That ending!
Sam and Lauren have loved each other since they were kids.
Georgie loves her son and could not be happier now that wonderful Lauren will be her daughter in law. Lauren’s parents, Tim and Helen, have the perfect marriage and they are like family to Georgie and Sam. You can count on them for anything. Shortly after a dreamy wedding, tragedy happens and shocking secrets start to come out with such a force that you won’t be able to stop reading until the end. Thanks to NetGalley, publisher and author, for letting me have a free copy of this fantastic book so I could read and review.

The New Wife by Sue Watson is a roller coaster of a ride book. The book is told from the point of view of Georgie - the mother of Sam, who a few months ago married Lauren, his childhood sweetheart. Lauren is found dead and it doesn’t look accidental. Georgie tries to unravel what happened and discovers that her habit of taking things at face value isn’t always right. In this book, a lot of things aren’t what they seem to be - from family drama, family secrets, half-truths, and some overheard conversations. I cannot say that I liked all the characters in this book, but in many ways they appeared as “flawed humans” and it was a bit of a mystery trying to unravel who was telling the truth and who was twisting the truth to fit their narrative. Many times while reading this book I thought I knew who had killed Lauren, then about 10% later I’d change my mind. While around the 65% mark I figured out who might’ve done it, the ending was still a bit surprising (“wow, Ms. Watson actually went there!”). This is either the second or third book I’ve read by this author and, again, she didn’t disappoint with her twists and narrative style. This book was also a fast read, which I enjoyed. A solid 4 stars.

Sue Watson never disappoints! When (The New Wife) Lauren is found dead at the foot of their beautiful spiral staircase, it is husband Sam who is in the frame for her murder. However there are other people to consider - the author takes you through the list of other possible suspects from the perspective of Sam’s mother who is convinced her son is innocent. But why did no one know Lauren was pregnant? And who was the mystery caller she rowed with on the phone hours before her death? This book is a well told story of a tragic loss of a young wife, woven with family secrets that unfold and have massive implications for many. The story flows well and I would recommend this to anyone looking for a story about family and friendship with a few hiccups along the way! Thank you to NetGalley for a complementary e book in exchange for an honest review.

Georgie is delighted when her son Sam marries his childhood sweetheart Lauren, the daughter of her best friends Tim and Helen. The wedding will unite both close knit families. But then, only weeks later, Lauren is found dead at the bottom of the staircase in the remote cottage she shares with Sam. He’s soon arrested for her murder and Georgie must confront her son’s possible guilt while also dealing with the fractured relationship with her best friends. She knows she has to solve Lauren’s murder to free Sam. Her investigation leads her on a dark, twisted path to the truth.

The New Wife pulls you in from the first page. You won’t be able to put this one down! Georgie’s loneliness and vulnerability make her a sympathetic character. Others are not but the main theme here is that things are not always what they seem. 5 stars,

Thank you to NetGalley, Bookouture and Sue Watson for this ARC.

Sam and Lauren have known each other since nursery school. They are now adults with great jobs and are getting married, which pleases their families. Sam's mom, Georgie, is best friends with Lauren's parents, Helen and Tim. They have always been there for her and supported her being a single mom. And Georgie has always admired their devotion to one another.

Several weeks after the wedding, Sam calls his mom and tells her that Lauren is dead. Georgie, being the great mother that she is, rushes to be with her son and sees Lauren lying at the bottom of the stairs in their cottage. There is an investigation into Lauren’s death, and Sam becomes the prime suspect. However Lauren was hiding secrets, and not only her, but her family as well. What really happened to Lauren? Was her death an accident or not? Georgie is doing her own detective work to find out.

Sue Watson’s books literally keep getting better and better. THE NEW WIFE is my favorite novel by Sue Watson to date. The author’s vast experience and expertise in the thriller genre shows in her impeccable writing. She really captured my attention from the very beginning. This is not a slow burn book and you will not want to stop reading until you come to the suspenseful conclusion.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for my ARC in exchange for my honest review.

The New Wife by Sue Watson Intense domestic drama with a cauldron of volatile emotions swirling beneath the surface of the happy family vibe. As alibis prove to false and facts and long kept secrets come to light, everyone is a suspect in Lauren's “accidental” fall down the elegant marble staircase in Lauren and Sam's dream cottage. Many twists, turns and false leads until the killer is revealed during the last chapters. Highly recommended.

