▪️Author: Sue Watson I Psychological Thriller
▪️Publisher: Bookouture @bookouture
▪️Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The plot was interesting enough, I just really hated Georgie.
Of all the characters in the book she seemed the least developed.
Imagine my surprise that she ended up being the narrator for the whole story.
I will probably give Sue Watson another try since she showed some spectacular ideas.
Thanks to NetGalley & Bookouture for my DRC.
Intense, atmospheric and twisty, The New Wife was certainly a gripping mystery thriller.
Synopsis –
Georgie, a single mother is elated that her son Sam is now marrying his childhood sweetheart Lauren. Especially given that Lauren’s parents - Tim and Helen are like her own family. But her happiness is short-lived when after three months, Lauren is found dead in their beautiful countryside home, which then leads to Sam being questioned by the police. As any mother would do, Georgie is determined to reveal the truth behind Lauren’s death and help Sam absolve himself from the charges.
Review -
The entire narrative is from Georgie’s POV – I found this to be a unique perspective and was handled well by the author. The eerie setting in the isolated cottage in the moorlands of Devon creates a sense of claustrophobia and evokes intrigue.
I loved how Watson explores the dynamics between the two families. As she reveals their relationship over the years, she paints the picture of their personalities describing how their bonding and friendship evolved.
Georgie’s desperate search for answers, leads her to discover a dark web of secrets and lies with everyone she thought she knew well. Navigating through this maze, she realizes her naivety of believing everything at face value. None of them could be trusted and the mystery deepened with every chapter’s ending.
Though there were a few questionable points about the plot and the setting, this was undeniably a compelling and fast paced read. The big reveal wasn’t a major jaw dropper as the ending almost pin pointed us in the right direction. However, that did not spoil the enjoyment and did leave me gasping at the turn of events.
Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for providing me with the ARC in exchange of an honest review!
Thanks to NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book. I loved this from page one. Good characters and well written. It was gripping and twisty right to the end. Touching on families, loyalty and secrets, it was a great read and I would highly recommend it!
"You Can Never Truly Know What Goes On Behind Closed Doors..." Sue Watson has another hit with The New Wife! A thoroughly entertaining and engaging psychological thriller!
Many thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for this ARC!
A great read from Sue Watson.
This book is packed full of secrets and it’s hard to know who is telling the truth.
Months after they’re married, Lauren is found dead by her husband in their home.
Sam is devastated and calls his Mum to ask for support. Lauren’s parents are also devastated by the loss of their daughter and are determined to find the killer.
The story has a few twists and turns until the killer is finally revealed.
A gripping psychological thriller.
Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.
The New Wife - Sue Watson
The first book I've read by this author.
I started reading it one evening, and after the first quarter was finding it rather slow so decided to keep it for a weekend to start again and read cover to cover to give it a fair chance.
Told from Georgia's perspective (the mother of the son whose wife dies), there is a lot of dialogue, which is a style I sometimes struggle to get involved with. There is depth to the plot and characters but I found it too slow and too long to really get excited about reading it, or to care much about the characters.
I've seen plenty of great reviews for this book, so it might just be me.
Thanks to Netgalley and Bookoutre
The New Wife was amazing. It had me hooked immediately. The twists and turns came thick and fast and just when I thought I knew what direction the story was going the author threw in another surprise which left me in shock. I could not put this one down.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for my ARC.
I don’t have an expression strong enough to describe how I felt when I was whacked over the head by the shocking twists in The New Wife! Sue Watson keeps outdoing herself! I have no idea what she’s going to do for her next book! I loved the character development and descriptions. I felt like I actually knew them for years! Of course I was pleased that our main character, Georgie, was in first person. I don’t think this is a spoiler because it’s quite general but I kept applying my theories to multiple characters and I truly thought that they fit until the shocking twists at the end! And then MORE twists! And if you think you can guess the twists, then you’re freaking WRONG! And I LOVE being wrong! It makes me do my thriller book happy dance! So buckle up and enjoy the ride because this was a quick read and you’ll plow right through it!
Another smasher from Sue Watson! Scratch the surface and things aren’t always as they seem in this book.
Lauren and Sam are childhood sweethearts, from the moment they first met in nursery at the tender age of 3 they had been inseparable. So, on the day they marry, both Laurens parents, Tim and Helen and Sam’s mum, Georgie, are elated, the Jacksons and the Moores are finally family. However just 3 months after the wedding Lauren, a budding junior doctor, is dead. Suddenly there seems to be secrets and lies everywhere and as these begin to come out Sam’s mother Georgie starts to wonder whether she really knew the Jacksons at all.
