I must admit that I didn't finish this book. After getting about 20% in I was thoroughly confused, had no idea what he was talking about and figured I wasn't the target market, even though I have run a small business for the past five years and been freelance for 20.
He started by saying this book was for business owners, employees and students which just seemed like too broad a base, and at no point does he define what a small business is.
The book seemed to be aimed at medium to large businesses with shareholders and a legal requirement to publish their accounts rather than a genuine sole trader or small business which isn't Limited.
I also struggled with the language, as it gives the impression of not being written by a native speaker so there are some oddities like; a clarity on, an accountant with a suitcase (instead of briefcase) and how it would be explained in simple languages.
Add to that convoluted and meandering examples and explanations, I ended up more confused than when I started and I have been doing my own accounts for years.
Ok, I picked this one up and thought, "If a financial idiot like myself can understand this, it's one I want on my shelf." And then, "Why didn't I have this when I worked for myself and had no idea how to keep my books straight?"
If you're intimidated by the paperwork to run a small business, you need this book. If you've been confused by online ledgers and bookkeeping, you'll want to read it thoroughly. And, if you've ever run across accounting terms and wondered about this new language, you'll appreciate the glossary of definitions.
Recommended for all small business owners, the sooner the better.
Thank you to Netgalley for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
An easy to understand guide to small business accounting. Now to put it into practice.
A very useful guide. It introduced me to some terms I didn’t know, even if the concepts were familiar. I enjoyed the short sections and the little illustrations. I just hope the same terms are used in the UK as I only later realised (when I reached the first dollar sign) that this book is American!
Short, sweet, and super helpful. I came in not knowing anything but feel a lot more confident. There are a few things the author could have done a deeper dive on but at least now I'm armed with the vocabulary to look up more about it.
Great insight and extremely useful. I’m studying for my accountancy qualification and this has really helped.
Thank you
Love this book because it's made accounting easy for someone like me who is not a professional.
The concepts are well defined and you get to know what to look for when it comes to proper handling, of your finances.
Thanks Netgalley for the eARC.
Great resource for those wanting a guide which isn't as complex as college accounting class. Perfect for work from home era and getting started on your own business.
Honestly? A pretty good insight into this subject. I’m not one to pick up these kind of books but a little education never hurt anyone and I honestly really do love and appreciate these type of books and topics it’s fun and interesting. So this is 5 out of 5 stars. Maybe now I can finally start reading books about this particular subject!