Thanks to the author, the publisher, and NetGalley for opportunity to preview the book.

This is the very definition of a page turner. It's one of those books you don't even realise you are reading until you've lost three hours and are twenty pages from the end.

Georgie seems to have a good life. Her son Sam is marrying his childhood sweetheart, Lauren, who happens to be the daughter of her best friends. She is starting a new relationship and things are going well

That is until Lauren is found dead and secrets start emerging. Were Sam and Lauren really happy? Why did Lauren have doubts just weeks before the wedding? And what is the deal with Lauren's best friend Sadie?

I have to admit two things here. Frist, I fingered the culprit whilst reading the book. Secondly, that is only because at some point I fingered everyone in the book.

What Watson does so well is slowly make us suspect everyone in the book, revealing secrets and twists which proved that we never really know anyone and we never know what goes on behind closed doors.

A really enjoyable novel with a really satisfying ending.

Sam has just married Lauren. They have known each other since they were small and their parents are best friends. Sam’s mother Georgie is single and always has been whilst Tim and Helen have always been there for her. Tim works as a detective chief inspector and is a rock for both women. When Lauren is found dead at the foot of the spiral staircase of their new home everyone understandably is devastated. Even more so when the police decide it wasn't an accident. they have only been married a few short weeks- who on earth would want Lauren dead? Is the friend with a troubled past anything to do with this and if so why?
Argh!!! OMG! One I wanted to race through and find out the whys and wherefores- to me the sign of an excellent writer. To give that tension and mystery whilst holding the reader captivated is a true skill in my book (every pun intended!) I loved this- there were twists and turns, suspects and not (as in they were and then they weren’t in my head) and a cleverly put together, very well thought out plot that convened perfectly. A tense and suspenseful read I didn't want to put down.

This was quite the interesting thriller from page 1 through the last! The suspense and mystery of it all built at a nice pace. It definitely was a page turner for me. I enjoyed all of the different characters (not that I liked them all, but they were very well written!) This was one of those books that had crazy twists and turns but wasn’t so extremely unbelievable you couldn’t get lost in the story. There were so many “oh wow” moments….right down to that very last page.

I really enjoyed reading this. I love books where all the characters have secrets and in this novel it was really fun to unwrap them all as they were revealed one by one.

I was with the main character in never knowing who to trust, I think I suspected just about every character at one point or another.

None of the characters were likeable, there was only one character I felt anything close to positive feelings for and as it turned out I was wrong about them!!

I would recommend this book as it was well paced and although I didn't like any of the characters, it was fun to learn their secrets.

Just an editing note, Sadie's surname changes from Harrison to Marsden during the book.

THE NEW WIFE
by my friend, SUE WATSON
Release date 11/19/2021

Sue, you are the queen of the crazy-ass mama’s!!! 🚁💁🏻‍♀️🚁👵🏼. I love it 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼

Georgie is a single mom with a son Sam who’s marrying his childhood sweetheart.
Helen and Tim are Lauren’s parents and they stand by just as proudly.
They’ve always wanted their kids to be married to one another and that day has finally come. 💍💒
But there’s so much tension pre-wedding you could cut it with a knife. Lauren is extroverted. Sam is introverted. Lauren is super spoiled. Sam is not.
Weeks after Sam and Lauren are married she is found dead at the bottom of her marble steps. Murdered. And Georgie has lots of suspicions. But Lauren is full of secrets that seem to have been destroying her on the inside.

This book is full of tension and I am here for it. Sadie the BFF is acting fine. And continuously drops bomb after bomb throughout the book. Laurens's younger sister is standoffish. As this mystery unfolds you will see what lies and secrets can do to not one but two separate families. My grandma always said, listen to what people say when they are angry. Because that’s when the truth comes out.

Closed Doors…
Who will ever know what goes on behind those closed doors? A tension building narrative, twists and turns aplenty and a credible cast of characters, but who is to be trusted in this edgy psychological suspense? Who is to be believed? The author paints some difficult themes, dealt well with sleight of hand. An engaging and compelling read.