A brilliant book from Sue Watson all about how people perceived others and how a lot of the time you only see what they want you to see. Her writing draws you in and you just can’t stop reading. All the way through the book I was making assumptions over who did what and time after time I was wrong, I love it when I don’t work out twists and the final one at the very end of the book I definitely did not see coming. My overall thought of this book is wowsers you never really know what goes on behind closed doors.
This book was a pleasure to read, and I highly recommend it for fans of Sue Watson and for fans of psychological thrillers. You won’t be disappointed.
Thank you to NetGalley, Bookouture and Sue Watson for my advanced reading copy. Due out 19th November 2021.
I’d like to thank Bookouture and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read ‘The New Wife’ written by Sue Watson in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.
Three months after Georgie’s son Sam marries Lauren his childhood sweetheart, Lauren is found dead at the bottom of their marble staircase. Georgie knows Sam wouldn’t have hurt her but the police still arrest him. Georgie will do anything to get Sam’s name cleared even if it means digging into Lauren’s background and discovering the secrets her parents Helen and Tim are hiding.
‘The New Wife’ is a gripping and tense thriller with secrets, lies and family dynamics that’s kept me guessing, trying to work out who was involved, what happened to Lauren and why. There are plenty of twists and turns that kept me glued to my seat, attempting to guess who’s responsible but failing spectacularly, so when I reached the conclusion I was amazed that I hadn’t worked it out. This is a good read that I’ve thoroughly enjoyed and I can recommend it.
The New Wife tells the story of Georgie who's son is a newlywed, a few months after his marriage his wife is found dead seemingly after falling down the stairs. In the aftermath of the death, Georgie starts to learn things about the people she thought that she knew. The perfect couple that were her best friends and Lauren's parents aren't everything that they seemed to be and everyone seems to have secrets.
I enjoyed this thrilling read that had plenty of twists and turns. It's told from the point of view of Georgie as she finds out the truth behind her son's marriage and the friendship that she has had for the last twenty or so years. I enjoyed the read, but I did find Georgie to be incredibly naive. She really doesn't seem to question anything, even after it becomes clear that Lauren's death was not an accident. I know that it might be hard for someone to accept that nothing is what they thought it was, but she does just accept everything she is told without question. Her relationship with Lauren's parents is also very weird, but each to their own I suppose.
This was a really good read that kept me turning the pages to see if I'd figured it all right or not. There was plenty going on.
I received a complimentary copy of this book through NetGalley. The opinions expressed in this review are completely my own and given voluntarily.
You can never truly know what goes on behind closed doors…
Sam Moore and Lauren Jackson have been best friends since their first day at school when they were three and Sam told Lauren to shut up because she was crying so loudly! Twenty three years later and these childhood sweethearts are getting married and the two families are joining as one, as Lauren's mum and dad, Helen and Tim like to call them, the 'Jackmoores'. Now they're about to start married life in their dream cottage situated on the moors of Dartmoor and they couldn't be happier, but just a few short weeks later Sam's mum, Georgie answers the phone to her son, to be told that Lauren is dead and what first appeared to be an accident turns into a murder investigation, Sam is being questioned and Georgie is certain he isn't responsible, she just needs to find evidence to prove it before it tears the two families apart completely.
The New Wife is told from Georgie's perspective, it started as a slow burner but soon picked up speed, drawing me in right from the start. It's a tale of families, relationships, secrets and lies and shows that you can't ever really know someone as well as you thought, including family. This becomes quite evident to Georgie when she starts digging around trying to get answers to the mystery surrounding Lauren's death, because the secrets she uncovers will send shockwaves through the families and have a detrimental effect on their lives. This is a thriller with so many twists and turns that I changed my mind quite often as to who the perpetrator was, but nothing prepared me for the final reveal, although reflecting on it now and the behaviour of that person, should have made it obvious really. This is another great read and I look forward to reading more by this author.
I'd like to thank Bookouture and Netgalley for the auto approval, I will post my review on Goodreads now and Amazon on publication day.
THE NEW WIFE - SUE WATSON
PLOT - Georgie is truly happy when her son Sam marries his childhood sweetheart and Lauren is like the daughter she didn't hv. But weeks later Lauren is dead and the police arrest Sam. But Georgie knows her son cannot do it yet Sam is hiding something!! She tries to find the answers herself only to find Lauren was also hiding some dangerous secret!!
Can Georgie find out the true killer?? Or is her life on danger too??
