The story was good! It's got potential to be interesting, but it really isn't my cup of tea as it stands.
General impressions
I requested this book simply because it seemed like a cute story to lighten my mood after finishing a few heavier books and to my surprise ended up really enjoying every page.
The first thing that held my attention was the art: not only I found the drawings beautiful, but the colour palette was wonderful without sacrificing the dialogues or frames legibility or the story's mood.
This story reminded me of a mix between Mooncakes and Nimona, not only theme and palette wise but in how the artists made sure each character's personality spoke through the character's fashion choices and how beautifully the fabric fell over the different body types and how this book is full of anti-heroes with a sense of humour.
The entire story has a complex world-building that is a wonder to look at and read about, dialogues filled with humour and pop culture references that will amuse children and adults alike and a suspenseful plot. The only problem I had was that I didn't care for the main witch: she left her demons home alone to starve and she hurt them so she can rot under a bridge for all I care. She looks like a boss though.
Conclusions
I picked this book up as a distraction but I seriously love how easily it was to immerse myself in its world.
I need the sequel now!
Thank you to NetGalley and Europe Comics for gifting me this DRC.
Rating: 4/5
Edited review: the art in this is so beautiful, and the color scheme and linework.. just lovely. The story itself is interesting enough too. It ended rather abruptly, but I figure that's because the story will continue in another volume. I'd be interested to read the next one as well
I just have to say that the art in Devil on Her Shoulder is stunning. The artist is extremely talented and the pictures are colorful and creative. It has a little bit of a Hayao Miyazaki Spirited Away vibe. The text style compliments the art very well. There is a good deal of sarcasm and witty banter between the characters, which delivers quite a few laughs. The overall story is original, clever, and inviting. Once I started reading, I did not want to put it down and I was sad when I came to the end. I can't wait for volume two!
My Review on Devil on Her Shoulder 1. The Bruja Is Missing! By Sandra Cardona and Cédric Mayen.
A short summary: A Bruja gets hit by a plane when she is flying on her broom, and goes mysteriously missing. Her niece, who failed her broom flying exam 3 times, goes looking for the Bruja. But she has help from an unexpected corner, the devil himself.
The review: 3 stars!
For some reason my download wasn’t the best quality, but maybe that was my internet connection.
I loved the way characters and backgrounds where drawn, and felt like I could look around in the Bruja’s house for hours and still spot new things!
The story was engaging and had some funny references in it. In the middle it did get a bit boring and confusing and it felt like the story wasn’t going anywhere. But it all ends in a twist!
Thanks to NetGalley and Europecomics for making it able for me to read this!

I enjoyed this story! It was short, but the pacing felt good and I really enjoyed the character interactions. It's a great one to get in the mood for spooky season coming soon!
Thank you to NetGalley for providing this e-comic. This is a super cute story about a young witch trying to find her aunt with the help of the devil. The art is really fun and colorful and because this installment is very short, it's easy to breeze through. There's nothing super complex about this, so I think even middle graders could read this. Overall, this was fun and easy on the mind.
This was a very fun--if sometimes a little bit twee/corny--take on witchcraft, Satan, and magical worlds. I enjoyed the main character, and the art was absolutely gorgeous and so excessively detailed. However, I could've done without the references to Ryan Gosling and Harry Potter...I'm usually ok with pop culture references, but not really in fantasy. (Also, an HP reference in late 2021? Do we have to give the TERF more mileage?)
Rarely do I get so enthralled by a comic but Devil on Her Shoulder is just absolutely fantastic!
Here's all the things I loved about it:
1. The art is gorgeous and amazingly detailed. I couldn't help but to admire every panel to catch every little thing drawn.
2. The typography is perfect and suits the atmosphere (my typographer heart is in love).
3. The storyline is intriguing and kept me turning the pages until I read the whole volume in one sitting!
4. The Bruja, Norah and Lucifer are witty and complete BAMFs in their own ways. 10/10 would read anything with them in it.
I can't wait to see what happens in the next volume!
The art in this book was very well done and very creepy! I really enjoyed the story and will read the next!
Hmmm... More effort appears to have been put into the visuals than is the norm, but this story of a girl seeking her witch aunt with the help/hindrance of the Devil himself is too much of a muddle. Two and a half stars.
This story is an absolutely adorable introduction to a magical and demonic world. I was immediately taken with the details in the art. The artists style is a prefect combination of cute and creepy.
I especially enjoyed the creators takes on the devil and his demons. I loved seeing Lucifer in his many forms as well as the many shapes and sizes of demons.
The story definitely leaves me wanting more, without being dissatisfying. I can’t wait to read more.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review!
Devil on Her Shoulder by Cédric Mayen and Sandra Cardona is a magical graphic novel that will appeal to fans of Sabrina as well as Studio Ghibli movies like Kiki's Delivery Service and Howl's Moving Castle. The story revolves around a teenage witch, who one day discovers that her aunt is missing. She goes to investigate and discovers something sinister. The story also has images of cute anthropomorphic vegetables, talking foxes, and summonings of evil beings.
Overall, Devil on Her Shoulder is a graphic novel with gorgeous art. The highlight of the book was definitely the beautiful pages. Some of the images appeared manga inspired, and they drew my eye to every page. I would say though that I was disappointed with the length of the graphic novel. At 56 pages, it's much shorter than a regular graphic novel. If you're intrigued by the synopsis or you're a fan of graphic novels in general, I highly recommend that you check out this book, which is available now!
This was such a quick, fun read! The art style is whimsical and fun while also being colorful and very detailed which gave a lot life to the story. The full page art pieces were especially gorgeous and the artist obviously spent a huge amount of time making them interesting and stunning as well. I didn't realize the story would be in French since the title and description are both in English, but I google translated to the best of my abilities and greatly enjoyed this story! I think there was a lot of action and a great cast of characters to help this series start off all within under a hundred pages! I can't wait to see how the series continues.
I would recommend this to any readers looking for witchy or whimsical books or anyone that loves Graphic Novels!
