A unique way to learn a bit about Zambian life and culture and to experience YA fantasy from a different perspective. American and English readers will immediately see some parallels with Harry Potter (the development of teens’ magical skills within “an academy”), but Night Flyers has more of a science fiction component and is more elevated in both language and complexity. It seems to be the beginning of a series, as I can certainly see Keti and Kassanda being sent on more missions in books to come.
The alternating of the background and the main storyline chapters is not effective at all, and the additional moving back and forth between Keti and Kassanda makes for a very disjointed read. There is plenty of potential if these structural elements are remedied. I would be willing to take a look at a sequel.
Thank you to Jane K. Silwizya, BookLocker, and NetGalley for an Advance Reader Copy in exchange for an honest review.
