an easy 5 out of 5 stars!