MY THOUGHTS-
It's a slow burn mystery thriller takes a while to get to the main crux of the story and one can loose a bit of interest in the middle
All the secrets are out gradually some I could but the final twists which are revealed were quite shocking and all loopholes and clues are tied up well in the end.
"You can never truly know what goes on behind closed doors"
This has been depicted quite well in the book!!
Thank you Netgalley and the publishers for this arc in exchange for my honest review.
It took me a week to finish the audiobook and I’d like to praise the voice narrator. She was so good! Her voice interpreted the emotions in every dialogue perfectly and I just love her.
The premise was intriguing and the characters were suspicious. I was accusing everyone, trying to make the puzzle pieces fit together. The build-up was a little bit slow but when the unexpected truth was revealed, everything made sense and the twists kept coming.
Also, the ending was shocking! Just when I thought this book couldn’t surprise me any further— it did and it was so good.
If you think you know someone, having spent decades with them, think again. This book will make you question everything you know about people.
Thank you again to Bookouture and Netgalley for the ARC! 👍🏻
WOW! Please tell me there is a sequel!! This novel was definitely a roller coaster ride of emotions and twists. I thought I knew who killed Lauren, but then I kept switching the blame to the next character and so on. It was a lot of fun, even though morbid to say that way.
Sue Watson has a wonderful writing style that makes it a super fast read, but not taking away from any details related to the story or the characters themselves. I felt a personal connection to each one, while simultaneously hating them and wishing they'd be caught.
Give this book a try and see if it becomes your new favorite. It was definitely a close second for me! Thank you Netgalley and Susan Watson for choosing me to have an advanced reader copy in exchange for a honest review. I loved it and will be purchasing it when it becomes available to add to my collection!
Sam marries his childhood sweetheart Lauren but within weeks she is dead.
This has so many twists and turns. I thought I had it all figured out but how wrong I was.
Both families have so many secrets. The Jacksons seem like the perfect family but who really knows what goes on behind closed doors. The writing was superb, it certainly had me riveted waiting for the next revelation
The cottage on the moors sounds so creepy. Isolated and close to the prison, I certainly wouldn't want to live there.
I have only read one of Sue's books before and I really enjoyed that one too. I will definitely be looking for more of hers.
Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for the ARC in return for an honest review.
So the only book I have read of Sue Watson is First Date so I decided to try out her new book, The New Wife.
Plot:- Sam and Lauren were childhood friends and later husband and wife that even their families had been inseparable to each other. But one day, Georgie, Sam's mother receives a frantic call from her son, saying that Lauren is dead. What seemed to look like an accident now rules out as murder and Sam was arrested. Now Georgie would do anything to prove that her son is innocent. Meanwhile, she finds Helen and Tim, Lauren's parents' marriage has secrets...
Writing:- The first past of the story was a bit boring. However, soon by the middle of the book, it got interesting and intriguing with some dark secrets that seems to be revealing and of course some twists and turns along the way. The story is mainly told from Georgie's perspective and with so many suspects, Georgie has a hard time, trying to prove her son is innocent. The ending was kind of unexpected.
Characters:-I believe except for Georgie, other characters are quite unlikable to me.
Overall:- this was actually a good thriller, that will keep you on the edge of the seat! Worth four stars
Thank you Netgalley and Bookouture for the ARC. The review is based on my honest opinion only
If you’ve been following me, you know how much I LOVE Bookouture releases. “The New Wife” is no exception.
While this book is billed as a psychological thriller, it has a mystery element to it. As Georgie (Sam’s mother) asks questions about the tragedy and tries to protect her son, there are clues uncovered and this gives the story a whodunit vibe.
The story is filled with twists and turns and you’ll think you’ll have it figured out, but you’re wrong! Every character is a suspect and not to be trusted.
Sue Watson’s writing is solid and it kept me engrossed in the story until the final page.
Thanks to NetGalley, Bookouture and Sue Watson for the opportunity to review this ARC. This review and all opinions are my own.
Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review. Wow! Riveting read does not even begin to give this book justice. There are so many twists and turns in this book you will have whiplash! The newlyweds are seemingly happy. When Lauren ends up dead, it appears to be an accident. However, upon further investigation it is determined that someone else was present on that fateful night. As always the first suspect is her husband. His mother, Georgie, is the storyteller. She staunchly defends her son when he is suspected of murdering his wife. She never believes for one second that her son is capable of murder. I would assume I had the right murder suspect, and then it would take another twist and turn! This is a great mystery and great psychological thriller. The plot of this book will leave you dumbfounded from the first page!
